To think that no employer is sticking a chip in me

Is it just me or is this totally bizarre? The huge company considering this in the UK is reportedly Amazon.

I’ve seen a documentary about people who voluntarily had chips in their hands to open doors, pay for things, ID etc. It was in Scandinavia. Bloody terrified me - someone wants to steal all your money/stuff? Chop off your arm and it’s theirs.

Totally fucked up idea. Scary.

nornironrock · 12/11/2018 09:41

I'm currently investigating getting a chip. I want to use it for contactless payment, and for getting into the gym.

I think they're pretty awesome.

Wouldn't have one for work though....

Quipsandquotes · 12/11/2018 09:41

Horrible idea. I have no doubt this will also end up being used to keep track on employees' movements.

Scary stuff.

Johnnycomelately1 · 12/11/2018 09:41

Bloody terrified me - someone wants to steal all your money/stuff? Chop off your arm and it’s theirs. probably not as chip can probably tell if it’s still attached to the rightful owner.

Johnnycomelately1 · 12/11/2018 09:44

Although I was thinking about this the other day and whether people would accept being chipped to basically eradicate violent crime as it would be 100% obvious who’d done it.

brizzledrizzle · 12/11/2018 09:47

There's no way on this earth I'd go and work for a company that insisted I was microchipped. I'm a person not a pet dog/cat.

Bimblefaff · 12/11/2018 09:50

I'm up for this! It will stop voting fraud, benefits fraud, cheating on tests and exams, keeping track of people who need tracking etc.
It's quite exciting to me!

Willow1992 · 12/11/2018 09:52

Sounds like a plot idea for Black Mirror!

KarrisWhiteOak · 12/11/2018 09:54

Sounds very scary. Big brother is watching.
But people will come along and say if you’ve done nothing wrong no reason to fear stuff like this.

IStandWithPosie · 12/11/2018 09:56

And how long before the chip database is hacked? Information stolen, used for fraud, deleted or manipulated to cover up crimes?

lljkk · 12/11/2018 09:59

How could the hacked database be used for fraud, doesn't one need 'the chip' to access anything & everything?

I'm excluding joint action of arm chopping in that question.

SlothMama · 12/11/2018 10:06

I wouldn't be getting one full stop.

cricketmum84 · 12/11/2018 10:07

It's a nope from me!

It reminds me of a plot from a futuristic thriller!

nornironrock · 12/11/2018 10:08

You're all vastly overestimating the amount of data that a workplace chip would need to contain in order to be useful for access, and for timekeeping. For access, it simply needs a code that is read by the door/gate sensor, and for time keeping an identifier that is then registered and placed on a recording document of database. The code recorded can then be matched to the employee records for timekeeping. In exactly the same way that a card entry system would do it currently.

This is simply new tech. People are always unduly frightened by new tech.

InfiniteVariety · 12/11/2018 10:09

It's like my cat who has one to get through his catflap Grin

MyBrexitIsIll · 12/11/2018 10:10

bimblefaf and it will be the end of any civil liberties. Great.

Im really not sure why we should be chipped like a dog when we could just get ID card for most of the things you mention.
I mean it seems to work well in most other countries despite creating an outcry here....

UpstartCrow · 12/11/2018 10:12

Its not unreasonable to protest the new tech being implanted in your body. This is a huge step over an existing boundary, which is where my human rights start.

The current social unrest and uncertainty is being driven to pave the way for biometrics.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 12/11/2018 10:12

I used to work in a place that had 'swipe' cards that did similar. People could see who was in which building by looking them up on a database and seeing where and when their card was last used. It was our clock in/clock out card, our access card and our car park pass. Failure to bring the card to work was a disciplinary offence.

MyBrexitIsIll · 12/11/2018 10:12

People are always unduly frightened by new tech.
Are they now? I suppose this why we have so many very strict checks to do with human reproduction (aka IVF) to ensure the new technology is ethical then?

Any new technology needs to be checked before used imo. On ethical grounds. And on long term safety grounds (I’m talking freedom of speech, risk of propaganda, civil liberties etc etc)

needsahouseboy · 12/11/2018 10:12

I think this could be a good thing. I'm all for Big Brother type stuff when it can be used to protect people, find criminals etc.

itsnowthewaitinggame · 12/11/2018 10:13

Does anyone remember when iPhones first had the thumb print recognition and the horror tales about thieves potentially cutting off thumb/ hands in order to steal and gain access to the phones. The stories terrified me so much I avoided the finger print recognition for ages. Then the stories died down and I haven't heard them since ( Ive got thumb recognition now!)
Technology is so continuously changing and things in our future would horrify us today

brizzledrizzle · 12/11/2018 10:14

A card for a card entry system can be left at home, a microchip can't. Given that chips can be updated remotely how do you know that your employer hasn't changed the data on it?

IStandWithPosie · 12/11/2018 10:15

How could the hacked database be used for fraud, doesn't one need 'the chip' to access anything & everything?

Hack database assign existing IDs to new chips (there has to be a protocol for replacing genuine malfunctioning chips - install new chip) don’t install chips in anyone, sell them to unscrupulous people.

missmouse101 · 12/11/2018 10:15

The only chip an employer would be welcome to stick in me, would be a cheesy one into my gob.

Sparklesocks · 12/11/2018 10:15

I would be concerned it could be exploited. I don’t mind things like thumb print or face recognition, but having a chip from my work place would make me feel a bit like their pet.
