My DD wanted to go trick or treating with a school friend. I don’t know the parent well but our daughters have been friends for over a year so I texted to ask if DD could join. I reveived this (edited) response. DD2 is my Year 6 child. I don’t wear make up myself and neither do either of my daighters generally, although DD2 is occasionally allowed gloss.

‘Yes, DD can go around with XX.... Face paints for the costume are fine but please no use of makeup (saw DD2 is using makeup already - we would appreciate no pressure from DD on that during primary school).’

hmm the update makes things a lot clearer. I reckon the other mum has seen the lip gloss and summarily added you to her 'chav' list and doesn't really want her kids to mix with yours at all. This is only an issue for you if you care about being left out of stuff by the kind of person who will consign you to the social scrap heap based on a one off sighting of lip gloss. My feeling is no great loss to you and yours, and steer well clear.

I think you were right to pull her up on it - and very brave, as most of us wouldn't and would silently seethe.

I feel that, the majority of the time, we should stick to our own parenting techniques. If we change because of someone else then we are confusing our child and saying, when such and such a parent is here, they are in charge and so we are teaching them not to respect our authority and saying to ourselves that our parenting isn't good enough.

Occasionally, I have told mine not to have Fanta, for example, because.so and so isn't allowed because it's the kind thing to do but less often now. Mostly, it has lead to mine kicking off and it is.more hassle than it's worth

I put a smiley on my post, but they're hibernating 😊
