New study finds that fat consumption is the only cause of weight gain

medicalxpress.com/news/2018-07-fat-consumption-weight-gain.html

I know carbs are the villain at the moment, but it's only a matter of time before fat is the villain again.

I am on a low-fat diet and am sticking to that, I think, even though I am unfashionable. For the moment! Grin

Gram for gram fat has more calories than carbs yes, but if you follow a calorie controlled diet with a higher proportion of protein / fat to carbs it’s proven you will not only feel fuller but feel better too. I think you need to find your news from more reputable sources tbh.

Lweji · 30/10/2018 08:42

Any "research" that claims "only cause" should be dismissed.

Just eat a balanced diet.

florafawna · 30/10/2018 08:42

Scientists from the University of Aberdeen

The study was published today (12 July) in the journal Cell Metabolism and includes 30 different diets that vary in their fat, carbohydrate (sugar) and protein contents

I think the sources check out fine.

In mice...

haverhill · 30/10/2018 08:44

A low fat diet will have fewer calories but will be hard to maintain over a lengthy period. Low-carb/higher fat eating makes you feel full so tends to be more successful for weight loss.

On people:

Conclusions - A low-fat, starch-based, vegan diet eaten ad libitum for 7 days results in significant favorable changes in commonly tested biomarkers that are used to predict future risks for cardiovascular disease and metabolic diseases

You can eat more carbs to feel full. Fat is very rich and you don't get much for your calories.

OP posts:
AnonaMouse1 · 30/10/2018 08:47

7 days? That's all?

treaclesoda · 30/10/2018 08:47

But that's not how people eat in reality. If you eat lots and lots of low fat food and feel constantly hungry you might end up eating more calories overall than if you eat more fat and feel full so don't eat any more. I don't think anyone has ever denied that fat contains more calories per gram. Just that many people find it easier to limit their calorie intake by cutting back on carbs. Individual choice surely?

florafawna · 30/10/2018 08:48

Getting significant favourable results in only 7 days is pretty good going.

OP posts:
AnonaMouse1 · 30/10/2018 08:48

Carbs? you don't feel full for long though

florafawna · 30/10/2018 08:49

Individual choice surely?

Oh, absolutely!

I just think it's a matter of time before the wheel turns and we're back to high carb/low fat. Old gimmer who has seen a lot of dietary u-turns over the years.

And 'low fat' is full of sugar and Chems to make it more palatable

laceygo · 30/10/2018 08:49

U keep arguing with people who are replying.to you... just do what u want them

Cherries101 · 30/10/2018 08:50

Studies on mice shouldn’t be used to inform diet choices, only studies on humans. There was a Harvard article about that and tbh I trust Harvard over Aberdeen www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/how-to-spot-questionable-nutrition-advice

florafawna · 30/10/2018 08:50

Not arguing. Discussing, I though. Showing the other side which is admittedly not very popular at the moment. Free discussion here. Taking everyone's opinion on board, I promise Smile

I don't mean horrible fake low fat foods. They are bad for you like all over-processed stuff. Agreed.

OP posts:
RtHonLady · 30/10/2018 08:51

Everybody needs fat in their diet, preferably from plants and oily fish. Just avoid saturated and processed days from margarine etc

TitsalinaBumSquash · 30/10/2018 08:52

I cannot lose weight eating low fat foods and carbs, it doesn't matter what I do it just doesn't shift.
Cutting the carbs right back and upping the fats (avocado/butter/nuts mainly but comes from cheese/cream/red meat) I have lost weight well and feel healthier for it.

AnonaMouse1 · 30/10/2018 08:52

Which low fat foods do you mean then?

Lweji · 30/10/2018 08:52

Fat is very rich and you don't get much for your calories.

Just some fat soluble vitamins and some important lipids.

It's very simplistic as there are different types of fat, with different cost-benefit aspects.

You can't just lump all fat in the same box.

And it depends on what is meant by low fat.
We are not supposed to eat everything soaked in butter and oil.
But then, it's not healthy to remove virtually all fat from a diet.

See my earlier question of "single cause" not of "a cause".

MartyMcFly1984 · 30/10/2018 08:52

Not unreasonable to think it no. Unreasonable if you think I come to Aibu for diet advice/preaching though. I’m not really sure of the point of this.
You stick to your diet. If we were all the same, what a dull place this would be

florafawna · 30/10/2018 08:53

I am not a vegan, but have thought seriously about cutting back on animals fats. Being vegan would take care of that, I guess, so long as I didn't pile on the olive oil and nuts.

OP posts:
ChilliJamandAvocado · 30/10/2018 08:53

Nope, carbs are the driver of insulin production, which is the hormone that tells your body to lay down fat. Eating fat has a negligible effect on insulin production. Caveat - only if you don't eat carbs with your fat. Carby + fatty diet seems to be the deadliest combo.

Best is high fat, medium protein, low carb (starch & sugar... vegetables & salad are fine)

I lost a good 10kg on low carb last year. I now eat the odd roastie, handful of crisps or 1/4 cup of rice, anymore makes me feel really off.

florafawna · 30/10/2018 08:53

Which low fat foods do you mean then?

Just natural plant foods really.
