That really. DP always seems to have to be the fastest bastard on the road. It scares the shit out of me to the extent where I have anxiety attacks on certain routes. I can't drive and the only other people I've spent much time on DCs and Motorways are DBro and DF who are both the same if not worse. Is this normal? I have lost a friend in a RTA so appreciate I may be oversensitive.

What's with the (77)

The sped limit is 70

Glasgowbound · 29/10/2018 12:48

Babdoc I'm assuming you don't live in the central belt.

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 29/10/2018 14:37

What's with the (77)

Because you get a bit of leeway with speed guns: the limit plus 10%.

siakcaci · 29/10/2018 14:46

The limit is 70, not (77).

anniegranny · 29/10/2018 14:52

A lot of people including dp don't know this, but the speed limit on most dual carriageways is 60 mph!

MaxTeyon · 29/10/2018 14:54

Not sure what country you’re in, but that’s not the case in the UK. NSL is 70mph

Thisnamechanger · 29/10/2018 15:01

Did your DH do the speed awareness course and then nearly lose his licence for another speeding offence? Because you only get a course offered for lower excess speeds, not the higher speeds which would result in a ban. Or does he have a lot of points already?

Nearly losing license was separate - speed awareness courses were for being flashed by cameras. The whole thing was weird..apparently you are supposed to be only able to do one speed awareness course but there's a weird loophole if you do one in Dorset and you can do two?

I never got to the bottom of the nearly losing his licence. He told me a copper pulled him over doing 100 at about 2am and told him he could get banned for that....but then let him off (?!).

I don't really get that because surely a copper is obliged to nick you if they see you breaking the law. He was really sheepish and when he confessed this to me and knows how I feel about speeding so no chance he made it up to sound impressive. Weird.

If he returns regularly to Cornwall to do his hobby, is he a surfer?
He might like the adrenaline rush of driving fast.

Nailed it. He used to be a professional sportsperson.

Not at all, coppers can use their discretion. They have with me a number of times.

CurbsideProphet · 29/10/2018 15:05

Your partner / father / brother sound like the man who was speeding and wrote off my car. Couldn't give a shit about anyone else on the road, so long as they're getting their rocks off pretending to be in Grand Theft Auto Hmm

There's such arrogance in believing that you're so much more important than everyone else that the law doesn't apply. The roads on mainlamd Europe are irrelevant. Just look at the M6 by Preston; serious accidents every other day due to inappropriate and dangerous driving on a poor road surface. I'd like to know where posters live who drive on these empty dual carriageways with well-maintained surfaces Hmm

Gromance02 · 29/10/2018 15:06

85mph is over the speed limit but on a dry day with very little traffic on the road, I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

EBearhug · 29/10/2018 15:09

I did a speed awareness course, and they said you could do it again if it was more than 3 years since you previously had.

Thar was quite a few years ago, though, so the rules may have changed.

MaxTeyon · 29/10/2018 15:10

Within 5 mins drive from my home I can be on a recently surfaced NSL DC. Busy during rush hour, very quiet during the night.

Mishappening · 29/10/2018 15:11

85 shouldn’t be an issue. - may the good lord preserve us!

"I only stole a DVD player - it shouldn't be an issue - could have been a big TV."

Can you see the similarity with these two statements?

They are both about BREAKING THE LAW!!!

Just don't do it - there is nothing at all OK about it.

Trust me; I worked for a trauma service, mopped up the blood, and more to the point mopped up the broken families.

The law is the law - it is there for a reason and should NEVER be broken.

Mishappening · 29/10/2018 15:13

85mph is over the speed limit but on a dry day with very little traffic on the road, I wouldn't bat an eyelid. - and another! Jeez! Pitiful!

A car is a lethal weapon. Would you wave a loaded gun around?

MaxTeyon · 29/10/2018 15:18

Just don't do it - there is nothing at all OK about it.

I disagree. I was always taught that it’s fine to use speed where appropriate. It’s inappropriate speed that’s the problem and the skill lies in understanding the difference.

siakcaci · 29/10/2018 15:18

A lot of people including dp don't know this, but the speed limit on most dual carriageways is 60 mph!

Yeah that's not a thing.

Lots of dualers have limits below the national limit of 70mph. Some are 60, some 50, some 40, locally we have 2 that are 30mph.

To say MOST are 60mph is ridiculous.

They are 70mph unless otherwise stated.

Mishappening · 29/10/2018 16:05

I was always taught that it’s fine to use speed where appropriate. - who the hell taught you that?! It is bollocks! No wonder our roads are host to such carnage.

If it says 70, it means 70. The same with 60/50/40/30/20.

It is not rocket science. Just do as you are told. There are no exceptions, even from someone with as large a head as you.

MaxTeyon · 29/10/2018 16:19

who the hell taught you that?!

An elite police driver, ex motorway, ex police motorcyclist. I’m sure he’d love to know that you find his expert opinion “bollocks”

siakcaci · 29/10/2018 16:26

Use speed where appropriate. Make progress.

WITHIN THE LIMITS.

Because that is the LAW.

One singular ex police driver does not represent the law. Thankfully.

ShowOfHands · 29/10/2018 16:44

Ah a speed limit on dual carriageways thread.

Bingo!

What do I win?

CurbsideProphet · 29/10/2018 16:59

I'm still wondering why posters need to drive faster than the speed limit? How are you so important that you need to speed to your destination? Hmm

ShowOfHands you missed "the dual carriageways near me have perfect road surfaces and I'm the only person who ever drives on them". Grin

Mishappening · 29/10/2018 17:01

One singular ex police driver does not represent the law. Thankfully. - exactly. Singular indeed!

MaxTeyon - please feel free to tell this person that his statement is bollocks. It is.

"Elite" - God help us!

Drive within the LAW - end of.

MongerTruffle · 29/10/2018 17:02

Because you get a bit of leeway with speed guns: the limit plus 10%.

It's 10% + 2 mph.

I'm still wondering why posters need to drive faster than the speed limit? How are you so important that you need to speed to your destination? - this, exactly this.

No-one is above the law - no-one at all.
