BillywigSting · 09/11/2018 12:55

Mum, mam, mammy and mummy (for young children) are all fine but MUMMA?

Nope.

Gtfo.

You are not being unreasonable.

Donna1001 · 09/11/2018 12:55

Call ME mum, not MY mum. 🙄

blueskiesandforests · 09/11/2018 12:57

Why are people saying Mama (mam as in the beginning of mammoth or mamary ...) sounds the same as Mumma (mum as in mummy)?

Do vowels all sound the same to some people? How can Mama and Mumma, ah and uh, sound the same?

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 09/11/2018 12:57

Never heard of little legs but little man is used quite a bit around my way. Makes me cringe but each to their own.

BMOT · 09/11/2018 13:05

Jeez (see what I did there Smile ) People get themselves in a right palaver over other people choice of words on here!

My youngest (now 12) has always called me mumma or mama don't know why its just something he started from a very young age and its stuck. The Mama is now quite often followed by an ohhhhh ohh ooh (Queen style these days) It has nothing to do with Instagram, though by my own admission I am a prolific instagrammer! I love it when he calls me this as it means my little boy isn't quite all grown up yet.

Personally I have tons of words that irritate me:

  • The whole DS DH D this D that
  • Playdates
  • Date night (probably my most hated)

I could go on but in short no YANBU for not liking a word. However, you are being very unreasonable for thinking others should all agree with you and mostly for assuming that the term is only used due to instagram pretentiousness !

HellToupee · 09/11/2018 13:05

My DCs either call me mama or mumma...we’s foreign though.

Eldest DC is now calling me madre. No one knows why and no one really cares.

I have a friend whose DCs call her “mem” as they originally hail from Friesland in The Netherlands.

Who cares as long as YOU know it’s YOUR DC calling for you?!

MemoryOfSleep · 09/11/2018 13:06

IMO the best thing to refer to a small child as is 'wee scone'. Only ever seen it on here and love it but am not Scottish so can't use it myself. Sad

I don't mind mumma, little legs or anything similar, but I don't spend much time on Instagram.

Goinonabearhuntt · 09/11/2018 13:11

Mummmmmeeeeeeeyy is so much worse!

One of my best friends uses a lot of cute words - Mummo/Daddo, daughter is known as "small"

It does grate on me, but we're friends so I just grit my teeth and smile! Grin

kaytee87 · 09/11/2018 13:17

@MemoryOfSleep I love wee scone and wee barra. I am Scottish luckily Grin

My DS when he was a baby called DH 'Gaga' for a short time while figuring out his 'D' and 'G' sounds. He's 2.5 now and says mummy and daddy but I still call my DH gaga occasionally as I think it's cute. Only in private though 😂

BalloonDinosaur · 09/11/2018 13:18

Yeah I can't get worked up about what other people (or their kids) call themselves.

DS is nearly 2 and refers to me and DP as Mama and Dada, it is what he chose to use and I much prefer it to mummy, but he might change as he gets older.

Theweasleytwins · 09/11/2018 13:18

My daughter calls me mumma - trying to get her to call me mummy but she cant quite say it yet

melj1213 · 09/11/2018 13:19

My DD10 calls me either mama or mumma.

Because she was born and brought up in Spain mama is the "normal" term and she has always used it when speaking in both Spanish and English. Since we moved back to the UK her Northern accent has started coming out and as she hears other kids call their mother "mum" it often sounds more like mumma than mama.

Either way it makes it easy to distinguish my DD calling for mama/mumma from other kids shouting for their mam/mum.

gussiefox · 09/11/2018 13:21

@BMOT Maybe I should try to stick to the "oohs" instead of the killing part Grin

babybythesea · 09/11/2018 13:22

My gran uses Mumma when she is talking about her own mother. She worshiped her mum, and her voice and face change when she says it. Hearing 'Mumma', I hear my gran and to me the word is just full of love. It's even more poignant now as my gran is sliding slowly away from me into dementia. I was so pleased when DD2 started to call me Mumma two years ago, of her own accord. She's stopped now. I'm kind of sad about that.
I've never been on Instgram and don't give a crap what someone else calls themselves.

croissantmuffin · 09/11/2018 13:24

@Drogosnextwife bloody good film though!

Duggeedidit · 09/11/2018 13:26

Toddler DS calls me Mama, or mama mama mama mama MUM if I'm taking too long. He had a, thankfully short-lived, phase of muuuum-maaaayyy

Wishimaywishimight · 09/11/2018 13:27

I can't stand 'bubba' or 'bubs' - these words sound utterly ridiculous when coming from the mouth of a grown person. What's so feckin' difficult about saying 'baby'??

AamdC · 09/11/2018 13:27

I have never said wee man but im not scottish and would feel odd saying wee, i have said all manner of endearments to my boys though , i call the youngest "The little one often" and say i love you my gorgeous boy often to either son im.not botheted by Mumma bit yes Jeez annoys me we had Dan TDM phase Hmm

Rachelover40 · 09/11/2018 13:28

I've not come across 'Mumma', surely it should be, 'Mama'?

NOTthepinkranger · 09/11/2018 13:29

Weird how it’s an instamum thing when my Nan was a muma... not sure why it arses people though, then again I don’t understand why people are arsed by a lot of things people do unless it’s seriously offensive or impacts their life

LoopyLou1981 · 09/11/2018 13:32

My DS has a speech delay and still calls me Mumma. I’m just happy he can the word!
Our DD is bubba because that’s all he could manage when she was born.
It might not be to your taste but try not to judge others. Sometimes there are reasons behind things x

zeeboo · 09/11/2018 13:32

My daughter always called me Mumma from babyhood as she couldn't pronounce Mummy. Nothing to do with being smug, twee or poncy on Instagram.

ElainaElephant · 09/11/2018 13:36

I'm mum, but my (grown up) daughter has recent taken to calling me mumma. I like it. My son calls me mother when he's rolling his eyes at me over something.

Can't stand mummy though. Mam and mammy both fine.

I think my dislike of mummy comes from the portrayal of spoilt little girls on TV. They inevitable say mummy.
