Hello, Mumsnetters. I'm on the lookout for a very chocolately, rich, and indulgent hot chocolate mix.

The Cadbury one in the purple tin just isn't satisfying my craving (pregnant, maybe that's why), and although I do enjoy making it from a bar of chocolate, that feels like lots more calories than a mix would be.

So, give me your recommendations for a really special treat, please :)

Hot chocolate is disgusting and you're all weird.

However, my DM is another hot chocolate loving weirdo and swears by Hotel Chocolat.

Green and blacks with hot milk.

Or Morrisons do white chocolate milk in their refrigerator section - use that instead of ordinary milk, it tastes more like ice cream in the end.

I have a Hotel chocolat velvetiser which heats up milk as it stirs it, which came with some flakey chocolate mixes - there's not that much difference with the taste of G&B but the stirring makes it more viscous as everything is stirred in and there's no sludge at the end.

I'm with you mostdays I love chocolate in solid, but not in liquid form - so hot chocolate has no appeal (also chocolate mousse, ice cream, etc)

skyesayshi · 14/11/2018 17:30

I love Aero hot chocolate, it is very chocolately and frothy and you just reminded me to add some to my shop!

brizzledrizzle · 14/11/2018 17:31

Amazon sell a hot chocolate with marzipan.

Jenasaurus · 14/11/2018 17:33

crumble a twirl in it and that will intensify the hot chocolate taste :)

carpetbug · 14/11/2018 17:33

Make it with squares of dark chocolate. Heat a mugful of milk in a saucepan, when it starts to warm, whisk in about 4 squares of chocolate - you can add more if it's not chocolatey enough & sugar if you want. I like it with a tiny bit of chilli - not so that it burns, just to make it more warming. You can also add cinnamon, ginger, whatever you want. It's way nicer and more luxurious than powdered chocolate drink.

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 14/11/2018 17:34

You need one that doesn't contain palm oil for a start.
Or lots of sugar or sweeteners.

You could try carob and add sugar if you like it sweet but not over processed and full of crap.

MarxandMarzipan · 14/11/2018 17:37

either put a little bit of coffee in it. It increases the chocolate flavour.
OR do yourself a real favour and get some dark chocolate swiss hot chocolate called Caotina. It's just the best.

Twuntsrule · 14/11/2018 17:37

I like the Cadbury's Drinking Chocolate made with chocolate milk idea. And for those of you who are not preggo, add a shot or two of Bailey's or peppermint schnapps for an adult version that's delicious!

CheeseTheDay · 14/11/2018 17:40

I use Jaz and Julz - at the moment I've got the 1kg bag of the gingerbread one.

Out of the unflavoured ones, the Colombia one is my favourite.

Aldi make a nice instant hot chocolate. Take a mug, put 4 heaped teaspoons in first, fill up to about 3/4 with hot - not boiling water and top up with milk. Lovely.

merrymouse · 14/11/2018 17:42

Green and Blacks.

Arthien · 14/11/2018 17:43

Whittards all the way for me. I stock up when it's on 3 for £12.

Nanasueathome · 14/11/2018 17:46

Have a look at the Velvetiser from Hotel Chocolat
Not sure if it’s avaikabke yet but it looks good

squishee · 14/11/2018 17:47

Mix the following into a smooth paste:
A splash of warm water, 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 tbsp of sweetened condensed milk.
Top up your mug with warm milk.
Add a pinch of salt.
Whisky optional.
It's so much better than anything else I've found.

Momzilla82 · 14/11/2018 17:48

Another vote for Rococo. I always buy myself some for Christmas

cansu · 14/11/2018 17:48

Hotel chocolat one is really delicious.

ReflectionsofParadise · 14/11/2018 17:53

Buy decent chocolate. Grate it. Make hot milk. Add chocolate. Stir.

End. Of.

Bigonesmallone3 · 14/11/2018 17:55

This is a long shot and I don't know if u can buy it online but the Harrods one 🤤

ReflectionsofParadise · 14/11/2018 17:56

Oh and add a teaspoon or 2 of Horlicks for a Hot chocolate Malt 😍

Firstbornunicorn · 14/11/2018 18:02

Some great suggestions! I particularly like the idea of making it with chocolate milk.

Forgot to mention (a PP reminded me) we don't use Nestlé products and are trying to avoid palm oil. But I think most of these suggestions would be ok. I might buy a selection from the supermarket and ask for 1 or 2 of the fancier ones from Santa!

Green and blacks every time
