I am starting a graduate job in January. I don't normally wear makeup. Am I sabotaging myself if I do not wear makeup?

Or should I wear makeup?

It is a corporate job.

Gabilan there was really no need for that. Hmm

Scarymovie73 · 01/11/2018 22:57

TWEEZ I’m with you. I like putting makeup on, it doesn’t make me less intellectual, ineffectual or weak to anyone. Itskes me feel good , strong so why is this even an issue . Women have come so far that this isn’t even an issue anymore.

Scarymovie73 · 01/11/2018 22:59

Makes not itskes, damn iPhone SE amd my sausage fingers

Athena51 · 01/11/2018 23:10

@Scarymovie73 They can prise my make up bag out of my cold, dead hand Grin

Scarymovie73 · 01/11/2018 23:16

😘Athena51 oh yass, I’m going to my grave with a little colour too😂

Titsywoo · 01/11/2018 23:18

I never wear makeup to work. I do wear it for nights out but that's it. I just don't see the point. I'm happy with my face as it is and although makeup is fun it's not a necessity. I never understand women who say they can't go out without it. Why not? My skin is better for not wearing it then having to rub it off everyday.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 01/11/2018 23:21

I chose to wear make up frequently. I want to,I like it.its for me,it makes me happy
My three items I always have close to hand.lipstick, handbag, coffee

Scarymovie73 · 01/11/2018 23:35

The only 3 things you need in life👍🏼😉

JanetLovesJason · 01/11/2018 23:44

I think make-up is a lovely thing as joyous self-expression.

As an instrument of double-standard conformity, not so much.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 01/11/2018 23:47

I agree💄👜☕️ And 💳 all my essentials

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 02/11/2018 00:00

Mots you are more than acceptable just as you are, as a normal person. You look alive because you are alive!
Wear makeup because you enjoy it and it makes you happy, not because you’re worried what other people will think of you if you don’t, and you feel pressured to compensate for your perceived flaws.
Make up is a hobby, an art, an indulgence, a bonus, a perk, NOT a necessity.

purplebunny2012 · 02/11/2018 00:03

YANBU. I do not wear make-up and have never worn it to work

purplebunny2012 · 02/11/2018 00:24

Nice to look nice though, innit?

Scotty, you may not look nice without make-up, but I look just fine. You clearly get your ideas for the last century, you outdated moron

purplebunny2012 · 02/11/2018 00:24

From, not for!

angelfacecuti75 · 02/11/2018 01:52

No you don't need to wear ut

countrygirl99 · 02/11/2018 07:05

Another senior professional here who doesn't wear make up. I can't stand the feel of it, makes me feel grubby. I've know people on 7 figure salaries (not me, sadly) who don't either and it's clearly not held them back.

emmskie03 · 02/11/2018 07:15

You should only wear make up if you want to. This whole "it looks more profesional" stuff is rubbish. Certainly within my area of work senior female members of staff wear either no make up or do for a very subtle no make up look.

Just being you and have the courage of your convictions will further your career far more greatly than slapping on some bb cream.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/11/2018 07:19

"Most men don’t use make up 🤷🏻‍♀️ So I’m not sure the argument ‘would a man have to use make up to look professional’ is a good one."

I think it's a fair argument. The reason why most men don't wear makeup is cultural and social, not biological. It's not like arguing that you shouldn't have to wear a bra because men don't.

giveitfive · 02/11/2018 07:21

Pah. I don't wear make up. I sit on the board of four organisations and show my professionalism with my actions, not my lip gloss or outfits...

None of my male colleagues feel the need to enhance their professional appearance with mascara so why should I?

Member341379 · 02/11/2018 07:21

I never wear makeup to work. 45 now. Getting on fine in a professional environment. I feel uncomfortable wearing makeup. I can feel it on my skin and i hate it. Occasionally wesr it out (4 or 5 times a year). People comment on how good my skin looks which i think is partially down to no make up. I also drink lots of water and no tea/coffee. I would feel very self conscious wearing it.

OhTheRoses · 02/11/2018 07:25

No, you don't have to wear make-up but youbdo need to be:

Clean with neat hair
Well groomed - well fitting and ironed clothes
Well polished shoes

Apart from that I have always found cheerfulness and a willingness to please to be greatest accelerators up the greasy pole.

Tweez · 02/11/2018 08:02

Scarymovie73. I’m with you too Smile .and in response to one of your earlier posts, yes this is a daft thread.

Middersweekly · 02/11/2018 08:16

No you definitely do not have to wear make-up OP. If I could do without wearing it I would because I hate wearing it! Alas I look like the walking dead unless I slap on a bit of foundation and some concealer lol!

haloumi · 02/11/2018 08:21

I work in a professional environment with Many, Many management roles being ladies.

Some wear make up, some don't ..... Believe me, if you've got the skills and the talent, you can come to work in a sack and you'll command the respect you deserve.

The middling, not quiet, aspirationals are the ones that have to fall back on the "image" ....

Gabilan · 02/11/2018 08:42

It’s what womohave dine for centuries do why should we change , Michelle Obama wore lipstick so I’ll wear it too

Women didn't have the vote for centuries. They didn't wear trousers in some cultures for centuries. "We've done it for ages" isn't a good reason to continue with it.

Gabilan there was really no need for that

Care to elaborate, Tweez? In my last post prior to this one I said the decision to wear makeup should be down to the individual and women should not be perceived as unprofessional for not wearing makeup. Which part did you think there was no need for? Is there a reason you're trying to shut down debate?
