New study finds that fat consumption is the only cause of weight gain

medicalxpress.com/news/2018-07-fat-consumption-weight-gain.html

I know carbs are the villain at the moment, but it's only a matter of time before fat is the villain again.

I am on a low-fat diet and am sticking to that, I think, even though I am unfashionable. For the moment! Grin

Complex study becomes 30 lines of text on a webpage

I hate science reporting

Lweji · 30/10/2018 08:54

Getting significant favourable results in only 7 days is pretty good going.

Is it? Why only 7 days? What happens after 21 days?

LadyRochfordsSpikedGusset · 30/10/2018 08:55

Interesting. I don't think carbs are the devil at all. I lost loads of pregnancy weight eating jacket potatoes and pasta with low-cal sauce.

florafawna · 30/10/2018 08:55

I’m not really sure of the point of this

Discussion?

If we were all the same, what a dull place this would be

Wouldn't it just. Agree 100% Grin

Hmmm.🤨

Mice.
7 days.

Without access to the exact composition (% macronutrients, source/type of these) of the mouse chow they used for the different groups of mice it is impossible to know whether this research has any validity.

Not all research is valid. Much is biased with funding being provide by groups with vested interest in a particular outcome (whether corporate, political, religious etc)

RandomObject · 30/10/2018 08:55

That low-fat vegan 7-day program thing is such terrible science I don't even know where to start:

  • Retrospective study
  • Carried out by a man who sells books advocating this type of diet, which are mostly considered fad diet plans. This program is from his company, so of course he's going to say it works
  • Cohort consisted only of people who had chosen to go on a physician-controlled residential diet plan - they probably would have improved on whatever healthy diet they were given as they on average reported being overweight with health conditions
  • No controls used - everyone ate the same diet, how do you know a low-calorie high protein diet wouldn't have been even better?

We are in the minority these days Smile

Natural plant foods?

But op... they don't come in a 'low fat version'

So which low fat option food are you talking about?

gamerwidow · 30/10/2018 08:57

‘The excess calories you eat are the excess calories you wear’.
It doesn’t really matter where they come from. I don’t think there’s any sense in cutting out whole food groups without a good medical reason to do so. There is no such things as good or bad food if eaten in moderation.

Lweji · 30/10/2018 08:57

I agree with you, OP, that diets tend to go on fads.
You do seem to have missed your own point, though. Wink

Get us the Cochrane reviews. Then we're talking.

florafawna · 30/10/2018 08:57

Not all research is valid

How could I find a valid study? What would you recommend? Is there a body I could absolutely trust or do I look on a case-by-case basis? I assumed a good university study would be enough. I admit I don't know much about this!

OP - weightloss 'advice' has been Low Fat/High Carb for decades. In those decade people have got bigger and fatter.

I low carb; have done for years after yes, decades of low fat shite (full of sugar and chemicals to replace the fat mouth-feel) and within 6 weeks I had lost weight - more importantly, lost those 'love-handles' from my back and waist.

i love low carb/high fat. Our brains and nerves are made of fat and we need it. I'd rather my energy came from fat than from processed sugar.

Lweji · 30/10/2018 08:59

Get us the Cochrane reviews.

florafawna · 30/10/2018 08:59

Fruit and veg for instance.

I am also on a low fat diet (Weight Watchers). Low on meat and animal fat, high in fruit, veg and some plant fats like nuts and olive oil.

I think LCHF is fucking gross. I don’t care if you’re skinny as a rake, it’s just horrible to me, setting out to deliberately up your intake of animal produce when we’re all being told by most experts to reduce meat and dairy consumption for the sake of the planet Grin.

I know plenty will disagree.

Plant based high fat, low carb is doable too, but I would wager the majority of LCHF folk eat more animal produce than average.

florafawna · 30/10/2018 09:00

Even fruit is being demonised these days.

OP posts:
Caprisunorange · 30/10/2018 09:00

I completely agree with you OP. High fat low carb is a myth, and we’ll be laughing at people who fell for it in 30 years, the way we laugh at the cabbage soup diet types from the 70s

AnonaMouse1 · 30/10/2018 09:00

Which low fat foods do you mean?
That was my question

Just natural plant foods really.
Was your answer

How can natural plant foods come with a full/low fat option? I think you put that because you don't want your argument here to fail..... you really mean low fat supermarket foods like coleslaw/yogurts/processed foods etc where there is a low fat option.... crisps/biscuits/ice cream

WitsEnding · 30/10/2018 09:01

I used to love the F-plan and always lost weight on it - hope it does come back in fashion and we get better recipies! Not needed to lose weight lately so I haven't tried LCHF, but I feel weak without a substantial carb intake.

Caprisunorange · 30/10/2018 09:01

@Anonamouse1

“And 'low fat' is full of sugar and Chems to make it more palatable”

What sugar and “chemicals” are in semi skimmed milk, fat free Greek yogurt, low fat cheese, please?

florafawna · 30/10/2018 09:03

I hope I look like this when I'm 71

Low fat food is simply low fat compared to high fat. High fat: processed red meat, cheese, full fat dairy, mayonnaise

Low fat: low fat versions of the above, fruit, veg, fish, white meat, non creamy sauces, bread, cereals, legumes, pastas, rice etc etc etc

MrsStrowman · 30/10/2018 09:04

It depends on other things. I have PCOS and insulin resistance if I do a low fat only diet it makes no difference, if I restrict carbs to complex ones in small amounts, cut right down on sugar and monitor my fat intake I lose weight.

florafawna · 30/10/2018 09:05

How can natural plant foods come with a full/low fat option?

I have read back through my posts and at no point do I mention the word "option", so no idea where you got that from Confused

OP posts:
WitchesBritches · 30/10/2018 09:05

YANBU to think that. People weren’t wrong to think the Earth was was flat either.

...it doesn’t make it true though. Or sensible to believe it.
