To ask people to help me find palm oil free products.

After the Iceland ad I've decided I need to stop putting off searching for products that don't contain palm oil and actually do it. Obviously I know Iceland's own range will be palm oil free but what about other brands and products?

I bought a peanut butter last week called Pip N Nut which is palm oil free and tasty but that's as far as I've managed shopping wise so far.

If you have found products, groceries and toiletries which are palm oil free please share them here. Maybe if people had a quick list of products that they know don't contain palm oil more busy shoppers will make those choices.

I've heard there is also the option of sustainable palm oil sources so I'd be interested in knowing more about this too.

It's not a moogoo equivalent but friendly soap does not use palm oil (whereas Dove etc does)

www.friendlysoap.co.uk/product/lavender-geranium-shampoo-bar/

Thanks for the other links shared as I can see where I've been going wrong, focusing on plastic and didn't look at the omnipresence of palm oil.

OhHolyJesus · 10/11/2018 15:06

PP who was looking for a palm oil free label - on wwf link also from a PP.

I've been boycotting palm oil for some time and it's disheartening that more and more products contain it, from Tunnock Tea Cakes to Cornish pasties. I also include sustainably grown as I dislike its taste as well as for the environmental impact.

This link has some good info: www.travelfordifference.com/list-palm-oil-free-products/ The following I found quite a long time ago and not sure how up to date it is: drpongo.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/productpalmoillist2012flexweek.pdf

I'm really pleased to see more people becoming aware. If we can spread the word maybe one day we can have a big enough impact on companies that they have to stop using palm oil.

theluckiest · 10/11/2018 16:07

Slightly off the point but I'm a bit confused why Iceland are saying that this is their 'Christmas ad' - I definitely remember watching it with my Y2 class back in September on YouTube!! Think Greenpeace originally made it/commissioned it...

It's a moot point because it's an incredibly important message and the more that people see it & discuss it, the better. My class were absolutely horrified as they'd been learning about rainforests...

(Cynical me just wondered why this ad is now linked with Iceland. I also considered that someone in their PR dept is a genius & clearly doing a sterling job as this has now gone viral with the 'ban'..Grin)

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 10/11/2018 17:23

Iceland and Greenpeace struck a deal for Iceland to use it for their Xmas ad @theluckiest

theluckiest · 10/11/2018 18:04

Aha! That makes sense. Thanks giraffe

I was going to say friendly soap ^^
Absolutely love the lemongrass and hemp soap bar.
They also do shampoo bars which I am going to try soon.

AlpacaLypse · 10/11/2018 22:17

Some good ideas to track down shampoo, thanks everyone.

holidaylady · 10/11/2018 22:40

Basically any palm oil is grown on land that was rainforest. So 'sustainable' can mean many things, but it still means rainforest has been chopped down.

I personally don't believe there is any sustainable palm oil.

I've never shipped in Iceland but I will be now. I'm so impressed at them having the courage to follow through their entire supply chain to remove it.

As a food stuff palm oil is bloody amazing, that's why it's in everything. It is very stable, has a good range of acceptable temperature, mixes well, doesn't taste. I'm sure there are more too.

Good on Iceland. And imo it never used to be a common ingredient because there wasn't much farmed. But now it's in demand by food manufacturers it is farmed more. Is more rainforests cut down.

Head and shoulders has removed it from their ingredients. Everyone else can too.

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 10/11/2018 22:51

I have been trying to get people interested in this for ages, and read all the labels before I buy anything. One of the problems is that most vegan ready made stuff includes it as an alternative to butter.

I will post a list of names for palm oil , in case no-one has done it (sorry not read the whole thread yet).

I think online shopping should have an option to block products containing button and then you can choose palm oil, dairy, gluten etc and so after doing this you know everything showing for the rest of your shop is ok to buy....

Except you'd prob not get any choice at all so maybe .com grocery shopping isn't quite ready for that 🤨

franklymydearidontgivea · 10/11/2018 23:09

www.adamandeco.com

These guys stock a range of palm oil free soaps that are very good, customer service exceptional too.

Orchiddingme · 11/11/2018 00:06

I was just about to buy some Jason shampoo based on this thread- but when I checked the ingredients, at least two appear on the list above. Argh- how is it going to be possible to really avoid palm oil, however lovely the advert is?

Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultane, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Glycerin, Sodium Laurylglucosides Hydroxypropylsulfonate

Orchiddingme · 11/11/2018 00:11

Or- would this be good enough?

What is the source of Palm Oil used in Jason Products?

Palm oils and/or palm derived products used in Jason products are obtained from sources that support organic and/or sustainable palm practices, which protect natural forests and wildlife.

news.mongabay.com/2018/10/palm-oil-executives-arrested-in-bribery-scandal-in-indonesia/

There is no 'sustainable palm oil'. The palm oil industry is to rife with corruption, that certification of palm oil as being from 'sustainable sources' are easy to come by.

This Seggiano chocolate spread is divine and my favourite but not cheap!
