Help! Need your recommendations for a really good hot chocolate i can make at home. Feeling especially cold & miserable and am always really underwhelmed with usual supermarket offerings (options & highlights etc) I'm going to walk to my village and grab necessities when the baby wakes and would love your suggestions of how you make / what you use for a top hot choc! Xx

Whittards have a brilliant selection and I love hotel chocolat too.

Lululemonade · 31/10/2018 18:20

The Spanish one someone linked to from Amazon is good, but v rich.
There is a good taste the difference one at Sainsbury’s but my very favourite (I always ask for a tin for Christmas rather than buy as super expensive) is fortnum and mason

Lululemonade · 31/10/2018 18:21

And when you make it always mix a small amount with the hot milk to make a paste before adding the rest of the milk to ensure it is all mixed in

Yonijust · 31/10/2018 18:23

Melt mini marshmallows in with the milk.

I always find my usual brand a bit pallid so this thread is a lifesaver!

covetingthepreciousthings · 31/10/2018 18:24

Another vote for Hotel Chocolat, the salted caramel one is divine.

RusholmeRuffian · 31/10/2018 19:05

Crush up a bag of Maltesers, stir into hot milk. Sorted.

Puppatude · 31/10/2018 19:36

Clipper do a really good hot chocolate. It claims to be velvety, and is!

hotchocdrinker · 31/10/2018 19:54

As my username would suggest I love hot chocolate, and have tried many. My favourite is the Charbonnel and Walker mentioned about. It used to be quite difficult to find, but you can get it in Sainsburys and Waitrose. Make it with milk rather than water. Yummy!

nefali · 01/11/2018 00:18

Omg I love this thread. I feel poor now with my Tesco's own brand powder.

TooManyPaws · 01/11/2018 00:23

And amaretto is lovely in hot chocolate, as is Baileys.

pandarific · 01/11/2018 00:27

Another one for using just powdered cocoa, milk and sugar - lovely and chocolatey.

LesAnya · 01/11/2018 00:28

Green and blacks is lovely. I treated myself to the Hotel Chocolat one which is also v nice but G&B was 1/3 of the price! Look for one with the first ingredient as cocoa. As an aside, oat milk is good in hot chocolate Smile

nocoolnamesleft · 01/11/2018 00:47

Nut milks (almond, hazelnut) also make good hot chocolate...

TeddyIsaHe · 01/11/2018 00:51

Willie’s Cacao blocks grated, warm slowly with whole milk, sweeten to taste with soft brown sugar. It’s ridiculous how nice it is.

Reallylongstory1 · 01/11/2018 01:00

Another vote for Green & Blacks or if I run out cocoa powder with sugar & milk. Can’t go back to normal hot chocolate anymore.

This recipe from Pierre Hermè via Dorie Greenspan.

Frothing up milk, heating it in the microwave then adding bournville, sugar and I tiny bit of salt has been my favourite for a while.

Bit hard to give instructions to DP other people as I just do it by eye/taste, think I'll make up a jar of it soon so it can just be added to frothed milk.

MaggieAndHopey · 01/11/2018 05:06

I do two heaped teaspoons of Cadbury's drinking chocolate, one heaped teaspoon of cocoa powder, full fat milk (because I only ever use full fat milk for anything) Just right for me.

borntobequiet · 01/11/2018 05:12

Cocoa powder, made with milk and sweetened to taste in the old fashioned way beats any drinking chocolate hands down. But I’m old and probably too set in my ways.

borntobequiet · 01/11/2018 05:16

But I have to admit using the not so traditional microwave rather than a saucepan.

NooNooHead · 01/11/2018 05:40

Cacao powder with a very tiny amount of sugar if you want it slightly sweeter. It’s lovely and much better for you - full of antioxidants etc. Can’t stand all the stuff like Cadbury’s etc now since have pure cocoa!

NooNooHead · 01/11/2018 05:40

squiglet111 · 01/11/2018 05:46

Honestly, the best hot chocolate is made with real chocolate. You don't even need to fraff with melting on stove. Just poor a mug of milk and stick your chocolate in it (galaxy is my preferance) then microwave for 2-3mins. Stir and job done!

scissorspaperrock · 01/11/2018 05:56

At home, I really like hot chocolate made with Vittoria Chocochino Drinking Chocolate. Yummmmm!
