to think 85 on a dual carriage way is to fast?

That really. DP always seems to have to be the fastest bastard on the road. It scares the shit out of me to the extent where I have anxiety attacks on certain routes. I can't drive and the only other people I've spent much time on DCs and Motorways are DBro and DF who are both the same if not worse. Is this normal? I have lost a friend in a RTA so appreciate I may be oversensitive.

Miles per hour? 😳

Even 80 kph is too fast! Oh my God. I wouldn't get in a car with him.

mummabubs · 28/10/2018 20:01

My ex used to drive like this OP and I also had panic attacks and was terrified of being in the car with him. (He also smoked weed and used his phone routinely whilst driving). It really is as others have said- it doesn't really matter about the road condition or how amazing a driver your DP thinks he is... you can't control what other road users will do or whether a branch might fall/unforeseeable hazards may present themselves. The speed limit on dual carriageway is there for a reason and I'm sure he'd feel terrible if he had an accident which injured anyone else due to his own arrogance and selfish behaviour.

I know from experience it's hard to stand up to this selfish behaviour (he also shows no respect for you if he still does it knowing how it makes you feel). It was a bit easier for me in some ways as I could also drive so I started to avoid it but I'd urge you to tell him just how this makes you feel. If he's worth anything he'll listen and change his behaviour. X

LoniceraJaponica · 28/10/2018 20:02

80kph is only 50mph AfterSchool. Motorway speed limts are usually 70mph.

Thisnamechanger · 28/10/2018 20:03

He has said since he almost lost his license that he never goes above 85 even when I'm not in the car but I just don't believe him.

mummabubs · 28/10/2018 20:05

If that's his response OP then he's still not seeing the issue. Dual carriageway speed limit is 60mph. If he lost his licence would he also lose his job x

Abra1de · 28/10/2018 20:05

People are having panic attacks at 85mph?
People think 80km is too fast.

I do love MN sometimes.

mummabubs · 28/10/2018 20:05

*?

mummabubs · 28/10/2018 20:07

No need to be judgey @Abra1de. I've witnessed car accidents and been in one myself where inappropriate speed was the issue both times. I now work in a setting where people go following car accidents who are left with life-changing injuries. Being a passenger and not having control of how someone else drives and taking safety seriously isn't anything to be ashamed of or be mocked. I'm sorry you feel differently.

incorruptibledream · 28/10/2018 20:08

Dual carriageway speed limit is not 60mph. Best go back to the books yourself ;)

Thisnamechanger · 28/10/2018 20:09

Is it? He told me it was 70. No he wouldn't but it'd be very hard for him to get home. He lives with me in the week in London then we go to his in Cornwall at the weekend. He wouldn't be able to do his main hobby at all.

My 76 year old grandma was just killed by a speeding driver, I have zero sympathy, I hope he gets caught before its someone else's loved one

MongerTruffle · 28/10/2018 20:11

Even 80 kph is too fast!
What?!

ThistleAmore · 28/10/2018 20:13

Are we talking kph or mph here, because I'm confused.

85kph is about 54mph and if OP is having panic attacks at that speed on a DC or motorway, then that's a problem for the OP...

Ontheboardwalk · 28/10/2018 20:13

Dual carriageway way limit is not 60mph

Taylor22 · 28/10/2018 20:14

Duel carriageways with a grass verge are 70.

Thisnamechanger · 28/10/2018 20:14

I'm talking about mph

OP posts:
Sexnotgender · 28/10/2018 20:17

That’s far too fast. He’s an idiot, I hope he loses his license.

MongerTruffle · 28/10/2018 20:18

Duel carriageways with a grass verge are 70.
All dual carriageways have a physical central reservation. If they don't, they're single carriageways (even if they have two or more lanes in each direction).

mummabubs · 28/10/2018 20:18

Apologies, I legitimately meant to type 70! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ (currently have myself and 1yo with tonsillitis so the fact I'm able to type at all is a miracle!!) Sorry OP, definitely meant 70! X

LoniceraJaponica · 28/10/2018 20:18

"Is it? He told me it was 70"

Some posters need to brush up on their Highway Code.
Most dual carriageways have the national speed limit sign which is 70mph. However, in built up areas or areas where there are more hazards the speed limit can vary. For example the A1 in Gateshead has a 50mph speed limit. Some dual carriageways have a 40mph speed limit. It is up to the driver to observe the road signs and drive accordingly.

Motorway speed limits are usually 70mph, but the M621 near Leeds has a 50mph speed limit. Again the driver needs to pay attention to the speed limit signs.

mummabubs · 28/10/2018 20:19

Maybe point out the effect losing his licence would have (as obviously the possibility of seriously injuring himself or others isn't something he sees as a genuine possibility right now?) x

Thisnamechanger · 28/10/2018 20:23

I don't think he thinks he'd lose his license for 85. I don't know how it works.ive just messaged him saying how I feel.

OP posts:
Glasgowbound · 28/10/2018 20:24

I love him and I want him to be safe
I don’t love him and I don’t care if he’s safe or not. He will likely be, speeders cause accidents and then drive off while someone else dies.

Abra1de · 28/10/2018 20:24

Inappropriate speed—for sure. But that is often 40 in a 30mph zone. Or 70mph, ie speed limit, in rain or fog on a motorway.

85mph on a clear day on an empty motorway may be illegal but causing panic attacks sounds extreme unless the driver was braking hard or not keeping to braking distances, etc.

Thisnamechanger · 28/10/2018 20:25

My bloody DF and DBro are just as bad. When he told them about nearly getting banned and they asked how fast he was going they made impressed noises. I was fucking furious when he told me! I don't understand it.
