To want to make my bed like a hotel bed

Basically we’ve had the same duvet and pillows for six years. They are the cheapest feather ones you can get from Argos. I grew up quite poor and didn’t even know what a feather duvet was til I was 25 so they seem pure luxury to me.
I really want my bed to feel amazing. We have a good bed and decent mattress but my pillows are saggy and shite. I like linen bedding but have only one option in that which is from H&M.
I’d like to invest in a new duvet/pillows and bedding that will feel like I’m in a hotel. I don’t have loads of money but I could buy stuff bit by bit. People with amazing beds help me!

Will do, thanks!!

Tretchikoff · 10/11/2018 11:27

I think LaRedoute do linen duvet covers.
They've got £30 of £60 spend, £50 off £100 spend and £100 of £200 spend at the moment.

Simba mattress

I’m looking for a cruelty free crunchy duvet- John Lewis seem more ethical. The poster who spoke of the hypoallergenic Jl duvet- do you have the link please?

I 💕 my tempur pillow. It made me want to wrap with joy

Wheretheresawill1 · 10/11/2018 11:38

Weep
not wrap!

lostlalaloopsy · 10/11/2018 11:41

I always buy 100% cotton duvet covers and sheets now. I was same as you and never had anything expensive growing up. I only have 2 sets though which I rotate, I also iron them before going on which adds to the luxury I think!!

Mercier1 · 10/11/2018 11:54

Wow thank you for all these replies. Making copious notes as we speak. I had given the ethics of feather some thought but having read the thread and comments that not even the ethical options are kosher I’m tempted by the dunhelm duvet that was shared.

Also I currently don’t iron my bedding so maybe that will help when I make the change!

I think the latex pillows sound amazing so I’ll try those in JL as was recommend.

For bedding I think if I have one super crisp white cotton set to alternate with a linen set I’ll be on to a winner.

I’m now wondering about a wool topper for the mattress. The mattress is Hypnos as was £1K and it’s fine but it’s not amazing at all... I slept in one at a premier inn which is what made me go for it but I don’t feel like ours is as nice...

Also to the lady who commented on my age ... how the hell would you know or care about my age?

Can't remember the name of the company now, but I emailed Center Parcs a few years ago to ask where they got their crackling duvets from and I ordered them for the dds. They are lovely

Confusedbeetle · 10/11/2018 12:22

Dunelm

ItsTheGloaming · 10/11/2018 12:26

I have 1000 count cotton duvet cover, sheets and pillow cases. Think they are from king of cotton in their sale. I have a wool topper and a wool duvet which are wonderful! My duvet makes a crackling sound and it's warm in winter and cool in summer....... And no ethical worries as with feathers.

ItsTheGloaming · 10/11/2018 12:27

Oh and we have wool pillows too!

tiggerkid · 10/11/2018 12:30

IKEA has a reasonable range of down pillows and duvets. I bought one with something like 85% down and 15% feather a couple of years ago. And pillows from there too. Really pleased with both.

Naturally that meant I had to buy bedding from IKEA too because their duvets and pillow cases aren't standard size a lot of the time but that's fine. They have a good range of nice bedding.

A good mattress is key though. Independent springs and all that. Then a good 600 thread count bedsheet and I am happy :) In fact, much happier than in any hotel :)

Best of luck!

spanishwife · 10/11/2018 12:41

My top tricks are:

An extra flat sheet between you and the duvet
Pillow protectors (nice thick ones)
Mattress protector (something quilted and soft)

Of course, buy lovely high thread count sheets, a good quality duvet and some nice pillows.

Black Friday is coming up, so you might be able to get down great deals on House of Fraser, Debenhams, John Lewis, M&S etc

spanishwife · 10/11/2018 12:43

I wouldn't recommend IKEA bedding or pillows, my sister had some when she moved to uni and it got so lumpy and bunched up after a year or so

I got a great duvet in black Friday a few years ago, Fogarty I think from Debenhams. I always buy in a size bigger than my bed.

Bin85 · 10/11/2018 12:50

I find a mattress topper makes bed too hot

Mercier1 · 10/11/2018 14:55

We have some Ikea pillows on currently and they are awful so I won’t bother wth those.

I have an expensive duvet and sheets from soak and sleep that I HATE. Well the sheets are lovely 600tc cotton, but do not fit the duvet properly so I end up with floppy ill fitting corners that piss me off. Every time I use the sheets I grump and mentally write a bad review I’ve never posted! My m&s sheets fit the duvet much better.

It’s a clearance special. I think they only have it in for the sales. I’ll see what I can find.

VisitorsEntrance · 10/11/2018 16:09

Here is the details of the JL duvet I posted earlier. I’m so happy with it it’s all big a fluffy. However it’s not in stock at the moment. It’s a Special Buy. It is printed on the box and labels. It might well come back for the January sales.

Claireshh · 10/11/2018 16:18

Another recommendation for latex dunlopillow pillows.

I have a 13.5tog snuggledown down and feather duvet. It is light but oh so snuggly. I really loved it.

AsleepAllDay · 10/11/2018 16:20

Egyptian cotton for sure! Silk is really expensive, linen can get creased and satin just falls off the bed

I bought my new sheets from Oasis and they're really good quality, very deep colours and nice shades

ScandiNoir · 10/11/2018 16:20

The Wool Room..we have wool duvet, wool pillows, wool topper, You don't overheat, the duvet is light, our snuffly allergies have completely gone and it's sustainable and ethical too!

Loyaultemelie · 10/11/2018 16:25

I didn't know you could get a 20 tog ShockI'm always freezing so this will have to be investigated further

littlecloudling · 10/11/2018 16:31

I've found my people

AsleepAllDay · 10/11/2018 16:34

I would stop at a 13 tog if you have double glazing. Recently bought 13.5 and I'm stifling

sansou · 10/11/2018 16:47

Definitely Dunlopillo pillows - I gre up with them. I went off-piste and bought cheaper pillows which I totally regretted (false economy) and have reverted back to Dunlopillo. They are expensive but worth it in that they keep their shape and don't go lumpy!
