Takes you back to a moment?

Mine is Barcelona by Freddie Mercury and Monsterrat Caballe

I was 6 when the Barcelona Olympics were on and I remember being stunned at how powerful this song was even at age 6. It made me stand and watch. When I hear it I still get goosebumps and can remember the moment I heard it.

Lana Del Rey - Young and Beautiful

sharpstick · 01/11/2018 20:38

There are so so many. Usually songs from my pre teen and teenage years. But I can hear a song and be instantly transported back, right to the year, the month, I’m right in the moment.

I remember hearing Whitney Houston’s One Moment in Time as a child and it hitting me as powerful, even then. Around the same time I think I got the same feeling from Robin Becks’ The First Time, Phil Collins Groovy Kind of Love, and also the Pet Shop Boys’ Heart. I think there was some coming of age thing going on!

PavlovianLunge · 01/11/2018 20:38

Bridge Over Troubled Water. Pretty much all of it, but particularly when Art Garfunkel sings ‘and pain is all around’, and later ‘I’m sailing right behind’. So powerful, even after all these years.

M00nUnit · 01/11/2018 20:39

It's Quiet Uptown from Hamilton. Gorgeous song.

PavlovianLunge · 01/11/2018 20:40

And yes to One Moment In Time, though the line ‘I will be free’ seems so terribly poignant now.

namechangetheworld · 01/11/2018 20:42

I read the thread title and before clicking onto it, immediately thought of Barcelona. It gives me chills every time. The combination of their voices is absolutely stunning.

Coldilox · 01/11/2018 20:46

Against All Odds by Phil Collins

GrumpyOldMare · 01/11/2018 20:48

Seasons in the sun - Terry Jacks
The Living Years - Mike and the Mechanics
Time after Time - Cyndi Lauper
Forever Autumn - Jeff Wayne

MoonMaybe · 01/11/2018 20:49

There's a few that come to mind:

Defying Gravity from the soundtrack of Wicked the Musical - gives me shivers a brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it!

Purple Rain by Prince - I saw him live a few years ago and now every time I hear this song I instantly think of hearing it live and how breathtaking it was.

Somebody To Love by Queen - need I say more?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/11/2018 20:50

Through the Barricades - Spandau Ballet
Mandolin Wind - Rod Stewart
Morningside - Neil Diamond
The Rose - Bette Midler

Laura Mvula 'Overcome'. Dh bought me her album for xmas when he had cancer, it carries such emotion for me - I recall seeing her on Jools Holland with Dh and he was so poorly. Sad I don't cry at many songs but this one is strong!

If you ever saw a jogger going along, listening to her iPod and crying it might've been me!

kelper · 01/11/2018 20:50

Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits.
"Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die."

Those lines make me properly sob, and the version Mark Knopfler did on Radio 2 the other day was just stunning

ladybird69 · 01/11/2018 20:52

Freya Ridings Lost without you. Goosebumps followed swiftly by sobbing.

AliTheMinx · 01/11/2018 20:53

Kissing You by Des'ree - so powerful. It's on our wedding DVD and I cry every time.

When I lost my first baby I listened to some sad songs and now I just can't listen without crying:

Small Bump- Ed Sheeran
Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton
Fields of Gold - Eva Cassixy

papayya · 01/11/2018 20:53

Iris goto dolls
Kenny Rogers coward of the county takes me back to a holiday with my friend and her parents when I was 11

Angels takes me back to my wedding

James sit down takes me back to being 18 and clubbing with my best friends

Atetoomanyghoulies · 01/11/2018 20:58

The show must go on - Queen

AliTheMinx · 01/11/2018 20:59

Also Angel by Sarah McLachlan. I believe it's about drug abuse/dying alone. It was played at the funeral of a friend who died from cancer surrounded by loved ones, and it upset me knowing the back story of the song, because it didn't match her story. It's a very emotionally charged song.

I also find November Rain very emotive - especially the end part about knowing you need someone, and 'You're not the only one"...

This one.....

Photographs And Memories
Jim Croce

Photographs and memories
Christmas cards you sent to me
All that I have are these
To remember you
Memories that come at night
Take me to another time
Back to a happier day
When I called you mine
But we sure had a good time
When we started way back when
Morning walks and bedroom talks
Oh how I loved you then
Summer skies and lullabies
Nights we couldn't say good-bye
And of all of the things that we knew
Not a dream survived
Photographs and memories
All the love you3 gave to me
Somehow it just can't be true
That's all I've left of you
But we sure had a good time
When we started way back when
Morning walks and bedroom talks
Oh how I loved you then

GuiltyPleasure · 01/11/2018 21:00

Fairytale of New York, especially the bit about the NYPD choir always gives me goosebumps.
Against All Odds - was on the radio all the time at the time of the sudden death of my first love when I was 17
Parklife by Blur.. I was listening to radio 1 when they cut in to the end of the song to announce the death of then Labour leader John Smith. I wasn't particularly political at that time, but I was struck by immense sadness & that song always takes me back to the moment
ELO - Mr Blue Sky. My SEN son loves this & it makes me so happy to hear him sing along, even for the millionth time on repeat

sharpstick · 01/11/2018 21:02

Oh yes, Love Song for a Vampire is beautiful. Even as a hard faced 15 year old I appreciated it’s emotion

ForalltheSaints · 01/11/2018 21:06
