OP posts:
Deliphant · 09/11/2018 13:37

I like Mumma - DD calls me that when she wants something...

buttercupsyrup · 09/11/2018 13:38

HUBBALUB.

MoaningSickness · 09/11/2018 13:38

Wait what's the difference (in pronunciation) between mumma and mama?

The difference between a u and an aHmm? Confusing to explain by text, are there accents where 'u's and 'a's are the same?

Mama is the same sound twice, like Dada, or Nana.

Mumma is Mum with an A at the end.

I did try to impress the point on DH by calling him Duda. With strong emphasis on calling him a dud.

Camomila · 09/11/2018 13:40

I wanted to be mamma (Italian) but DS can’t seem to pronounce it and so calls me mama/mumma like his friends call their mummys.

Or he calls me ‘mummy camomila’ or ‘my camomila’ as obvuously that’s what other people call me.

natwebb79 · 09/11/2018 13:44

I don't find it annoying when small children say it but it ground my gears when a certain type of mum felt the need to congratulate me for breast feeding/putting my baby in a sling (they called it 'baby wearing' and it was like a strange cult round here!) by saying 'Well done, mama!'. What??

SydneyCarton · 09/11/2018 13:45

Hubbalub Shock I saw “husbot” on Instagram and thought that was bad enough! “Kiddo” winds me up as well but I can’t quite work out why

Drogosnextwife · 09/11/2018 13:45

@croissantmuffin

It is! And strangely heart breaking, although it's pretty terrifying 😂

kaytee87 · 09/11/2018 13:50

@natwebb79 maybe they were trying to be supportive to a new mum Hmm

QueenOfTheAndals · 09/11/2018 13:54

There's nothing wrong with "mama", children have been calling their mothers that for years.

I assume what OP is referring to is the Instamum habit of calling themselves a "mumma". As in The Modern Mumma etc. Am I right @Imadetherightchoice?

VickieCherry · 09/11/2018 13:55

I've always called my mum mummy, as she refuses to answer to anything else. I did try using her real name when I was an embarrassed teen, but she ignored me. She now gets the odd slightly sarky 'Mamaa' or mother, but usually just mummy. I'm nearly 37.

pearlow · 09/11/2018 13:55

How are you all pronouncing it?

To me- mama = muh-mar(rhymes with car) not mar-mar which sounds very american.

But what does mumma sound like?

natwebb79 · 09/11/2018 13:56

@kaytee87 I wasn't a new mum. And it was the same mums who snarled at other mums who dared to use buggies and bottles. And later blurted on about the evil of purees. 'Mama'. Urgh.

HugoBearsMummy · 09/11/2018 13:58

Depends in what context, for example a bio on insta stating 'Stay at Home Mumma of 3' or something similar is a bit cheesey but a child calling there mother Mumma/Mama is not. DS (3Yrs) has always called me Mumma and DH Dadda (Instead of Mummy or Daddy) can't see a problem with it, he'll grow out of it at school when it'll be uncool & we'll just be Mum and Dad then lol ;-)

HugoBearsMummy · 09/11/2018 14:12

Also I thought Mumma/Mama/Mamma were the same word, just spelt differently to reflect the person's accent, ie. I'm from the South so pronounced Mumma as in an 'Uh' U sound, but someone from the North would pronounce it as Mamma 'Ah' A sound?
Like Glass and Glarrss or Bath and Barrrth IYSWIM?

kaytee87 · 09/11/2018 14:15

@pearlow why would it rhyme with car Confused

Mumma - muh-mah

Mama - Mah-Mah

HellenaHandbasket · 09/11/2018 14:19

A child calling their parent whatever is very different to adult referring to themselves as such. It isn't the word for me per se.

My kids call me mama or mummy, I don't refer to myself as anything.

I call my mum mum, she was mummy until my late teens. In my defense, that was the norm. I have a few friends bolder than me who still call their parents mummy and daddy.

tasdee · 09/11/2018 14:20

pearlow The a sounds like 'ah' (have you done phonics?) There's no letter or sound r. Mummer rhyming with car is something else Hmm

Mama sounds like ma-ma
Mumma would be muh-muh

I was mama in the toddler stage then it became a simple mum, it was a natural progression using a more grown up fully formed word rather than the early sounds a child uses before the develop all their speech sounds. I've never met an adult who used mummy.

blueskiesandforests · 09/11/2018 14:26

I hear Mama the German way, which sounds nothing like Mumma. However the "taking doll which says Mama, Mama!" type pronunciation of Mama is nothing like Mumma either.

Mumma is a sweet little child's mispronunciation, possibly still used privately within a family once the child is older, or a twee adult appropriation of that used on social media...

Mama is the word for mum in lots of languages. My kids never call me Mama but they refer to me as "meine Mama" when talking to their friends because we live in Germany. All their friends call their mothers Mama (or occasionally Mam, but I'm 90% sure that's dialect).

SallyWD · 09/11/2018 14:26

I don't like Mimms or Bubba

SallyWD · 09/11/2018 14:26

Mumma not Mimms!

Mouseville65 · 09/11/2018 14:28

I'm 32 I call my DM mumma, my 5yo DD calls me Mumma, I call her little legs and I refer to my DS as little man all the time ... Iv sure taken a pasting on this thread haha

I cannot stand 'Bubs' tho so the poster who linked Mumma and bubs is wrong 😂

NoBarbaraGood · 09/11/2018 14:35

Sometimes, I have actual physical pangs that my only child is a teenager now, and I am no longer the mother of a small child.

Then I think of Instagram, and I cheer right up. I feel sorry for all of those feeling the social pressure that it seems to create, whether they participate in it or not.

(Doesn't stop me from dying at hubbalub though.)

pearlow · 09/11/2018 14:41

With my accent ma rhymes with car.

kaytee87 · 09/11/2018 14:42

@NoBarbaraGood I have a 2yo and have never been on Instagram Smile feel no pressure from it because I'm genuinely not aware of what's on it (unless I read threads like this).

kaytee87 · 09/11/2018 14:43

@pearlow but surely you know there's no 'R' sound and it's just your accent? And that Mama doesn't actually rhyme with Car
