There are x3 of us (teenage dd) . I’m not sure exactly how much we are spending as me and dh do bits and bobs separately.

For food shopping together with things like cleaning products etc you would buy in your normal shop, how much are you spending?

Probably about £80 per week. 2 adults, a pre-schooler and a weaning baby.

We try to eat healthy, but there’s a few treats sneak in plus £20 on fruit and veg this week and some specific baby snacks, rice cakes, avocado etc

shockedballoon · 09/11/2018 14:08

I honestly have never totted it up. But thinking now, probably around 120 a week for 2 adults, one 9yo DS and DCat (who's got a dodgy stomach and can only eat bloody expensive crap!). Could definitely spend less.

2 adults, 2 children - 1 in nappies about 150-200 a week. One biggish Ocado shop, meat topped up weekly at the butcher and a couple of small top ups mid week for things i forgot in the main shop.

This is so interesting.
I know ours is ridiculously high but we do only buy free range/outdoor reared meat and nice cheeses etc plus lots of fresh fish and other fresh food so I know how we manage to spend so much.

I imagine those that spend less buy little or no meat and are less fussy and eat more pasta. Sadly DH can’t eat pasta or much rice which makes meals pricey!
I have worked out that our average evening meal is £8, more like £25 on Sunday.

We also get through at least 6 bottles of wine a week so easily £50 or more plus a bottle of gin now and then with expensive tonic.

We also have very fussy housecats and use 20litres of Catsan a week which costs a fortune even bought in bulk online.

I’m going to try and be more ruthless though on the food buying and see if we can cut it down more.

Hedgehog80 · 09/11/2018 17:40

I worked out that ours is quite high due to specialist foods (free from pretty much everything and vegan) plus things like nappies, wipes, babyfood and cleaning products

Emma765 · 09/11/2018 17:40

@Megan2018 sometimes our meals work out at maybe £2pp, but others around £5pp, it's not often more than that. Is the £25 home made, and does it include wine?! We can go out for a roast here and the bill can be less than that!

You're right, fresh fish is so expensive and frozen just isn't the same unless you're making something like a fish pie.

I think if you have the salary to support spending as much as you do and you enjoy it, then unless you're wanting for something you should enjoy yourself!

Megan2018 · 09/11/2018 17:58

@Emma765

Last weeks roast was lamb, the joint was £22 then some veg (nothing flash-carrots, potatoes, leeks, parsnips, broccoli).

Then a pudding which was bought at £5 and ice cream, mint sauce and redcurrant jelly which was another £10 I think. Granted we had leftovers so did 2 meals with extra veg so not too bad. But yes it does cost more to cook a decent bit of meat at home than eating out sometimes.

A large corn fed chicken is £8-10 unless on offer. But does do us 2 meals so that’s not so bad!

We can afford it but I’d prefer more cash for other things. Easiest would be to drink less, but I’d rather not!

I am going to show DH this thread though as he refuses to acknowledge how much we spend. Might wake him up a bit.

Ours in between £45-£65 a week for 2 adults and 1 6yr old and includes lunches for all of us 3-4 days a week. We shop at Lidl.
