To cringe at my FB friend for posting pictures of her cats wearing poppies?

With the hashtag "lest we forget" 🙄

To me, it's just trivialising the monumental sacrifices made during WW1, and using it as just an opportunity to post more pictures of her "fur babies" (cringe!!)

I kind of want to post a comment, but know I will look like a snarky cow!!

Maybe get a hobby and leave her be.

MirandaGoshawk · 11/11/2018 17:18

YANBU. Totally cringeworthy. But harmless. Personally, I wouldn't comment.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 11/11/2018 17:19

I have 2 lovely cats if i tried to put a poppy on either of them i might well lose a finger Grin

Gardai · 11/11/2018 17:20

Part of me was hoping you’d post pics.
I’ll get my coat

WWWWicked · 11/11/2018 17:20

My friend posted her pet wearing a poppy with “Lest we never forget”.

I’m sitting on my hands to stop myself from commenting on both counts.

Tashalburrows · 11/11/2018 17:20

Our horses have wore there purple poppies today, but that was to remember the thousands of horses that went to war as well. Don't remember any cats going lol x

PrincessTwilightStoleMyToddler · 11/11/2018 17:22

@Pixiemeat we may share a Facebook friend. That or there’s more than one of them...

If we do have a mutual friend she is a lovely sweet person but totally obsessed with those (baby substitute) cats and it is absolutely not worth saying anything. She is a bit tone deaf about anything to do with those animals, and while I agree it is inappropriate she will have meant well and if you tell her everyone thinks she is batshit she’ll cry.

Pixiemeat · 11/11/2018 17:23

I can't post pics in case she's on here!

I will just judge and cringe in silence 😂

I’m trying to work out what cats would be good for in a war.
That said, walk away from Facebook, it’s spawn of the devil.

harrypotterfan1604 · 11/11/2018 17:25

I posted a picture a few days ago of my dog wearing a poppy on her collar but mainly because her name is poppy and I thought poppy wearing her own poppy was cute 😂
I really don’t care if nobody gives a shit they can always just scroll past my post and ignore it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Gardai · 11/11/2018 17:25

I’d kill to see the pics tho op and judge like fuck !

catlovingdoctor · 11/11/2018 17:25

Maybe she found it a bit awkward to post in another way? Maybe she didn’t want to just share another generic picture of a poppy field, or a selfie of her wearing one. I think it’s still a valid way of remembering our fallen.

HRTpatch · 11/11/2018 17:26

I have seen one with a python.

Anasnake · 11/11/2018 17:26

Some troops did keep cats, was a way of trying to keeping the rat population down. There's also the famous tail of Simon the ship's cat who won a medal.

yearofthehorse · 11/11/2018 17:27

Can't vouch for this but heard that thousands of cats were shipped out to keep down the rats in the trenches.

Pixiemeat · 11/11/2018 17:28

Oh, they're on instagram too!

WWWWicked - good luck with that!

Princess - my friend is lovely too. Could well be the same one. One ginger cat and one black cat?

I wondered with all the bombing in cities if cats came into their own with the increase in rats.
Good kitties

SilentIsla · 11/11/2018 17:28

Hilarious. Some people are soooooo weird.

Villanellesproudmum · 11/11/2018 17:28

Are they the poppies pets at home we’re selling?

Villanellesproudmum · 11/11/2018 17:29

Were

Theyprobablywill · 11/11/2018 17:29

Catching rats on Royal Navy ships.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 11/11/2018 17:30

But when we went past a RBL stand a few weeks back they were selling poppy covered dog collars and we bought one for the dickhead spaniel. Is it entirely wrong to support an important charity like RBL via your pets?

If she loves her pets too much, that's ok. It doesn't devalue the importance of the poppy or Armistice Day to shove a poppy on a cat any more than sticking one to the front of your car does.

cricketmum84 · 11/11/2018 17:31

Actually I don't think it's cringeworthy at all.

I have lots of friends who work in the veterinary profession and have seen lots of "lest we forget" posts with pics of their animals wearing purple poppies and about the sacrifices animals made during both world wars! Cats hunting rats and mice in the trenches, dogs, horses... who's to say that's not the point your friend was trying to make?

Gardai · 11/11/2018 17:32

I think it’s more the seriousness of the symbolism of the poppy is somewhat watered down to a level whereby it’s a mere accessory that is weird ?
But you never know what goes on in people’s heads...

EverybodyLovesRaymond · 11/11/2018 17:32

Seen a few of these, thought they were quite nice.
