Help! Need your recommendations for a really good hot chocolate i can make at home. Feeling especially cold & miserable and am always really underwhelmed with usual supermarket offerings (options & highlights etc) I'm going to walk to my village and grab necessities when the baby wakes and would love your suggestions of how you make / what you use for a top hot choc! Xx

M & S do a nice hot chocolate, same as what is sold in their cafe

TheViceOfReason · 31/10/2018 12:52

Nesquik - mix a couple of spoons of powder into a little cold milk to fully dissolve, then top up with cold milk. Then microwave.

Whittards praline white hot chocolate - stir into hot milk.

I like mint options too - made up with 3/4 water to 1/4 milk and double the quantity of powder.

Finally - any chocolate powder, made up with hot water, then stir in either a spoon of nutella or a spoon of salted caramel and a slug of double cream.

If you have a "Paul's" bakery near you, they do hot chocolate which is like exactly drinking thick liquid chocolate.
Recommend highly !

I don’t think you can go wrong with whittards! I’ve got a slim kitchen cupboard dedicated to the stuff now as everyone buys me the big tubs for birthdays and Christmas.

Every Christmas/New Years Eve I make us all a big mug full of hot chocolate with half milk half cream marshmallows whipped cream and flake on top! We make a big song and dance of the DC’s picking which flavour they want. Can’t beat it!

vintagechick43 · 31/10/2018 12:59

I've tried every hot chocolate going, Twinnings is definitely my favourite.

Stormwhale · 31/10/2018 13:02

Nutella and hot milk. Oh yes.

WickedGoodDoge · 31/10/2018 13:05

Melt 3-4 Lindt d’Ors in hot milk. Best hot chocolate I have ever had. Flavoured hot chocolate too if you want!

Anyakatemar · 31/10/2018 13:12

This sold at M&S and is AMAZING made in the saucepan.

You can transform any hot chocolate if you whisk it up with one of those mini electric whisks (like Aerolatte, but non-branded ones seem to be just a few pounds).

TeddybearBaby · 31/10/2018 13:14

I bought an Oreo one yesterday 😋

Melting chocolate with milk seems to be the favourite - off to the supermarket now! Thanks for the inspiration - my poor waistline!!

Green and blacks cocoa powder, made with milk, add sugar to taste, plus squirty cream and marshmallows if that's what you like.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 31/10/2018 13:26

I just do cocoa, sugar and blue milk. Tastes great and no faffing.

dustarr73 · 31/10/2018 13:31

Butlers hot chocolate is fab.Add cream and a flake

SpamChaudFroid · 31/10/2018 13:34

I like it made with cacao, blue milk and a big dash of double cream. Add a teeny pinch of salt to it, will bring out flavour. If any rum or brandy in the house add that if you're feeling decadent.

HariboLecter · 31/10/2018 13:35

The Twinings one, I stock up when it's on offer in Lidl or Aldi

clary · 31/10/2018 13:36

Had amazing hot choc at local cafe this week, it's also a posh choc shop and they pour hot milk on top quality chocolate!

Nigella, does it too, see Feast

butterry · 31/10/2018 13:37

Definitely grated chocolate rather than the powder, made with milk and some double cream to make it extra luxurious! I also love marshmallows on top to melt and create that luscious foam

anniehm · 31/10/2018 17:26

Unsweetened Cocoa, hot milk, sugar to taste. Make strong in a pan, you can add milk later if too chocolatey. Beats any instant drink and so easy (can also make in a mug in microwave but the gentle heat on the stove means you can control it)

glueandstick · 31/10/2018 17:32

Whittards peanut one. With blue milk. Oh yes!

MamaLovesMango · 31/10/2018 17:35

The Sweet Freedom syrup in hot milk is my favourite so far!

Rapunzelrella · 31/10/2018 17:35

Another vote for pure cocoa powder here, but that's because I don't like the sweetness of the drinking chocolate powders. I microwave a mug of milk and then add straight cocoa powder slowly and stir well.

PhilODox · 31/10/2018 17:38

I do Green and Black's and add a bit of bournville cocoa at the end.

SilverySurfer · 31/10/2018 17:39

My favourite is by Charbonnel et Walker. It's like grated chocolate and yummy.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 31/10/2018 17:39

I'm really old fashioned and make my own! For the absolute best -

Put some sugar in a small amount of water and heat (in pan or microwave). When sugar dissolved you can add dark chocolate broken down into chunks. If doesn't fully melt then gently heat.

This stage gives you a chocolatey paste that you can keep in the fridge and then just spoon put bits at a time if you have it regularly.

Top up with milk and cream depending on how rich you want it, and warm through. Add a pinh of cinnamon

Sounds like it takes ages actually just a few minutes and so much nicer than powder it is definitely worth it
