To want to make my bed like a hotel bed

Basically we’ve had the same duvet and pillows for six years. They are the cheapest feather ones you can get from Argos. I grew up quite poor and didn’t even know what a feather duvet was til I was 25 so they seem pure luxury to me.
I really want my bed to feel amazing. We have a good bed and decent mattress but my pillows are saggy and shite. I like linen bedding but have only one option in that which is from H&M.
I’d like to invest in a new duvet/pillows and bedding that will feel like I’m in a hotel. I don’t have loads of money but I could buy stuff bit by bit. People with amazing beds help me!

I recently bought a new duvet. It was a ‘special offer’ John Lewis one. It’s one they only bring in for the sales. It’s all seasons and although the one I have at the

Another vote for soak and sleep. Getting into my bed is a joy. It cost us a small fortune as we bought it all at once, but I have genuinely never slept so well. We have all white linen and every night feel like a treat, I don’t regret spending a penny of it. You spend 8 (ish) hours each day in bed..... and a good nights sleep makes everything better........

VisitorsEntrance · 10/11/2018 08:04

Clearly posted too soon.
My duvet pictured above is really thick and soft without being too hot. My other all seasons can feel thin

buttercupsyrup · 10/11/2018 08:15

@MrsWooster bargain beddings has closed! Was very excited at bagging a bargain!

VisitorsEntrance · 10/11/2018 08:16

Do look into our of Eden though.
Much cheaper than similar at John Lewis amazing quality.

silkpyjamasallday · 10/11/2018 08:17

I second the recommendation for a mattress topper, I have a 5 inch thick goose feather and down one I got from eBay (new), its like sleeping on a cloud! I have friends who have memory foam toppers that they say are great, I just worry about overheating.

The best and most important thing is the bottom sheet, a high thread count is best but often thread counts higher than 500 are a con, as the threads are double wrapped it's not actually 1000 threads per sq inch as it should be, the crazy prices are not justified. I've bought 1000 thread count before and it wasn't as good after washing as my usual 400 tc sheets, it seemed to get denser which is how I found out about the thread count lies. John Lewis have a huge range of thread counts and you can chose crisp or sateen sheets. I have pure silk pillowcases too as they stop your hair tangling and are apparently good for your skin too, plus they are the best if you like to turn pillows over to the cool side.

My bed is superking so exciting expensive to buy for, however, once DH left I was dead set on having nice linen.
I get mine from Wilkinson's. It's Wilko's Best range in white. It's beautiful. It's thick and smooth if that makes sense? Only £38 I think too for sure king duvet and oxford pillow cases. Flat sheet is £16. I love it and it's affordable.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 10/11/2018 08:19

So many typos. Hmm posting from phone

Haven't read the whole thread. I agree with Latex pillows, but be careful to get the right thickness, as it's an expensive mistake if you get it wrong. The thickness you need will depend in part on whether you are a side-sleep or back-sleeper.

I have this 18cm one:-

Previously I bought some cheaper brand ones, which were fine in their quality, but turned out to be useless, as they were 12cm, so one wasn't thick enough and two were two thick. (Though I suppose you could combine one with another cheap pillow to get the right height, but that won't look nice.)

Will be reading all the replies to this thread as looking for a new duvet for DD14 for Xmas. My main issue when looking at duvets in shops is that they are all wrapped up in packaging so u can't even feel what they are like.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 10/11/2018 08:33

VisitorsEntrance Thank you so much for that link. Hotel bathrobes at reasonable prices too. In fact all manner of things I might want......

Cumberlover76 · 10/11/2018 08:43

We've just got a new bed and I invested in all new bedding, apart from duvet to come soon. I've tried to go as much natural fibre as possible. Wool mattress topper and amazing wool pillows from The Wool Room and bed linen from Secret Linen Store which is lovely. I think will get a wool duvet as the wool pillows are so good. I love my new bed so much!

Doilooklikeatourist · 10/11/2018 08:44

linen
I get all my supplies from here

mouthkisses · 10/11/2018 09:14

If it's crunchy sheets you are after, you might want to try starching them as you iron. I starch my pillowcases and top sheet.

VisitorsEntrance · 10/11/2018 09:15

Glad to hear it GetOff. They are a small family run business but the sheets are excellent quality.

mugalug · 10/11/2018 09:29

This is my new fav home brand

www.hillhousehome.com/

So tasteful!

CherryPavlova · 10/11/2018 09:42

White company for bedlinen. Sales worth waiting for.

We have Feather and Black mattresses which are comfortable and durable. There are very expensive ones but Cashmere is too hot; their silk or Egyptian cotton ones are cheaper and, in my view, better.

Pillows are ordinary memory foam and down ones in assorted firmness. Probably John Lewis. Duvets would also be John Lewis but lighter ones rather than great thick mountains of hypoallergenic polyester. Down are best. With a counterpane for colder nights and to keep grime from suitcases and clothes off the duvet cover.

I think it’s not only about the bed. It’s lighting levels, temperature of the room, getting rid of superfluous little standby lights from phones, clocks, televisions etc.

Monestasi · 10/11/2018 10:12

After my divorce, I gave my bed and bedding away to local women's shelter and bought the best bed, pillows and bed linen I could afford.

I have created that luxury hotel look and feel. I really recommend fat pillows, a quilted bedspread and a thick fluffy blanket (at bottom of bed during winter time) to achieve the look.

In my quest to achieve this however, I realised I don't really like softer satin type sheets. The crunchier the cotton the better.

Given the amount of time we spend in our beds, we owe it to ourselves to have the best quality bed and bedding we can budget for.

Monty27 · 10/11/2018 10:33

Tk Max all the way

gruffalomom · 10/11/2018 10:47

We have an igel mattress, dunlipillo latex pillows, a dorma duvet and high threadcount Egyptian cotton white sheets and duvet sets. My bed is favourite place to be!! bed is a super king so all cost a bomb but best investment ever!

ImNotReallyAWaitress · 10/11/2018 10:53

I ended up buying this all seasons set and loved it so much we got it for our guest room too.
www.finebedding.co.uk/products/duvets/spundown-duvet

The 4.5 tog is warm enough to do us through winter in Sweden when used with brushed cotton linen.

TeenagersDoMyHeadIn · 10/11/2018 10:57

Boundary Mill is fab for top notch bargain bedding if you are near one.

Asda also have some great value pure cotton sets. I have one in pink paisley which is lovely.

High thread count is a bit of a mixed blessing IMO, can be too hot in summer I find, even with a summer duvet.

CS12345 · 10/11/2018 11:04

For opinion, for what it's worth.

Wool duvets feel flat and dead and don't have the crunchy, snuggly feeling.

Please don't buy feather pillows/duvets. It's so cruel.

There was a similar thread just recently and the Dunelm 'like feather's range was recommended for that 'crunchy' feeling www.dunelm.com/product/dorma-sumptuous-down-like-105-tog-duvet-1000099751?searchTerm=sumptuous

MissMarplesKnitting · 10/11/2018 11:06

We have IKEA cotton which are super value but tbh they don't compare with the John Lewis one we have. It's 500 count cotton and is a total bastard to get looking nice but omg it just feels amazing to sleep in.

Looking for new pillows as both DH and I have had neck and shoulder issues. Current memory foam cheap ones need to go...

Spam88 · 10/11/2018 11:21

If you go latex, go for dunlopillo. Other brands I've just seen are just a latex core in a hollowfibre pillow.
