Takes you back to a moment?

Mine is Barcelona by Freddie Mercury and Monsterrat Caballe

I was 6 when the Barcelona Olympics were on and I remember being stunned at how powerful this song was even at age 6. It made me stand and watch. When I hear it I still get goosebumps and can remember the moment I heard it.

Days - Kirsty MacColl

StarShimmer · 01/11/2018 21:41

Wonderful thread... So many great songs already mentioned. Somewhere Over The Rainbow. The version by Eva Cassidy ALWAYS leaves me in floods of tears. I believe she recorded it when she was fighting a battle with cancer that she subsequently lost. I believe you can hear it in her interpretation. That final minute gets me every time.

No-one has mentioned hallelujah yet. I love the Jeff Buckley version.

And Coyotes by Don Edwards always makes me shiver. As does Birdgerhl by Antoni and the Johnsons.

AllesAusLiebe · 01/11/2018 21:52

There is a light that never goes out by The Smiths. It was our first dance at our wedding.

Weird one - Trick of the Light by a band called Lonely the Brave. I heard this on the radio when it was released and i just love it. So well written and gives me a shiver every time.

Also anything on Springsteen’s Darkness on the Edge of Town because it reminds me of good friendships.

John Martyn - May You Never.

It takes me back to my youth and my first love. He died suddenly and tragically in his early 20s and I thought my heart would be forever broken. We went to lots of gigs together and saw John Martyn live many times, of which I’m glad.

When I heard Danny Baker announce John Martyn's death on the radio, I was driving and burst in to howling sobs driving over Hampton Court bridge. I still love his music today but this song is special.

@MyEyesAreNotDeceivingMe

I am a funeral Celebrant and will be bookmarking this page - there are some beautiful music choices here, some of which are new to me.

I think music is so important at ceremonies.

For me it’s more individual voices as opposed to the song.
Voices that make me tingle include Kerry Ellis, woman the band & Caro Emerald

7salmonswimming · 02/11/2018 00:02

For unspeakable reasons, Strange Fruit by Nina Simone.

The meaning of the lyrics, NS’s own life story, the historical context. It’s a perfect song to me, you understand why humans make music. Many songs do that, but for me Strange Fruit is inescapable.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 02/11/2018 00:03

On that thread can I ask you all to google Woman the Band ; Woman of the World play it LOUD on headphones and tell me it ain’t da bomb

To echo PPs:

Fast Car (have been obsessed with this lately for some reason)

Soft As Snow - My Bloody Valentine. (I feel like this is an unusual one!)

My own additions:

Something about what happens when we talk, Lucinda Williams:

Heart, All I want to do is make love to you (I have a very specific memory of listening to this in the car with my mother as a rather small child and her explaining the scandalous - to me - meaning)

Come Monday, Jimmy Buffett - reminds me of my father

I feel like this is a weird and highly specific list. Am slightly embarrassed..
