After the Iceland ad I've decided I need to stop putting off searching for products that don't contain palm oil and actually do it. Obviously I know Iceland's own range will be palm oil free but what about other brands and products?

I bought a peanut butter last week called Pip N Nut which is palm oil free and tasty but that's as far as I've managed shopping wise so far.

If you have found products, groceries and toiletries which are palm oil free please share them here. Maybe if people had a quick list of products that they know don't contain palm oil more busy shoppers will make those choices.

I've heard there is also the option of sustainable palm oil sources so I'd be interested in knowing more about this too.

I read quite an interesting article this morning which annoyingly I can’t find again now.

But it pointed that if developed Western countries ban/boycott palm oil products there would be less of drive towards sustainable palm oil production in the wider market, as less developed countries - namely Indonesia and China would continue their exploits but without a regard for any environmental standards.

There seems a massive lack of information about how the palm oil used in most of our shopping is sourced - sustainably or not and this is what concerns me. Alternatives to palm oil, as others have said, aren’t produced in the most ethical ways either.

Overconsumption definitely seems at the heart of it and I for one plan on totally reviewing my lifestyle to reduce my own footprint.

KittyVonCatsworth · 10/11/2018 11:39

Meridian peanut butter isn’t made with any palm oil. They do a crunchy and smooth version 😋

MrsJayy · 10/11/2018 11:42

Sainsbury own label is palm oilfree , btw forerro who make nutella are using sustainable palm oil

MissMarplesKnitting · 10/11/2018 11:42

moogooskincare.co.uk/hair-and-scalp-care/milk-shampoo.html

You can't go far wrong with moogoo stuff: they're trying to be eco friendly, and their hair stuff is curly girl method suitable and great for itchy or sensitive scalps.

I've never had a dud product from them. They're not cheap but they tick so many boxes. I get it from a local pharmacy but they're great online and send samples too.

MrsJayy · 10/11/2018 11:43

I think conservationist are leaning towards no complete ban

ferntwist · 10/11/2018 11:44

Following this thread after seeing the heartbreaking Iceland ad this morning. I want to help save the ‘rang-tangs’, as the little girl says.

Zintox · 10/11/2018 11:44

Valsoia do a palm oil free chocolate spread that's also dairy free. Ocado sell it.

Belindabauer · 10/11/2018 11:46

Watching with interest.

MrsJayy · 10/11/2018 11:47

For an advert that is banned from Tv apparently it has had over 6 million views that is amazing

hidinginthenightgarden · 10/11/2018 11:48

Kirkland (costco) chocolate spread has no palm oil in! I just checked and am super relieved!

jaseyraex · 10/11/2018 11:50

Great thread. Started buying Iceland own label products about a month ago and for the most part it's all pretty good. Would be great to find alternatives for things I have to buy elsewhere though, shampoo and toiletries seem to be what I'm struggling with most.

JustBeingJobless · 10/11/2018 11:51

I get this one from Aldi and it’s lovely :)

MissMarplesKnitting · 10/11/2018 11:53

Seriously, moogoo for toiletries.

I use loads of their stuff, and it's great: from the sunscreen to the lip balms.

iVampire · 10/11/2018 11:54

Is that list above definitely just other names for palm oil?

It looks to me as if it might be an extract from a longer list of ‘ingredients to swerve’, because it includes sodium laureth sulphate (foaming agent and degreaser - surely not an oil product?)

IggyAce · 10/11/2018 11:56

www.ethicalconsumer.org/palm-oil-free-list

This might help us get started.

I also discovered cocoa loco when I was looking for palm oil free chocolate. Now I haven’t tried it yet as I gave up cake, chocolate, crisps and biscuits for October, but if anyone has feedback would be appreciated.

fuckitbuckit · 10/11/2018 12:05

I have to admit I knew absolutely nothing about palm oil and it's impact on the environment before this advert. It's not something I have ever come across or heard about. I had heard of palm oil but I had no idea what it actually was, how we got it and the impact it had on our wildlife. But I will be making a conscious effort to check labelling from now on and buy as little palm oil as I possibly can.

I am actually glad the advert was banned, because now it has become so much bigger and people are actively sharing it, posting about it and shaming everyone who tried to keep it under wraps. It has completely blown up and it's amazing!

fuckitbuckit · 10/11/2018 12:07

Also a bloody huge well done to Iceland for standing up for what's right when they could have potentially lost out on a lot of money. It's about time the big companies took charge. I have loads of respect for them.

gamerwidow · 10/11/2018 12:09

iVampire
The list is from the world wildlife page specifically about palm oil use so I think it’s fairly reliable but I am not a chemist so am happy to be corrected.

I second MooGoo for toiletries. I've been using their products for a few years now.

iVampire · 10/11/2018 12:24

Thanks for the fuller link.

That knocks out just about every foaming product there is. Including toothpaste

MrsJayy · 10/11/2018 12:35

Hopelly this link works it explains sustainability better

TurkeyBear · 10/11/2018 12:37

Wait Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is fucking Palm Oil?! What?!

I agree we need sustainable palm oil, but for cosmetics and tolietries.

I DO NOT want palm oil in any of my food. It is a known carcinogen, accellerates the growth of cancers and SHOULD NOT be ingested at all. It is grim stuff!! Really grim. We shouldn't be eating it full stop.

falaff · 10/11/2018 12:47

The most important thing is to buy products with RESPONSIBLE or SUSTAINABLE palm oil. The problem is more complicated than it sounds regarding biodiversity loss as other forms of vegetable oil use about 8x more land. In other words, simply replacing palm oil with alternative products is not going to stop biodiversity loss but just move it to other environments like savannahs where other species will be threatened.

It's a really complicated issue.

VelociraptorRex · 10/11/2018 12:55

MooGoo looks wonderful and I like their attitude, but it's made on the other side of the world Confused (I will confess I got excited when I saw Perth, thinking they meant the one in Scotland Blush) anyone know of a UK-based equivalent?
