Help! Need your recommendations for a really good hot chocolate i can make at home. Feeling especially cold & miserable and am always really underwhelmed with usual supermarket offerings (options & highlights etc) I'm going to walk to my village and grab necessities when the baby wakes and would love your suggestions of how you make / what you use for a top hot choc! Xx

Years ago I melted down a bar of chocolate (cadburys dairy milk) in a bowl over hot water and then whisked in some hot milk and it was ACTUAL HEAVEN.

Treaclepie19 · 31/10/2018 11:51

I always have Cadbury hot chocolate made just with milk which is nice... but still not amazing.

WhatelsecouldIbecalled · 31/10/2018 11:52

Hotel chocolate hot chocolate. It’s actual chocolate shavings that melt down. Especially the salted caramel one. Steep at £9 a tub but worth every single penny. Yummy!

Buy one you make with milk. Put more of the powder than it advises.
Cream and a flake. With a little extra powder sprinkled on top.

m00rfarm · 31/10/2018 11:54

I love the galaxy one but make it all with milk - three good spoonfuls of galaxy powder and then hot milk - mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Sitranced · 31/10/2018 11:57

Get an actual bar of chocolate (whichever is your fave) and melt it slowly over a low heat with milk.

Woohoo1 · 31/10/2018 11:58

I warm up chocolate milk!! Very smooth and rich

MrsStrowman · 31/10/2018 12:00

Thornton's, hotel Chocolat, essentially you want a good quality one made with chocolate flakes/curls rather than powder, then make it with milk

ifyoulikepinacolada · 31/10/2018 12:02

Charbonnel et walker made with milk! Yum.

MrDonut · 31/10/2018 12:05

My favourite is Swiss Miss. I make it with hot water and a bit of milk, top with whipped cream and drizzle with chocolate syrup. It's so good!

Babybearsporij · 31/10/2018 12:06

I saw something in Tk Maxx recently which was chocolate chips that you melted into milk.

If you want powder, I've found the Wispa bubbly hot chocolate made with all milk very nice.

AwdBovril · 31/10/2018 12:09

I've given up with hot chocolate. I drink proper cocoa now, if I have it at all. The majority of chocolate powders are hideously over sweetened & taste of nasty chemicals these days. The only one that's even vaguely passable is the Green & Blacks.

Brainfogmcfogface · 31/10/2018 12:09

Froth is your friend! I froth up the milk and add a few chunks of chocolate in mine, add cream too, makes it thick, creamy and delicious.. god I want one! Bloody gestational diabetes grrrr!

The darkest chocolate you can find, grated and melted into milk on the hob in a pan, add some double cream - I like it 1 part cream 3 parts blue cap milk.

Very calorific so only a very occasional treat but we all need some indulgence sometimes. Add some squirty cream, a small grating of the chocolate and some marshmallows on top (if you are veggie then the mini ones in Holland and Barrett are brilliant)

Heaven in a mug

AgnesBrownsCat · 31/10/2018 12:14

Warm some milk and melt your favourite chocolate into it .

Thebluedog · 31/10/2018 12:15

I buy the Cadbury ones, stir in some milk and add mini marshmallows, makes all the difference

GoldenBuns · 31/10/2018 12:19

Yes - definitely melt chocolate into your milk while you are heating it up. I use 4-5 squares of dark chilli chocolate. I find that melting milk chocolate into milk is too sickly. You can alway add a slug of brandy if you want some extra oomph!

That, or proper Bournville cocoa, but I need sugar with that.

Bombaybunty · 31/10/2018 12:20

Fortnum and Mason do various fancy hot chocolates that are lovely.

kaytee87 · 31/10/2018 12:21

I buy 100% cocoa, sweeten with sugar and make with milk

StableGenius · 31/10/2018 12:23

Like you I am usually a bit disappointed with hot chocolate.

I've had truly satisfactory hot chocolate 3 times. Once in a cafe in Barcelona, but a long time ago so I don't have further details.

At a National Trust property where they did the melting a bar of chocolate into the cup thing - perfect. But I can't remember what brand of chocolate they were using (maybe their own from the gift shop).

In Paris last week - it was Valrhona: www.valrhona-chocolate.com/shop

Witchofzog · 31/10/2018 12:26

Wetherspoons do unlimited coffee and hot milk. We sometimes bring a bar of dairy milk etc and stir it into the hot milk. It's gorgeous! You can recreate this at home obviously

Potterpotty · 31/10/2018 12:30

Warm up vanilla milkshake and add Cadburys hot chocolate, it's yummy

senua · 31/10/2018 12:32

An old recipe picked up from the National Trust:
1½ tbsp cocoa
1½ tbsp sugar
½ tsp cinnamon
â…› tsp cloves
â…› tsp star anise
â…› tsp cayenne pepper

make up with half water / half milk.
It's very nice.Smile
