To cringe at my FB friend for posting pictures of her cats wearing poppies?

With the hashtag "lest we forget" 🙄

To me, it's just trivialising the monumental sacrifices made during WW1, and using it as just an opportunity to post more pictures of her "fur babies" (cringe!!)

I kind of want to post a comment, but know I will look like a snarky cow!!

What Gardai said

I've read/seen some very sombre and thought provoking articles today, and these cats popped up in the middle wearing their poppies and slightly resentful expressions.

It's not that my friend means any disrespect. She just doesn't really think too much about these things

Yabu. Maybe her cats have spent the day in solemn remembrance of the brave young cats who gave their tomorrow so we could have our today.

Ladygodivasroom · 11/11/2018 17:45

I suggest you educate yourself, OP. Maybe read the searing autobiography by Tiddles Jr IV: Hitler, my part in his downfall. Available on Amazon for two tins of Whiskas and a subscription to The Lovely Brave Cats website.

Ah - sounds like there’s more than one lovely cat lady OP. My friend has a black cat and a ridiculously fluffy tabby.

Very interesting to see the range of posts on here - I never really thought about animal casualties - food for thought.

blackchina · 11/11/2018 17:54

FGS leave her be. She's doing no harm. And YABU to not post the pics here!

RitaMills · 11/11/2018 18:02

Not too sure what’s so hilarious? Pets at home are selling them and all profits go to Royal British Legion. Animals were forced into wars and thousands died, nothing silly about sparing a little thought for them today as well.

Artofhappiness · 11/11/2018 18:04

YABU. Thousands of animals were used in battle and died at the front (including cats). Lots of first hand accounts of the comfort animals gave to injured and dying soldiers too. There is a reason regiments still have an animal mascot (usually a dog or Shetland pony).

Sneering at someone for remembering in their own way is far from what Remembrance Sunday is about.

Gardai · 11/11/2018 18:06

This isn’t about the war effort
This is about Facebook twattery and using a cat, (who normally don’t like wearing anything except their fur), pose with a poppy for some likes.

Artofhappiness · 11/11/2018 18:07

And to add - it’s you op who clearly “doesn’t think too much about these things”, not your friend.

Gardai · 11/11/2018 18:09

Ooh ! Not happy Artofhappiness ! Who’s being sneery now ?
I haven’t sneered in years, I just judge, much kinder on the wrinkles

Artofhappiness · 11/11/2018 18:10

Again, sneering at people for remembering in their own way (Facebook, Twitter, collar poppies on pets, whatever) is really the antithesis of Remembrance Sunday. This thread has made me feel really sad.

Maelstrop · 11/11/2018 18:11

I've seen lots of dogs and horses wearing poppies on my FB feed today. I think it's sweet to have them on animals, particularly species that helped the soldiers in any way during times of war.

LittleBookofCalm · 11/11/2018 18:12

Just commercialism

YoThePussy · 11/11/2018 18:14

I went for a walk earlier this week and nearly every dog I met had a poppy hanging from their collar. I thought it was lovely to see.

My cats would lay me open if I tried to attach a poppy to them. Unless it is edible and preferably Dreamies they are not interested.

JacquesHammer · 11/11/2018 18:14

Slightly preferable to the guy I noticed on a local FB group whose profile pic was a pie with a poppy stuck in.

cricketmum84 · 11/11/2018 18:14

How is it commercialism if you are buying a poppy and that money goes to the British Legion??? Have I missed something?

Artofhappiness · 11/11/2018 18:18

LittleBookofCalm - Doesn’t the money from the poppies sales go to the British Legion or Poppy Scotland who use it to help veterans, war injured, their families etc?

EverybodyLovesRaymond · 11/11/2018 18:20

Why don't you just delete/unfollow her if you don't want to see her cat pictures. I've posted a picture of my dog wearing reindeer antlers after a bottle of wine at Christmas (me not the dog).

Also, if the money for the poppies went to the charity then it's all good.

ourkidmolly · 11/11/2018 18:21

There were some great pics last year if all the ways the poor poppy has been bastardised into a nonsense by lunatics. Tucked into a suspender and bras in the window of an underwear shop, stuck in a pile of minced beef...I kid you not!

savagebaggagemaster · 11/11/2018 18:22

If the money goes the RBL, then why not?

CarolDanvers · 11/11/2018 18:23

My dog has worn s poppy all week. As have I, as have my children. You’re being sneery and unreasonable.
