After the Iceland ad I've decided I need to stop putting off searching for products that don't contain palm oil and actually do it. Obviously I know Iceland's own range will be palm oil free but what about other brands and products?

I bought a peanut butter last week called Pip N Nut which is palm oil free and tasty but that's as far as I've managed shopping wise so far.

If you have found products, groceries and toiletries which are palm oil free please share them here. Maybe if people had a quick list of products that they know don't contain palm oil more busy shoppers will make those choices.

I've heard there is also the option of sustainable palm oil sources so I'd be interested in knowing more about this too.

I'm still looking too (for shampoo/conditioner).

It is really quite hard to be ethical. I am trying to really reduce our plastic use. Bought peanut butter in a glass jar the other day as was usually buying a plastic one. Just checked the ingredients - palm oil! Then finding decent substitutes and they are from overseas so then there's the air miles.... I wish it could be easier. I think the main thing is just massively reducing our consumption actually. Living much simpler lives.

VelociraptorRex · 10/11/2018 13:22

@Plentyoffishnets you are so right. I'm trying to use local markets, butchers etc where possible, avoid packaging, make all meals from scratch, use natural fibre clothes, DS gets second-hand clothes (I do love a good pre-owned eBay haul Blush) and we don't buy plastic tat, but there's so many hidden things that we're just too used to having. We're trying to make the move to producing all our power for the house from solar and ground source, but it's the little niceties in life that we have forgotten are luxuries that are causing he damage Sad

Venison · 10/11/2018 13:23

It's easy enough to make peanut butter. I make this, cashew and almond milk and butter so I know what I am eating. I also make dog biscuits with sardines and peanut and loads of other stuff. It's trial and error but pretty good usually.

breastfeedingclownfish · 10/11/2018 13:25

Meridian peanut butter has only salt added, so has the original peanut oil. Better still, whizz blanched unsalted peanuts in the food processor and store in the fridge.

greendale17 · 10/11/2018 13:29

Does anyone know of a Nutella alternative?

^I think you will find that Nutella uses sustainable palm oil.

List of sustainable palm oil brands-

I agree with other posters - people need to switch to suppliers using sustainable palm oil not boycott. And Nutella is from a sustainable source already!

seventhgonickname · 10/11/2018 13:40

For peanut butter Travis also make 100â„…peanuts one.No other ingredients.
I am completely palm oil free as I feel using sustainable stuff keeps the demand there. It is also unnecessary.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 10/11/2018 13:41

Whole Earth do a palm oil free version, as do Meridian.

VisitorsEntrance · 10/11/2018 13:49

Why do we need alternatives to palm oil though?
It wasn’t in most food 20 years ago. It certainly wasn’t in Cadbury’s chocolate for example.

The problem with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and other similar names is that is can be palm oil, but not always.

I try as much as I can to avoid it and I am happy to pay more for things like Gü chocolate spread because I can afford to. I know that for many people they would like to take the stance but they have a budget to balance, and I don’t blame them. I vote with what I buy and on behalf of those who can’t afford to.

Sadly Aldi chocolate has palm oil in it now.

VisitorsEntrance · 10/11/2018 13:57

Sun pat peanut butter is palm oil free.

Tweakanddashi · 10/11/2018 14:02

Tesco have just started doing peanut butter that just has peanuts as the ingredient.

RayM · 10/11/2018 14:05

I read a thread about environmentally friendly products this morning. A poster linked www.friendlysoap.co.uk/ which is palm oil free. Just got myself some soap 🙂.

Sorry I don't know how to link!!

RayM · 10/11/2018 14:06

Oh you can see!

JellyBears · 10/11/2018 14:09

Iceland?

TheClitterati · 10/11/2018 14:14

Is there a palm oil free mark?

I read a few lists of ingredients while shopping today (Waitrose & Aldi) and put stuff back that had palm oil in. But it's laborious and it's not in bold like allergens. It did get me thinking that if something had that many ingredients in it I shouldn't be buying it.

Ive never shopped at Iceland but I will go and have a look.

seventhgonickname · 10/11/2018 14:18

Have just been told it's in jammu dodgers now. Why?

seventhgonickname · 10/11/2018 14:20

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 10/11/2018 14:23

mydogisthebest · 10/11/2018 14:26

Me and DH are trying not to buy anything with palm oil in but it is really difficult.

I am so pleased Sun Pat peanut butter does not contain palm oil because it's the only one I like. Tried just about all of them but only Sun Pat crunchy for me

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/11/2018 14:32

I don’t know whether that’s true, but I read today that glycerin is made out of palm oil and that would mean that most cosmetic products will be affected.

Does anyone know about this?

I would be very happy for a campaign to have every single form of palm oil clearly labelled.

aussiechick01 · 10/11/2018 14:47

This gives loads of info especially about the environmental costs of using other plant based oils.

DropZoneOne · 10/11/2018 14:54

Picked up this in Tesco which is palm oil free - it's only 4 ingredients too, peanuts, coconut sugar, cocoa powder and sea salt.
Unfortunately, it tastes like peanut butter rather than nutella but it might help someone! Will try the GU one next.

InvisibleLlama · 10/11/2018 14:57

This is a fab book for food alternatives - there's a really good Nutella recipe too: www.amazon.co.uk/How-Food-Shapes-Your-Child/dp/1911505327/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=louise+mercieca&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1541861787&sr=8-1

InvisibleLlama · 10/11/2018 14:58

Nutella might use sustainable palm oil but it's packed full of sugar.
