AIBU to not wear panty liners every day?

Tbh this is a complete new one for me. Was having a conversation with a friend yesterday who wears panty liners every day and has done since she was 15. I’d never heard of this before and told her so. She told me I was a manky minge Grin and that everybody wore them. Is this true? Thoughts please ....

I didn't start doing so until I hit 39, for some reason for that point every cough spelt danger. No need for me to do so before then though.

Cherries101 · 07/11/2018 17:16

I have a lot of discharge and find I’m more hygenic without liners. e.g I stopped getting thrush when I stopped wearing them. I do, however, sometimes require a second pair of undies.

PerryPerryThePlatypus · 07/11/2018 17:19

Those who do not see the need for them obviously do not suffer from excess discharge. My knickers would be soaked by lunchtime if I didn't wear them. Nothing medically wrong, I was like this since I started puberty. I'm not a consumer droid or dirty or eww.

Women have different levels of discharge. If I didn't use a liner I would need to change sodden underwear at least four times a day. And discharge starts to smell after a while of soaking into a gusset.

catsmother · 07/11/2018 17:21

Do women really have so much vaginal mucus/discharge that it not only soaks their underwear but seeps through to make a visible stain on the back of their skirt/trousers?

Yes.

Yes, they really do!!! As evidenced by the number of women who've already confirmed it on this thread.

Unless they're secret spies from Panty Liner Inc. of course, come to brain wash all the doubting Thomases here for their own nefarious reasons Hmm

Cherries101 · 07/11/2018 17:24

@catsmother hahaha. I have often created a white stain on a chair through underwear and a lined pair of trousers. I wish I was a panty liner spy. At least I’d be getting paid for this shit.

2BorNot2Bvocal · 07/11/2018 17:25

I think they're great for long haul travel. Wear for part of the flight then it's like having a clean pair of knickers without contorting in a plane toilet.

madeyemoodysmum · 07/11/2018 17:25

I do as I have mild stress incontinance
Confused

SirVixofVixHall · 07/11/2018 17:25

Earslaps - I had those sloggi knickers with the towelling, the Double Comfort shorts possibly ? I think they still make them.
Re environmental issues, panty liners have a plastic backing so they are much worse than using kitchen roll etc .The organic ones like Natracare are better.

. I’m trying to reduce plastic use by as much as I can. I’m buying deodorant in cardboard tubes or glass, bamboo toothbrushes etc

YearOfYouRemember · 07/11/2018 17:25

It's perfectly easy to buy non scented ones, Andylion.

weebarra · 07/11/2018 17:26

I do feel a bit 🙄 about the idea of only "older" women being incontinent. I was 36 when I had my last baby. I was then diagnosed with breast cancer and as an aside had my ovaries removed and plunged into menopause.
Apparently, along with ironically, vaginal
Atrophy, incontinence is very common in women who have gone through the menopause irrespective of their age.

Redboxonwheels · 07/11/2018 17:26

Lots here saying their DMs use them. So does mine.

She never needed to use them before peri menopause and menopause reared it’s (ugly) head. But now she does, cos sometimes she doesn’t know if she’s on a period or not, so I guess the liners are a safety net for her.

Scoff not vipers, this could be all of us one day.

MrWolfknowsthetime · 07/11/2018 17:29

This thread is horrible to read. So many nasty comments about women having normal, healthy discharge. Would it be acceptable for those who need liners to turn round and make nasty comments to those who don't about having dried up old minges? No, didn't think so.

This. I hope some of you are proud of yourselves.

Minidollop · 07/11/2018 17:34

Umm...no you're not BU.

Bad for the environment, bad for your bits, bad for your wallet. Just wear clean knickers!

Loonoon · 07/11/2018 17:36

I’ve never felt the need and I am not manky.

BertrandRussell · 07/11/2018 17:42

As I said-there are some times and some women for whom they are a godsend. I wore them when I was menopausal because for about 6 months my periods were completely random. It is the idea that all women should wear them all the time or be a "manky minge" that I think should be challenged. Because that is definitely a narrative planted in us by the advertising industry.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 07/11/2018 17:44

I always do, but I've had four kids and my bladder is not at its best, so I only feel clean if I can change my pantyliner a few times a day.

Lipoedema · 07/11/2018 17:49

I would have thought the same as many in the 'what?, just change your knickers'

But I have vaginal atrophy and have to use a twice weekly pessary to keep everything 'down there' moist. The issue is the next day when my drawers are soaked from the moisture leaking. Wet knickers is really unpleasant, and actually makes me sore.

Since reading this thread I've looked at reusable panty liners, but they seem to have issues with movement. I use 2 a week max, I think the environment can cope with that

PandorasBag · 07/11/2018 17:51

At the risk of being indelicate who - apart from dogs - goes round smelling women's crotches?

I think for most of us ordinary body secretions are dealt with effectively by sanpro, a daily change of underwear and by showering/washing at the beginning or end of the day.

We are not generally exuding odours that are so foul that everyone will faint when we come into the room.

(It's more likely to be people without vaginas - blokes in fact - who are a bit whiffy.)

katseyes7 · 07/11/2018 17:58

l did when l was working, if l had a cough. Sadly, my pelvic floor is now slightly less bulldog clip-like than it once was. Now l'm at home all day l don't bother.

lazymare · 07/11/2018 17:59

Madness. The cost and the waste.

ConciseandNice · 07/11/2018 18:02

I’m perimenopausal I think (45) and my ovaries have gone nuclear and my vagina is constantly in a state of preparation for random passing penises. It’s excruciating and wet. Panty liners are now a must!

RedPanda2 · 07/11/2018 18:02

I have an acid vagina that bleaches pants. Fight me.

makingmammaries · 07/11/2018 18:03

There obviously are some marketing droids in the world, otherwise who would dare invent Femfresh? Anybody out there using that? (And why is there no freshener for unspeakable sweaty male crotches?) So it’s not that far out to suppose that some of the women using panty liners daily are doing so because they’ve been brainwashed.

DeadGood · 07/11/2018 18:09

No, that is what gussets are for.

Ask your friend why gussets exist, if not to add a layer of absorption. If “everyone” wore panty liners then women’s knickers would be one layer thickness all over, like men’s briefs.

Absolutely nothing wrong with doing what works for you, but your friend is a twit for shaming you.

Sammysees · 07/11/2018 18:13

Thank you all for sharing your views. I’ve learnt a lot from this thread. Mostly that I’m not a manky minge Grin
