To think this is a bloody rip off and be annoyed at my stupidity?!

Have just purchased a handmade Christmas gift from a local Facebook seller. Lovely item, ideal gift for a friend and was glad to be “buying local”.

Have received the item, realised a little while later that the label from a well known bargain Swedish shop was left on (by accident I assume!).

AIBU to message the seller? I’m annoyed that I’ve paid almost £10 for something which she bought for less than £1Blush

I'd file this in the ...

"If it's that simple, why not do it yourself?" box.

I think in this case yanbu - with that description I would expect the candle itself to be handmade as well as the added personalisation.

Butterymuffin · 30/10/2018 08:10

Market forces innit? You decided it was worth £10 which seems remarkably cheap for a truly 'handmade' candle to me.

Strugglingtodomybest · 30/10/2018 08:33

I would complain. Save someone else from wasting their money.

Handmade my arse.

I sell these personalised candles for £3 so yep you’ve been ripped off! The vinyl and time to weed and stick take time but not long enough to justify that kind of mark up!

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/10/2018 08:55

I can't get worked up about this TBH. Obviously the seller was laying it on a bit thick, but far bigger companies do this all the time.

Innocent smoothies label themselves with interesting, expensive looking ingredients, but if you look on the label of a kiwi and lime smoothie, it's about 80% apple, banana and grape with less than 10% of kiwi and lime.

Nutella adverts go on about all the wholesome sounding milk nuts and cocoa, but fail to mention that it's about 70% sugar and palm oil.

Someone upthread said that you can buy the stickers for a couple of quid each.

The candles cost 85 pence each and you have to go to Ikea to get them. So costs time and petrol money. I live virtually on their doorstep but most people don't, so it can be a bit of an ordeal getting there.

Then you have to put the stickers on the candles which probably takes a bit of practice to get them on straight without any bubbles etc.

There are literally hundreds of sellers on Etsy doing personalised bits and pieces where the bits and pieces will come from Ikea, Tiger or wherever. Most of them probably won't even be making the equivalent of NMW for their time.

MibsXX · 30/10/2018 14:51

To be fair.. IF it's what you ordered, and at the time were happy to pay that for it then what really is the problem?

( from now on though you know how to make them yourself!)

Belindabauer · 30/10/2018 14:59

I think it's a nice gift.
However a home made candle is just that. A candle made from scratch in someone's home. Not a mass produced candle bought from Ikea that has been personalised.
Personalised is different.

My mum and auntie had a spell of buying cheap plants from the garden centre. Separating them and selling them on.
They were not advertised as home grown or anything but every one sold.
My mum is a gardener so I'm not sure what people thought.
