Preparing for a flaming here but it has to be said. Is it just me or are the contestants on GBBO become more emotional each year? A little bit of criticism from Paul and Prue and it looks like they're gonna have a melt down. I get it's a competition and you want to win of course but it's really not that serious. It's bleeding baking for Christ sake. They're acting rather childish imo. Thoughts?

You forget the power of tv editing.

Oysterbabe · 31/10/2018 00:09

I agree it was a disappointing final. All the show stoppers looked shit.

TSSDNCOP · 31/10/2018 05:10

Rahul was the better baker ad deserved to win. He was given extra time as his bench had to be cleared of broken glass and he had to re-start.

But the show is about baking. A skill that just doesn’t need all the back-stories to be interesting.

Santaclarita · 31/10/2018 05:54

Noeuf

Seriously? It's pretty obvious that they would be talking about the winner. I haven't watched it yet and still came on here, mainly to find out who won. In future, maybe don't read threads on programmes that you're watching and instead, watch the programme?

Anyway haven't watched it, but kind of knew Rahul would win. He had been consistently good through the start and middle. His last few weeks weren't great, but think that's more because he doesn't bake those types of food. If you only have a week for practice, of course you're gonna suck. Ruby was lucky to survive considering her first few weeks where she struggled to bake a simple cake. Kim joy wasn't bad, but just not as good as Rahul.

BigGreenOlives · 31/10/2018 06:11

I don’t see the point of people making cakes & biscuits you can’t actually eat, the final’s showstoppers didn’t work as food.

Elderflower14 · 31/10/2018 06:18

This was the first year that I have not cared who won.
I thought Prue was a bitch when Rahul's glass jar exploded. I think I would have jumped out of my skin if that happened to me!!!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 31/10/2018 07:15

I also think over the course of the show, Rahul was the most consistent, it was only the last couple of weeks he did comparatively poorly. However! Kim Joy upped her game a lot later in the show. Her show stopper was her undoing. Although none of those show stoppers wowed me. I had no issue with Rahul getting extra time. The clock effectively stopped when the glass shattered and he had to restart- he had nothing to show for the time he'd had!

PiperPublickOccurrences · 31/10/2018 07:26

The problem is that they're running out of things for them to bake. In the early series, they would be asked to make a gingerbread house, or 24 identical cookies. But that's not enough any more, it has to be something new and different - and even better if the contestants have no idea what it is.

My favourite series was the one that John the law student won, even though I think James the medical student and his Fair Isle jumpers were robbed. Also really liked Nancy - in the final that year I think they were asked for a technical to make something like 6 scones, a victoria sponge and a chocolate tart. Without a recipe. That's PROPER baking.

longwayoff · 31/10/2018 07:29

Dont care about contestants heritage but do care that the producers have ballsed up one of the few tv programmes that was wildly popular because of the format. I can't find one photo on the net of the winning creation. Dreadful, looked like plasticine on its way to the bin.Angry

Biancadelriosback · 31/10/2018 07:38

If you think this lot are emotional, how about the guy (season 4 maybe) who threw his whole baked Alaska in the bin during the show stopper and walked up carrying nothing to Paul and Mary?

Biancadelriosback · 31/10/2018 07:38

He practically flounced!

Biancadelriosback · 31/10/2018 07:42

I think as well, channel 4 needs to be "out there" doesn't it. On BBC they could happily have a show where people baked quite normal cakes, maybe throw on a mirror glaze or make the cake look like something else etc. Channel 4 needs them to bake 39 identical cakes in 5 minutes while performing a trapeze act.

I'd love to see Paul and Pru baking in real time during the technical. I don't for one second believe they create the cake we see them scranning.

DaffydownClock · 31/10/2018 07:45

It's turned into the Paul Hollywood show and clearly he favoured Rahul from the start.
I won't be watching any future shows if he's on it. His overinflated ego is nauseating.

Miscible · 31/10/2018 07:48

I really think someone should have told Kim Joy at an early stage that she needed to think beyond being twee all the time.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 31/10/2018 08:00

I don’t think Rahul’s buttercream roses were any less twee, tbh, and terribly out of place.

Buttercream rose on a doughnut? Why?

pippa999 · 31/10/2018 08:01

@Miscible*

I really think someone should have told Kim Joy at an early stage that she needed to think beyond being twee all the time.

Or maybe someone should tell her to carry on being her quirky, eccentric self, and to hell with what anyone else thinks! Why should she change who she is for you, or anyone else?

Better Kim-Joy's 'tweeness' than Rahuls' miserable sour face, and his sighing, and huffing and puffing, when things aren't going his way.

Worst winner ever IMO.

Kim-Joy was robbed.

pippa999 · 31/10/2018 08:05

Funny also, how when Rahul's doughnuts were crammed with filling -they were 'nice and full!' But when Kim-Joys' were, they were TOO FULL of filling! Hmm

Blatant favouritism towards Rahul from the start - as many posters have said.

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 31/10/2018 08:07

I could weep, channel 4 have destroyed a great show. Load of tosh that showstopper was.

Bianca that rings bells, a proper sling and flounce.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 31/10/2018 08:09

All the show stoppers looked shit.

Pretty much this.

Anyway, the show seems to be moving away from baking and is now a personality contest for people looking to launch media careers. Does not really matter if you win the show, so long as you get to the final and come across well in front of the camera you will probably pick up a book deal, newspaper column or a travel/cooking show. Ruby will probably get the latter.

Miscible · 31/10/2018 08:09

Kim Joy doesn't have to change for me - what a strange thing to say, @pippa999. But this is a programme where the judges advise people every week on how they should change what they do in terms of baking. There's a bit of an obvious difference between commenting on someone's baking style and commenting on their personal characteristics. If you don't understand that, you are sort of missing the point of the programme.

jay55 · 31/10/2018 08:12

It wasn’t bake off this year it was X factor with a bit of cooking.

longwayoff · 31/10/2018 08:12

Bianca that's a great idea. If they're going to change the format let's have smug Prue and smugger Paul doing as you suggest against the clock.

Urbanbeetler · 31/10/2018 08:14

If a few of them write books, I’d buy Kim Joy’s rather than anyone else’s because I thought she was the most original.

I agree the challenges are silly now.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 31/10/2018 08:20

I agree the challenges are silly now.

They are crap. I prefer the original, more simple tasks, most viewers could relate to them insofar as they have all at one point tried to bake a cake, it was just that the contestants generally did it with greater skill with some stunning end results even though it was 'just a chocolate cake'

The show stoppers of late just look inedible.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 31/10/2018 08:22

At least Prue didn't fuck it up this year by tweeting the name of the winner.
