AIBU to find this an odd thing to state on a menu?

I went to restaurant with a friend the other day. We were looking at the menu and two of the pasta dishes had the subheading 'The Ladies' choice(Creamy chicken and mushroom pasta) and The Gentleman's choice(Pasta in spicy tomato sauce with strips of steak and sliced chillis)

I found this so incredibly weird and also rather offensive. I was tempted to order the gent's pasta just to see if the staff would keel over in horror(I know that they didn't write the menu.)

The only other time I've encountered in person the whole concept of food intended for women and for men was at a wedding when one guest decided that the man next to her was being emasculated because he ordered the lemon cheesecake and not the chocolate fudge cake(which his wife ordered) and tried to convince them to swap as she was sure that being a man he really wanted chocolate cake and was being deprived. It was bizarre.

Has anyone else encountered this?

I drink espresso, DH Cappucino, we always get given each others coffees! If he's driving we order a pint and a half of beer, sometimes his half comes in a "ladies" glass Angry

DoItForTheDucks · 31/10/2018 11:55

Take a mini harpoon for the next wedding you attend, Rousette, just in case it happens again then you can spear your DH's dinner from any distance. WTF were the caterers thinking?

When we go on holiday, my husband likes the cocktails with Malibu, pineapple and cream in them as he has quite a sweet tooth and we wouldn't dream of making them at home, (he's not so keen on the little paper brollies etc that usually accompany them though, haha) and I like Jack Daniels. You can guess which way round the drinks are given...

Mamadothehump · 31/10/2018 12:00

If we eat in a curry house, more often than not I'll order a vindaloo and DH a tikka masala. They generally assume the vindaloo is for DH. One waiter went as far as making a big deal about bringing me tissues to have close by, clearly not thinking I was "man" enough to handle the heat. When he cleared our (empty) plates away, he asked if we enjoyed it. I replied that it was ok but I would be asking for it hotter next time!!!

Unless it's eaten through the vagina or has to have a penis dipped in it (socially unacceptable usually) then I can't think of a reason why the names

How bizarre. Not a food story but we ordered drinks before a meal. When they came, the pint was put in front of DP and I got the vodka. We quickly swapped.

charge282 · 31/10/2018 12:07

Several times.

I live near a major Premiership football stadium. The burger van had for a long time “Ladies’ Burger” (one patty) and “Men’s Burger” (two patties).

Have also been in pubs, bars etc with a friend and it’s happened with drinks. The server will give the pint we ordered to the man and the glass of white wine to the woman. We will then roll our eyes and swap.

AdaColeman · 31/10/2018 12:08

I've been in restaurants that have had menus without prices for the lady, though that was a few years ago. Ladies glasses (half pint) used to be common in the pubs too, though not so much now!

RB68 · 31/10/2018 12:10

the no price menus go to those that didn't book the table or used to - so there was a host and guests but of course the host was always the husband rather than the wife so I can see how that arose

MorrisZapp · 31/10/2018 12:11

Must admit I do like a chalice style glass if it's on offer.

ProfYaffle · 31/10/2018 12:11

I've noticed the gendered assumptions around food a lot. Weirdly, if I order mussels, they're always assumed to be for dh Confused

MrsStrowman · 31/10/2018 12:12

This is outrageous, the attitude is common though. I was out for dinner with colleagues the week before last, the person who brought the drinks wasn't the one who took the order, there were four of us, two pints of ale, a fruity alcoholic cocktail (pink in colour) and a sparkling water. The pints were put in front of my two older male colleagues, then I saw the confusion on the waitress's face, looking at me (huge pregnancy bump) the cocktail and the water. She gave ME the cocktail as obviously it couldn't possibly have been for my other male colleague seeing as it was pink...

Alwaysawomantome · 31/10/2018 12:21

Many times we have gone out for dinner and my husband has ordered lasagne and I've gone for stake, they always assume the steak is his

user23334444 · 31/10/2018 12:25

This is what we'd order as a couple, but then DH loves spice and my acid reflux can't handle it!

Athena51 · 31/10/2018 12:26

I remember being out for dinner with Ex-h once and I ordered red wine and he ordered rose which was given to me as clearly a man wouldn't drink something as feminine as rose wine Grin

Lightsong · 31/10/2018 12:27

Every time we go for coffee DH always gets given my black coffee and I get his latte, in the UK and on holiday abroad

Troika · 31/10/2018 12:30

I went for afternoon tea here

Not only are they stupidly named but the portion size difference was ridiculous.

EmUntitled · 31/10/2018 12:30

How bizzarre, obviously only men like steak Hmm

I went to a pub recently and one of the meals was a "Brexit Burger" priced at £11 (or €25) - that's what it actually said on the menu. I don't know who thought up that hilarious one.

I thought the burger itself sounded nice actually but refused to order it on principle!

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 31/10/2018 12:31

Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things? You people seem to want to discard every last shred of the difference between men and women. I LIKE being treated as a lady, not some pseudo-man.

EmUntitled · 31/10/2018 12:32

@Troika why dont they just call it a savoury afternoon tea? What is so masculine about scotch eggs?

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/10/2018 12:35

MilkTray

So you don't mind men being given more food, solely because they are men?

Or waiters assuming that you should or shouldn't eat or drink certain things, because you are a woman?

There's nothing masculine about steak, scotch eggs or red wine just like there's nothing lady like about chicken, fish or cake Confused.

anniehm · 31/10/2018 12:38

Seems very odd to me, I certainly prefer spicy tomato myself!

strawberrisc · 31/10/2018 12:40

@DoItForTheDucks

I didn't say you were. I was referring to my daughter, the marketeers dream.

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/10/2018 12:40

But could your delicate lady mouth handle the steak annie?

M3lon · 31/10/2018 12:42

milk so the rest of us should put up with be shoved into a mould that neither fits us nor suits us in any way just so you get to be 'treated like a lady'?

Fuck off with that.
