Hello, Mumsnetters. I'm on the lookout for a very chocolately, rich, and indulgent hot chocolate mix.

The Cadbury one in the purple tin just isn't satisfying my craving (pregnant, maybe that's why), and although I do enjoy making it from a bar of chocolate, that feels like lots more calories than a mix would be.

So, give me your recommendations for a really special treat, please :)

@Flowerfae I've heard theirs is fab but Aldi isn't in NI yet!

@VisitorsEntrance I wonder why mine does... I'll admit it's probably user error.

Really. I’ve been buying it for years and never had that happen.

@VisitorsEntrance I actually don't rate it! Especially as it solidifies in the package 😂

Heating milk is a ball ache so we have instant.
Clipper Fair Trade is the best instant.

I discovered Nesquick chocolate milkshake powder swirled into frothed milk makes the best hot chocolate. Not sure why, it's not even a hot chocolate.
You need two tablespoons. It's really good.

Sloanes of London sold in Tesco was the best! Now discontinues- was lumps of choc that you melted in hot milk, delicious 😋

Otherwise Twinings Swiss is the best alternative but not a touch on the above Sad

I recently made chocolate syrup for dcs to have on pancakes, which was a boiled mixture of cocoa powder, sugar, fresh vanilla seeds and water. It was a lot nicer than expected (!) and incidentally made lovely hot chocolate when stirred into creamy milk, without any powdery aftertaste. Squirty cream and marshmallows, maybe sprinkle of grated choc and some edible glitter loved by dcs.
My late dad, brought up in wartime when fresh milk was scarce, always continued to use cocoa powder, large spoon of sweetened condensed milk from a tin (now in tubes!) and hot water from the kettle. Delicious. Great for camping too.
I quite like a milky Cadbury’s drinking chocolate for nostalgia, but Horlicks or Ovaltine even better.

So you were disappointed in the cocoa content of your sundae? Was it the ice cream or the sauce they put on it?

The bittersweet baking chips I buy are 60% cocoa and the bars can be had from 60% to 86% cocoa. Those of course are not sweet in the slightest.

Ghiradelli Chocolate Bars

If you are ever in the US Ghiradelli's hot cocoa mixes are food of the gods.

I can never understand the American obsession with Ghiradelli chocolate, we queued for ages in SF for a sundae and were so disappointed, very low cocoa content and dreadfully sweet. It's on a par with Cadbury's.

Green and Blacks for every day. Charbonnel for special treat.

@organizing yes tablespoons, the measuring scoop kind. He does have a sweet tooth and tends to have his hot chocolate as a snack when he'd otherwise maybe have a bar of chocolate or piece of cake rather than as a drink but in this occasion fancies something hot, so I guess it's more comparable with the sugar content of those.

YYY to Ibarra hot choc (Mexican). Abuelita is also a great mix (Mexican too). It has a picture of abuelita herself sipping hot choc, on the package. It's made by Nestle though.

You could make your own Mexican style hot choc with plain choc, sugar, full fat milk and a cinnamon stick stirred in it for a few minutes.

@Cineraria Do you really mean tablespoons? Shock at the sugar

Cocoa for me, with full fat milk, with very little sugar.

I never order hot chocolate out as it is always too sweet. You would never get coffee or tea pre-sweetened so we do we get hot chocolate? Drives me wild!

Twotabbycats For some reason I was drawn to look up Poulain and realised it's the hot chocolate my grandad used to make me (he visited france a lot) I remember the tub! That would have been a forever lost memory if I hadn't just looked it up!

I recommend you Google The Tea Emporium in Bath and look up their hot chocolate. Nicest I’ve tried.

I love the French one called Poulin. Very creamy, very chocolatey and very cheap! Not much help though unless you are planning a trip. I sometimes add the tip of a teaspoon of cocoa to make it slightly richer.

I also like Whittards and always used to buy in the U.K. and bring it back - now I take Poulin to the U.K.!

Ghirardelli's hot cocoa mixes

I'm partial to the mocha, but they're all fabulous.

Whittards! I accidentally bought their Rocky Road (instead of ordinary) and it's gorgeous. I make mine with oat milk and my dds with ordinary. Dd2 was practically doing doughnuts

I'm a sucker for the Paul hot chocolate, it's really rich. I think you can buy it in cartons at Paul shops.
