Preparing for a flaming here but it has to be said. Is it just me or are the contestants on GBBO become more emotional each year? A little bit of criticism from Paul and Prue and it looks like they're gonna have a melt down. I get it's a competition and you want to win of course but it's really not that serious. It's bleeding baking for Christ sake. They're acting rather childish imo. Thoughts?

@TSSDNCOP

'This was the shittest final ever IMO.' < this is so true.

Not a single thing that looked edible, well-made or tempting to actually eat!

As for the 'lets burn bread over a camp fire' task. WTF - it was probably one of those 30 degree days in the summer. I was actually getting cross watching it. They were all rubbish but it was a ridiculous task for a home baking competition.

LokiBear · 30/10/2018 22:01

I really hate that it is labelled as 'tokenism' or 'PC' because some of the contestants were non-white and/or gay and one had a disability. Unless you are on the panel who interviews candidates you have no idea if this is the case at all. We Brits are a diverse mix. Hardly surprising that our diversity is represented.

ProfessorMoody · 30/10/2018 22:01

A spoiler alert? The Bake off final is finished - why on earth would you click on a thread about the GBBO if you didn't want to see spoilers? Confused

Staringcoat · 30/10/2018 22:01

I dislike the "emotional" I'm baking to be my best self/for my one-legged grandmother/to go on a journey aspects of the show but I think that's mainly down to editing.

I think the contestants themselves did well not to faint in that heat frankly.

QueenDoris · 30/10/2018 22:02

Boloocks to the lot of you. It’s so much better than when it was on BBC. Sandy, Noel and Pru much better than the other lot. And what’s wrong with the contestants showing a bit of emotion?

And Rahul was great.

pippa999 · 30/10/2018 22:02

Very disappointed in the winner. He was miserable, unmotivated, and the weakest one IMO.

Obviously a fix.

Kim-Joy should have won.

TSSDNCOP · 30/10/2018 22:03

The diversity isn’t the issue.

The shitness is the issue.

Also, why read a GBBO thread when you’re half way through the final? I’m so over people reading stuff online whilst watching on delay and moaning that the rest of us are discussing what happened

legolammb · 30/10/2018 22:04

Totally agree LokiBear - very sad when non-white/non-heterosexual people are accused of only succeeding to tick boxes. This is a diverse country with different people and different experiences - why shouldn't a show reflect that? As someone with a non-British granny who was a phenomenal baker, I find it interesting to see how people bring their own backgrounds to GBBO.

pippa999 · 30/10/2018 22:04

YABU for calling people snowflakes for getting emotional though.

And rude to boot!

SouthWestmom · 30/10/2018 22:06

Because it's the same day and loads of people don't watch in real time. It's not that crazy.

buckingfrolicks · 30/10/2018 22:06

Rahul was so much the best Baker from week one that they had to try and pretend not to notice.

Athena51 · 30/10/2018 22:06

I think they make them do too much in too short a time. The final showstoppers used to be things like a beautiful three-tier wedding cake or a lovely afternoon tea. I'd rather watch that to be honest.

TeenTimesTwo · 30/10/2018 22:08

DD2 and I both called the winner. Going into the final we wanted someone else, but are happy that the best person won on the day.

Surely 'snowflake' is all about not being able to cope with tough challenges and not standing by their own decisions? They were the very opposite of snowflake!

TSSDNCOP · 30/10/2018 22:09

Queen it so isn’t.

Sandi and Noel, whilst individually amusing are just tedious. Prue, whilst clearly excellent in her field is as engaging as a dining room table.

The contestants are so diverse it’s like the producers are ticking a diversity checklist: wacky, gay, gay/but for goodness sake not white, French so we’ll miss Europe, disability blah blah blah

Rahul was lucky his last back was just slightly less disgusting than the other two.

Bluelonerose · 30/10/2018 22:10

I thought the show shoppers were hideous.
Who would fancy a mouldy rock as a cake Halloween Confused

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 30/10/2018 22:10

Rahul was really, really irritating with his whininess and drippiness. When he was good, he was great, but when he was bad he was awful and the judges glossed over it.

They did that copout thing again this year saying that everyone was equal going into the showstopper round when Kim-Joy was actually ahead. They do that on Masterchef as well.

Gigglebrain · 30/10/2018 22:11

I am currently sitting by a camp fire in the middle of a field in Yorkshire, so I googled the winner, and I am gutted! I wanted Kim Joy (and why has she not got a surname???) to win right from week one. So disappointed with the finalists and the result.

Thanks for the spoiler!

TSSDNCOP · 30/10/2018 22:12

Bake

Make it 15 minute shorter and none of the contestants would need the tedious back-stories.

Not one single bake this year vaguely resembled the sketches (which are my best bit)

JuneMyNameIsJune · 30/10/2018 22:13

It's interesting that people have picked up on non-white/gay contestants. Actually that's not what I meant, there is usually a token middle-aged wacky woman, working class guy who you're meant to be totally amazed that he's such a great baker because he loves football too etc. etc. It's just so insulting. Of course ANYONE can be a great baker, that's the whole point, we don't need to be led by the nose.

bridgetreilly · 30/10/2018 22:13

Because it's the same day and loads of people don't watch in real time. It's not that crazy.

It's crazy to click on threads and not expect people to be talking about the result, though.

ShesABelter · 30/10/2018 22:14

Rahul was awful the last two weeks though. He really should of went..he has a really bad, negative attitude and yeah I do think Kim joys constant crying was personally irritating but her little designs fat beat anyone else's over the weeks. If Rahul had kept his standard up the whole time he'd of been a worthy winner but he really slipped.

WhirlwindHugs · 30/10/2018 22:15

Seriously? This is the second thread in a few days where someone has complained about a tv show being tick box tokenism because, essentially they think there's not enough straight white people on it.

Why shouldn't Asian/Gay/Disabled people be on a baking show? The casting directors will pick from the people that they think will be most entertaining to film. So many people are hideously uncomfortable and stiff in front of the cameras. I should think it whittles down to quite small numbers of potential contestants very quickly to be honest.

It's easy to see why Rahul was chosen to compete, cracking baker that he is, and totally without conceit. Ruby has a fantastic sense of humour. Kim-Joy's quirky designs are visually amazing to look at. Briony last week again very funny.

This is why people get chosen. Not because of the colour of their skin or how many fingers they have.

And people that think it has to be about a list and not about merit need to go and consider how they would feel if their amazing achievement was pee'd on by people saying 'they're only there to be PC'.

WhipItGood · 30/10/2018 22:16

The winning ‘showstopper’ looked like the plasticine table from the local primary.

I like Noel, Sandi and Prue though. Tbh I lost interest it all some weeks ago though.

pandarific · 30/10/2018 22:17

Eh? The contestants have always walked over cake! Does no one remember Ruby Tandoh?

Anyway, YABU. This bunch was sweet, mich better than last year, and Rahul was a petal and an excellent baker. Well deserved imo.
