Hello, Mumsnetters. I'm on the lookout for a very chocolately, rich, and indulgent hot chocolate mix.

The Cadbury one in the purple tin just isn't satisfying my craving (pregnant, maybe that's why), and although I do enjoy making it from a bar of chocolate, that feels like lots more calories than a mix would be.

So, give me your recommendations for a really special treat, please :)

Dd had a costa hot chocolate with praline at the weekend and said it was the nicest one ever.

Ollivander84 · 15/11/2018 20:46

I had the Starbucks Christmas hot chocolate (salted caramel brownie hot chocolate) and that was really nice

Cuddlykitten123 · 15/11/2018 20:51

Twinning is my first choice. Galaxy frothy as a back up.

OliviaBenson · 15/11/2018 20:57

Whittards! They always have some to try. Currently enjoying their orange choc one. Yum!

Rarfy · 15/11/2018 21:20

@TheChickenOfTruth well thats kind of my theory out of the window then.

Gaviscon double action medicine seems to stop the heartburn straight away for me.

Give it a try even if you just manage the cream off the top.

Teagoanngoanngoann · 15/11/2018 21:34

Melt your fav choc add to hot milk and add a tbsp of corn flour. Whisk until creamy. Mmmmm

MrsPob · 15/11/2018 21:36

Twinings Swiss is delicious

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 15/11/2018 21:41

Galaxy 3heaped teaspoons with 1.5 teaspoons of Cadburys.
I use water just because i dont like milk. Tastes amazing. Although not as good as the Hazelnut and Praline hot choc at Costa mmmmmmmmm

Onehellofaride · 15/11/2018 21:45

I made Jamie Oliver’s epic hot choc this evening for DC and it really was epic! Brew

Kintan · 15/11/2018 22:05

I was disappointed with the Hotel Chocolat gingerbread one - doesn't taste chocolatey at all more like a kind of milky chai.

flugelhorn81 · 15/11/2018 22:28

I'm a sucker for the Paul hot chocolate, it's really rich. I think you can buy it in cartons at Paul shops.

Loyaultemelie · 15/11/2018 22:44

Whittards! I accidentally bought their Rocky Road (instead of ordinary) and it's gorgeous. I make mine with oat milk and my dds with ordinary. Dd2 was practically doing doughnuts

SqueeksAway · 15/11/2018 22:48

The absolute best is Miles add a bit of milk whisk it up and add the water!
I think it might be a south west brand but I get it from Tesco so maybe it’s everyw

If you are ever in the US Ghiradelli's hot cocoa mixes are food of the gods.

Ghirardelli's hot cocoa mixes

I'm partial to the mocha, but they're all fabulous.

Twotabbycats · 15/11/2018 23:20

I love the French one called Poulin. Very creamy, very chocolatey and very cheap! Not much help though unless you are planning a trip. I sometimes add the tip of a teaspoon of cocoa to make it slightly richer.

I also like Whittards and always used to buy in the U.K. and bring it back - now I take Poulin to the U.K.!

CatsMother66 · 15/11/2018 23:32

I recommend you Google The Tea Emporium in Bath and look up their hot chocolate. Nicest I’ve tried.

Triskaidekaphilia · 15/11/2018 23:42

Twotabbycats For some reason I was drawn to look up Poulain and realised it's the hot chocolate my grandad used to make me (he visited france a lot) I remember the tub! That would have been a forever lost memory if I hadn't just looked it up!

OrigamiZoo · 16/11/2018 00:04

Cocoa for me, with full fat milk, with very little sugar.

I never order hot chocolate out as it is always too sweet. You would never get coffee or tea pre-sweetened so we do we get hot chocolate? Drives me wild!

OrigamiZoo · 16/11/2018 00:07

@Cineraria Do you really mean tablespoons? Shock at the sugar

Chucknology · 16/11/2018 01:15

Green & Blacks.

mathanxiety · 16/11/2018 03:00

YYY to Ibarra hot choc (Mexican). Abuelita is also a great mix (Mexican too). It has a picture of abuelita herself sipping hot choc, on the package. It's made by Nestle though.

You could make your own Mexican style hot choc with plain choc, sugar, full fat milk and a cinnamon stick stirred in it for a few minutes.

Cineraria · 16/11/2018 08:27

@organizing yes tablespoons, the measuring scoop kind. He does have a sweet tooth and tends to have his hot chocolate as a snack when he'd otherwise maybe have a bar of chocolate or piece of cake rather than as a drink but in this occasion fancies something hot, so I guess it's more comparable with the sugar content of those.

onthenaughtystepagain · 16/11/2018 11:46

Green and Blacks for every day. Charbonnel for special treat.

onthenaughtystepagain · 16/11/2018 11:49

If you are ever in the US Ghiradelli's hot cocoa mixes are food of the gods.

I can never understand the American obsession with Ghiradelli chocolate, we queued for ages in SF for a sundae and were so disappointed, very low cocoa content and dreadfully sweet. It's on a par with Cadbury's.
