Just that :P

Seneca while we're on the subject - why do you call it "grilled cheese" when it's fried?!

SenecaFalls · 06/11/2018 01:31

Graphista Grilled cheese always means a sandwich, not really fried, at least not in the American sense of what fried means, but cooked on a griddle, and turned so that it is toasted on both sides and the cheese melts. Cheese toast, at least the way we make it, is a single slice of bread with cheese on top, cooked in the oven under the broiler.

In the US, grill means the heat source comes from the bottom, which is the reverse of the meaning in British English, I think. Broil in American English means that the heat source is coming from above.

in scandi countries bread meat and cheese is breakie

Rachelover40 · 06/11/2018 05:01

I'm sitting here fancying cheese on toast and the only bread I have is those crusty baguettes you part bake in the oven!

Oh yum.

worriesinthedance · 06/11/2018 05:57

Getting up early today to make cheese on toast for breakfast 😋😋😋

GirlFliesHome · 06/11/2018 06:04

It's going to be ham, cheese, bread and boiled eggs here. I have breakfast at 6 am, then rarely manage to grab lunch before 2 pm. That sounds like a decent breakfast to get me through!

Alfie190 · 06/11/2018 06:24

I am going to have a toasted cheese sandwich for breakfast in about an hour.

MamafromOz · 06/11/2018 08:20

Oh yum ! Thank you! I have been suffering from morning sickness and was struggling to think of what to eat this morning .....now I know! Grin

It's never NOT a good time to have cheese on toast! I have yoghurt and fruit today but I really want cheese now. I did have a cheese and ham toasted sandwich for lunch yesterday though. Mmm cheese!

BitOutOfPractice · 06/11/2018 08:52

Lots of Dutch people I know not only have a cheese sandwich for breakfast but they also dip it in their tea or coffee Shock

DarlingNikita · 06/11/2018 11:25

It's good, but not as good as a tuna melt. Breakfast of champions.

IrianOfW · 06/11/2018 11:26

Why not?

ethelfleda · 06/11/2018 11:29

Thanks to this thread I’m now going to make cheese on toast. Although technically, it’s brunch not breakfast. I’m very excited.

IrianOfW · 06/11/2018 11:39

Breakfast is the best time of day to be eating 'fattening' but nutritious food.

ToftyAC · 06/11/2018 11:43

Mmmm.... cheesy toast (or cheesy Staffordshire oatcakes). By ‘eck there’s a good start to the day!

ethelfleda · 06/11/2018 11:45

Tuna melt!! Just a beautiful thing. Especially if you use those tuna infusions - with chilli and garlic.

dontalltalkatonce · 06/11/2018 11:47

'I get quite angry at expressions like "unhealthy bread".
It's the type of thing undernourished people would love to have, FGS. It feeds you, it's not poisonous, so healthy.'

I do, too, because it's really narrow-minded and thick. It's food, not crack. Or 'a thin scrape'. FFS. It's food! And what Graphista said.

SweetheartNeckline · 06/11/2018 11:49

We usually have fruit and a toasted teacake but it doesn't have much protein. Cheese on toast would be better. Wish they'd have beans or egg on toast but the little freaks don't like it.

BirdyBedtime · 06/11/2018 11:58

Most posters on this thread are my kind of people.

I really don't like cereal at all and need protein in the mornings - I alternate cheese on toast, egg and ham sandwich, bacon medallions and brie/avocado sandwich (all with wholemeal bread) or bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese.

At the weekends I might have a sausage in a roll or scrambled eggs. Always with either a piece of fruit or glass of fruit juice/smoothie.

All food groups present and accounted for.

DD has stopped eating cereal and now has fruit and yogurt then a slice of toast or a potato scone, bacon and avocado. Much better for her I think.

I always wonder who all these MNers are who say, 'Oh, I eat a bowl of porridge and it keeps me full till noon'.

CreativeMumma · 06/11/2018 12:11

I'm going to suggest it to my kids for tomorrow!

yikesanotherbooboo · 06/11/2018 12:33

Cheese on toast is a regular breakfast for teenaged DS.
I ring the changes with, eggs of all description, left over pasta, sardines, tuna, tomatoes, marmite, mushrooms, avocado, bacon, smoked salmon ,toasted cheese and onion sandwich etc
Occasional crunchy nut cornflakes or weetabix but I struggle to believe that either of those are healthier.

DarlingNikita · 06/11/2018 13:45

Me too! My DP has muesli and yoghurt at about 9am and then doesn't have lunch until 1 or 2pm. I have toast with avocado and salmon pate or something like that, then I'm hungry again at 11.

kelper · 06/11/2018 13:55

You'd have heart failure OP if you could see some of the things we eat for breakfast here! The previous nights choice for dinner is a favourite with DS.
Never thought of cheese on toast though, might try that tomorrow :)
