New study finds that fat consumption is the only cause of weight gain

medicalxpress.com/news/2018-07-fat-consumption-weight-gain.html

I know carbs are the villain at the moment, but it's only a matter of time before fat is the villain again.

I am on a low-fat diet and am sticking to that, I think, even though I am unfashionable. For the moment! Grin

It's sooooo confusing. No-one seems able to reach a consensus.

BaldricksCoffee · 30/10/2018 18:02

Absolutely not the case
It is the case. Eat 100 calories-worth of pasta for lunch, and those calories will get used up during the rest of the day. If you eat more calories than your body needs, then the rest will be stored. Mind you, the time of day will have an effect too, which is why it is recommended that you don't eat late in the evenings.

UserX · 30/10/2018 18:50

I actually now only eat one meal a day, which does include a portion of protein but most of my plate is veg cooked with oil / cheese / butter / cream

So you’ve... reduced your calorie intake?

Caprisunorange · 30/10/2018 18:56

Eating one meal a day is idiotic. I’d waste away on one meal a day. How are you not losing enourmous amounts of weight? Have you only been on this one meal diet a few weeks or something?

It’s hard to say but I’d say probably, especially because I don’t get overwhelming hunger like I used to. The meat I’m about to eat is about 500 cals, plus creamy cheesy veg probably with a load of mayo.

I’d say my meal is easily over a 1000 cals. I’ve actually had nuts today too, prob about 500 cals worth.

I used to eat around that on low fat, high carb - I was a MFP tracker - well most days anyway. But obviously ‘treats’ were a norm too.

Like I’ve said upthread, it is absolutely nigh on impossible to over eat on HFLC, your body no longer craves the hit of carbs, so inevitably calories reduce. There is just no bingeing and not because of willpower, because you don’t get the urge to

bumblebee39 · 30/10/2018 19:08

😂 love these kind of debates.

Honestly wish I had the mental energy. I have selective eating disorder and suspected orthorexia (where healthy eating turns obsessive basically) to contend with and literally some days eat nothing but slim fast and ready salted crisps!

Now with HG too and no freaking money I eat basically the same stuff every day, baked beans, green vegetables, sweetcorn, cheese sauce, gravy, ketchup, pasta, baked potatoes, sausages and mashed potato/chips/roasties.

Occasionally I buy bread and dunk in gravy or make a jam sandwich. I also eat instant noodles, some crisps, and drink tea/coffee...

That's me in "recovery" from an ED. there was a point where I drank nothing but sugar free energy drinks and ate nothing but BBQ chicken, beef burgers, coleslaw and corn on the cob.

Slimming world was terrible for me, so was low carb. Anything that eliminates or demonises a food group I stay well away from...

Idiotic?
You’d be surprised what the body is capable of if you fuel it right.

I’m not overweight or underweight. My BMI is 18.5. Been eating OMAD for a good few months (not every single day but 5/7 ish)

I’ve not lost any more weight while doing OMAD. There’s no effort, it seems to be how I’m most efficient. My energy is the best it’s ever been.

It’s not for everyone, but you’d be surprised how many people get to OMAD after getting fat apapted and feel the best they’ve ever felt

Caprisunorange · 30/10/2018 19:10

There must be something wrong if you’re not losing weight on one meal of 1000 calories a day. Do you binge when you get fed up of all the deprivation?

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 30/10/2018 19:14

Eat less food.
Mainly veg.
Move around more.

spanishwife · 30/10/2018 19:23

Jeez caprisun wind it in...

If you are short and have a very sedentary lifestyle, then eating a high calorie meal plus coffees, teas and small snacks throughout the day can reach 1200 calories which is plenty and very healthy

There is also evidence to show that once you have been overweight, your body has to work so much harder to keep it off, so if you were a size 22 but now a 10, then you have to eat even less than someone who was always a size 10 as an adult for example.

Caprisunorange · 30/10/2018 19:25

Oh c’mon, one meal a day isn’t sustainable or healthy for ANYONE. People need to take what they read on here with a pinch of salt re diet.

mooncuplanding · 30/10/2018 19:29

caprisun

I know it sounds unbelievable, but it’s the truth

No I don’t binge. Like I’ve said, the hunger that sits on your shoulder just disappears when you eat low carb. Your hunger is very different because you don’t get the sugar lows.,

our bodies are designed to go long periods of time. We would have been wiped out otherwise!

mooncuplanding · 30/10/2018 19:30

caprisun

Honestly, look stuff up

Fasting is a normal human condition

Caprisunorange · 30/10/2018 19:31

I’ve read plenty about fasting thanks. I’m not sitting here googling more rubbish in my own time

mooncuplanding · 30/10/2018 19:37

Ok good

I’m not suggesting you do fasting, do what you want. However, the point was about hunger and energy. I don’t need 3 meals a day because I predominantly fuel with fat and protein and that affects your hunger levels.

Caprisunorange · 30/10/2018 19:39

You’re going to pretty extreme levels not to feel hungry. Most people can eat normally and not feel hungry. And would lose large amounts of weight on a permanent 1200-1500 calories a day diet.

UserX · 30/10/2018 19:40

I’ve actually had nuts today too, prob about 500 cals worth.

So one main meal & one small meal.

It’s great you found something that works for you, but it’s a pretty rigid and restrictive way of eating. Pushing that kind of rigidity as the holy grail of dieting is at best misguided.

Am really enjoying the new pseudoscience term “fat adapted” though. What does that actually mean?

ferrier · 30/10/2018 20:09

You're incorrect caprisun. I eat two meals a day often and don't feel hungry. Your body adapts to the regime you give it by and large. I often have a large meal at lunch and then don't feel hungry at tea time but I eat something because I think I might get hungry before the next lunch time comes along. I'm toying with the idea of reducing to one meal a day. It is supposed to be better for the digestive system and increases life expectancy.

Caprisunorange · 30/10/2018 20:10

How is that incorrect? I eat 3 meals a day and don’t feel hungry. What’s your point? We don’t all go around hungry unless on some weird daddy food regime you know Hmm

ferrier · 30/10/2018 20:12

Because you're saying that those on one or two meals a day must be hungry. I'm not hungry and nor is mooncup. There are plenty of others like us. I should imagine many of us are on hflc.

Caprisunorange · 30/10/2018 20:15

I didn’t say anything about them being hungry. I asked why they weren’t losing weight

SerenDippitty · 30/10/2018 20:16

I eat three meals a day, I eat carbs, and I’m a healthy weight. I’m not super skinny though, I think that’s why a lot of people do hflc.

spanishwife · 30/10/2018 20:18

Caprisun - please work out your maintenance calories using a proper calculator. I bet its far less than you think. Because I am so sedentary, to stay at my current weight (size 10, 5ft 4) I need to eat 1400 a day. So of course eating between 1200 and 1500 across the week is totally normal and healthy for me. I know this is true because I've been tracking calories for years and the numbers add up.

mooncuplanding · 30/10/2018 20:18

userx

It doesn’t feel restrictive at all, that’s why I love it. And I know what restriction feels like. I’ve been there in crash diet times. Instead it frees up time, my productivity at work has increased, I’m up before my alarm (never had that my entire life) and it just takes food off your mind completely.

Fat adapted means that your body can actually use your fat stores for energy. Ever wondered why many obese people are hungry even though they’ve got loads of fat available? It’s bevause they are not fat adapted, their body won’t use their fat stores for energy because they are stuck in the insulin cycle.

Caprisunorange · 30/10/2018 20:18

Why would I need to do that?
