To cringe at my FB friend for posting pictures of her cats wearing poppies?

With the hashtag "lest we forget" 🙄

To me, it's just trivialising the monumental sacrifices made during WW1, and using it as just an opportunity to post more pictures of her "fur babies" (cringe!!)

I kind of want to post a comment, but know I will look like a snarky cow!!

"lest we forget" posts with pics of their animals wearing purple poppies and about the sacrifices animals made during both world wars!

Animal Aid stopped selling poppies because of this bullshit. "The sacrifices animals made" suggests they had some sort of choice in the matter, rather than the truth which is that they were sacrificed.

Different war but in the seige of Leningrad in the 2nd world war, so many cats died, sadly many were eaten, that the city became over run with rats and as soon as they could they brought in more cats

For someone who connects with cats and lacks humans they love, thinking of losing their cat in this way may be meaningful.

Some people like to make a massive deal about how they’re being so much more respectful than others by decorating themselves, their cars, their pets and their social media with poppies. They tend to be the same people who use the death of acquaintances to attract attention on Facebook. Leave them to it.

Pixiemeat · 11/11/2018 18:30

i haven't actually laid into my friend. I've just cringed and judged a bit. I do find it a bit insincere. A bit tasteless.

Have you read any of the replies Pixiemeat? Don’t you think your thread is ‘tasteless’?

Ladygodivasroom · 11/11/2018 18:43

EXTRACT: Some people may think, given that I am a cat, I did not understand the nature of the role I performed and that I was merely an animal who happened to be present at a time when humans were having a war. However I took, and continue to take, a keen interest in current affairs and as such I claim full responsibility for the actions I carried out FOR KING AND COUNTRY.

yabu.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 11/11/2018 18:44

Dickhead dog has had a poppy on his collar for a couple of weeks. I like it.

Artofhappiness · 11/11/2018 18:45

Why don’t you send your suggestions for tasteful ways to wear poppies or even perhaps even an etiquette guide to ‘appropriate poppy wearing and social media use’ to the British Legion? I’m sure they would appreciate your contribution.

Ladygodivasroom · 11/11/2018 18:47

Good idea. They could incorporate them into their guide as to pizza remembrance.

Rudgie47 · 11/11/2018 18:47

YABU OP, loads of cats have helped the war effort, in the trenches and on ships etc, to keep rodents down.
Maybe she is recognising and remembering their contribution. Don't be mean OP.

Pixiemeat · 11/11/2018 18:48

Artofhappiness I'm on it! 😂

isseywithcats · 11/11/2018 18:51

not well known but around five thousand cats were sent to war some on ships to keep down rodents some to the trenches to detect mustard gas (not a nice death) and to keep the troops company so why not include cats in todays rememberance , many horses died and also dogs who were used to detect mines and mustard gas

Artofhappiness · 11/11/2018 18:53

Ah, pixiemeat and ladygodivasroom appear to be the same poster. Waste of time.

EverybodyLovesRaymond · 11/11/2018 18:54

Ladygodivasroom, I don't understand your last post.

Pixiemeat · 11/11/2018 18:55

I've read the replies.

And I have discovered that a lot of people like to put poppies on their animals. It still doesn't sit well with me, it seems to make a bit of a mockery of truly, honestly, remembering the horrors of war.

But those cats did get a lot of likes, I'll give them that

Well I think we can all agree this is not tasteful or some soul on here pitch up to defend this crassness....

Ladygodivasroom, I don't understand your last post

I do and they are making a good point.

MysticFlyTrap · 11/11/2018 18:57

Aww I think it's really sweet tbh, love a pet pic. Beats all the boasting pics and selfies that grace fb these days or bitchy posts about people lol

Growingboys · 11/11/2018 18:57

This post made me smile!

I don't think it's any different to ppl posting pics of babies in eg Arsenal babygros.

Neither are things I would do but harmless!

cricketmum84 · 11/11/2018 19:03

Animal Aid stopped selling poppies because of this bullshit. "The sacrifices animals made" suggests they had some sort of choice in the matter, rather than the truth which is that they were sacrificed.

And what about the countless young men conscripted? Did they have a choice? Did they want to leave their families at 17 years old to almost certainly die? Or were they also a sacrifice?
