Have just purchased a handmade Christmas gift from a local Facebook seller. Lovely item, ideal gift for a friend and was glad to be “buying local”.

Have received the item, realised a little while later that the label from a well known bargain Swedish shop was left on (by accident I assume!).

AIBU to message the seller? I’m annoyed that I’ve paid almost £10 for something which she bought for less than £1Blush

I use ikea cushion covers and inners.
I embroider a design on and sell them for £10.

I have added value though and they can be customised and personalised.

I leave the labels on so that people have the care instructions. Should I be removing them then?

Booksandwine80 · 28/10/2018 18:19

neddle it wasn’t a care label or anything but the actual sticky barcode label Grin

Agree with what @Foodylicious said.
I myself have sold hand decorated xmas eve plates in the past. Usually charge around the £6 mark for a decorated plate although the plates cost me £1 to buy. The other £5 is to cover the cost of materials to decorate and the time it takes me to decorate them (usually 1hr30mins per plate).

Booksandwine80 · 28/10/2018 18:25

jcoc147 I totally get that and respect anyone who does this as a business. This, however is literally sticking a label on an item which cost 85p.

If it was hand painted like the item you described I would have no issue whatsoever Smile

You thought the item was worth £10 when you bought it. How does the label change that?

Bacardibabe · 28/10/2018 18:26

The actual item itself though(without the label with surname)is it something that could be handmade? and she's misled you that its been handmade?

soulrider · 28/10/2018 18:30

Handmade and personalised is a bit cheeky when it sounds like really it's only personalised. I know that when I sold on Etsy they emphasised that you should be really clear about what you were selling, what everything was made of and if any parts of it were bought.

BMOT · 28/10/2018 18:31

can you not smudge out the name and show us? im trying to get a business off the ground and so am interested in what people consider homemade

Booksandwine80 · 28/10/2018 18:31

IABU Grin at the end of the day it’s a lovely gift which friend will love....it’s just opened my eyes a bit Blush

It is misleading though isn’t it? She hasn’t made it. She just added a few letters

Boohissmiss · 28/10/2018 18:33

Please share with name blacked out I need a laugh

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/10/2018 18:50

Surely it was obvious what you were buying though? It's like those heart map things of significant places that sell for about £80 on I Saw You Coming Not on the High Street.

You could make it yourself with an Ikea frame and a bit of cutting and sticking for about £10-20 or less if you just print the maps off the internet.

ALemonyPea · 28/10/2018 18:52

Handmade may mean something completely different to the seller though. She might think that by adding certain things she made, makes the item handmade.

I'm intrigued as to what it is.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 28/10/2018 18:52

neddle (shouldn’t that be needle?!😂)

No, you shouldn’t be cutting the labels out, just selling honestly as purchased stock cushions hand embroidered, NOT handmade cushions.

BMOT

It should be clear from your pictures and wording what is/isn’t handmade. It’s easy enough to word it honestly and not over egg the ‘handmade’, the problem is most people don’t want to be honest. Feel free to PM if you want, I’m happy to help.

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/10/2018 18:56

But what is 'handmade'? Mass produced items in factories are generally handmade by hundreds/thousands of people sat at sewing machines/work stations are handmaking things to a degree. I'd expect that photo frames etc are put together by people not machines because of the logistics of assembling the item.

SubtitlesOn · 28/10/2018 18:59

Please link to item in Swedish shop

Miscible · 28/10/2018 19:03

You’re fully entitled to ask for a refund on the basis that you bought the item in question directly as a result of the seller's misrepresentation.

HildaZelda · 28/10/2018 19:04

My BIL and his wife were selling their 'home baking' at local fairs and markets. They were buying everything in Lidl and repackaging.
Did I mention they're both CF's by the way?!

Tahani · 28/10/2018 19:05

as Miscible says
You’re fully entitled to ask for a refund on the basis that you bought the item in question directly as a result of the seller's misrepresentation.

Bombardier25966 · 28/10/2018 19:10

Given that we still don't know what the item is, we can't say that it has been misrepresented. Handmade does not mean that every component has been made by hand. Very few handmade items are, especially those that cost a tenner!

April2020mom · 28/10/2018 19:30

Can you complain or not? Have you got any actual good quality pictures of the item? Politely ask for a refund. Is it handmade or not?

Booksandwine80 · 28/10/2018 19:50

April2002mom

I can complain, of course but have decided that I am probably being unreasonable Smile

Yes have photos of the item.

I’m not going to ask for a refund.

No, it’s not handmade.
