To want to make my bed like a hotel bed

Basically we’ve had the same duvet and pillows for six years. They are the cheapest feather ones you can get from Argos. I grew up quite poor and didn’t even know what a feather duvet was til I was 25 so they seem pure luxury to me.
I really want my bed to feel amazing. We have a good bed and decent mattress but my pillows are saggy and shite. I like linen bedding but have only one option in that which is from H&M.
I’d like to invest in a new duvet/pillows and bedding that will feel like I’m in a hotel. I don’t have loads of money but I could buy stuff bit by bit. People with amazing beds help me!

Agree with @spanishwife

Always have a flat sheet between duvet and you! (don't have to change the effin duvet cover as much!

Pillow protectors are vital. Have you ever seen the state of some pillows when changing the pillow cases?

Anyway. There is nothing like fresh sheets/pillowcases and I don't really care if anyone agrees with me or not, it is the ultimate in indulgence and comfort.

VanGoghsDog · 10/11/2018 16:51

I'm allergic to feathers. But try King of Cotton, their duvets are amazing! And their bed linen. I love my bed!

I have IKEA pillows. Trick is to just replace them every couple of years I think.

I think the person asking about your age was trying to be helpful. There are numerous threads on the menopause area of Mumsnet discussing bedding, as some duvets are better than others at regulating your temperature.

Thomlin · 10/11/2018 20:33

This thread has enabled me 😂 I was out taking the dog a walk this morning, cold muddy and a 10 minute drive from Dunelm so I thought fuck it and spent a good half hour feeling every pillow sample they had out and eagerly checking thread counts.

As a disclaimer my bedding has always been from Primark and is around the £10-£15 price point so you can imagine my pleasure at finding out there is a whole other world of Luxury bedding available to me as an adult. Dunno why it's never occurred to me before now to invest!

Anyway I went for the "Like Down" range of covers, pillows and mattress topper and their kinda hotel inspired plain white 300tc duvet covers. I bought a flat sheet for the first time because I have a mattress, a memory foam topper, a verrrrrrry expensive JL down topper that I bought with a £300 voucher I got on a MN comp, and I've also added the "like down" topper on top of that. A double fitted sheet won't cut it anymore.

So I've just had a wee try and I can safely say I feel like Princess and the Pea lying on a crunchy cloud. Absolutely amazing!!!! My bank balance isn't thanking this thread but by god I am counting the minutes til it's acceptable to go to bed 😂😂.

CS12345 · 10/11/2018 20:41

Sounds heavenly Thom. I'm going to Dunelm in the morning to buy the same duvet and pillows!

jay55 · 10/11/2018 20:44

If you have a house of Fraser closing near you pop in and see if you can get any high threadcount sheets and pillowcases marked down.

Oldraver · 10/11/2018 20:48

Brushed cotton is a good alternative to expensive sheets. I've just made OH a duvet out of Dunlems 'luxury' (or whatever the better ones are) sheets and it is as soft as my 600 thread Christy ones

RetiredNotExpired · 10/11/2018 21:15

Definitely recommend pure cotton sheets, min thread count 200, but 400 - 600tc if you can. Latex pillows are expensive but last for ever.

Having had a memory foam topper (got too hot) and a feather & down topper (not substantial enough) I bought this one from JL about 18 months ago www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-synthetic-soft-touch-washable-dual-layer-mattress-topper/p1519431
It's fantastic, I would highly recommend. It also keeps the bed warmer, without making it too hot. We didn't need to use more than a 10.5 tog duvet with it all through last winter. I have this 'all seasons' goose down duvet www.diamondbedding.co.uk/collections/duvets/products/hungarian-goose-down-duvet?variant=34762032911. I would certainly recommend 100% goosedown if your budget will run to it. That one is significantly cheaper than most; it seems to be well-made but time will tell.

This is my ‘hotel’ bedroom.
One advantage of finding out you can’t have children after buying a three bedroom house is that I have one dressing and makeup room and a bedroom. This is literally all that is in this room.

I second latex pillows. Best thing I’ve ever bought. Amazon!

Oly5 · 10/11/2018 21:26

Dunlopillo pillows are amazing. I thought I’d hate a latex pillow but they are fab!
John Lewis crisp and fresh bedding is also divine. Worth saving up for

wombatron · 10/11/2018 21:40

We have the Hungarian goose down duvet in a summer and a winter tog, still though
Currently using the summer one. Both form
JL. We bought a new pillow each today, £90 each from JL, Siberian down. So far they feel amazing and I probably won't buy a new pillow for 5 years!!

MrsChollySawcutt · 10/11/2018 22:16

Definitely latex pillows. Dunlopillo are good but watch out as they are selling some pillows that only have a latex core with cheaper micro fibre wrapped around it. Those are not good, you want the 100% latex pillows.

I can recommend the Sleepkings organic latex pillows from eBay which are much cheaper (50% less than Dunlopillo) and very good quality and thickness.

Duvet wise it's a wool duvet all the way for me.

hollyhzd · 10/11/2018 22:33

Any recommendations for a heavy duvet that isn't feathers? Most duvets seem to advertise how light they are, I want weight!

Thomlin · 10/11/2018 23:07

holly after being enabled by this thread I went out and bought this from Dunelm

https://www.dunelm.com/product/dorma-sumptuous-down-like-105-tog-duvet-1000099751

It's a 10.5 and feels medium heavy and very crisp and crunchy obviously this is the first night so I can't speak for how it will last, but it was recommended by a pp on this thread.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 11/11/2018 02:09

Those recommending latex pillows- can I ask how hot they get?

I'm impressed that so many of you have said how comfy they are, but as I'm in the throes of menopausal night sweats I'm worried I'll get too hot!

MrsChollySawcutt · 11/11/2018 09:05

Latex pillows don't get hot at all just super smooth and soft. I've had mine for years and years and find all other pillows rubbish in comparison.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 11/11/2018 09:10

Thank you! That sounds promising Smile

beanaseireann · 11/11/2018 10:57

I have a Fine Bedding Co Breathe duvet in a silk duvet cover. It's like sleeping under a cloud.
I will buy again - a sure sign something is good.

hollyhzd · 11/11/2018 13:40

Thanks Thomlin, I will check out the Dunelm oneSmile

VisitorsEntrance · 11/11/2018 15:06

I’ve been looking into the Dunlopillo.
Which ones do people have? I need a pillow intervention.

thenightsky · 11/11/2018 20:07

Dunlopillow… I have mediums. I do have hard one, but find it a bit too hard. They last years... mine are about 10 years old. They are washable too, but do take bloody ages to dry.

Cynderella · 11/11/2018 20:56

See, when I decided to upgrade, I read mixed reviews on mattress toppers and decided against. Now I think I want one :-)

We have an electric blanket, but now we have a 13.5tog duvet, we'd be in danger of melting if we switched the blanket on. I can see it becoming redundant.

Our mattress is OK - would it be wonderful with a topper? And what should I look at? Has to be cruelty free not no feathers or down. Would prefer cotton/wool and not synthetics especially if I'm going to wash it - assume they can be washed at home?

VisitorsEntrance · 11/11/2018 21:30

I had a John Lewis mattress topper.
It was lovely for about a year or so but it ended up developing a ridge down the middle.

Jamiefraserskilt · 11/11/2018 21:36

Dunelm has hotel style bedding and linen.
