Have just purchased a handmade Christmas gift from a local Facebook seller. Lovely item, ideal gift for a friend and was glad to be “buying local”.

Have received the item, realised a little while later that the label from a well known bargain Swedish shop was left on (by accident I assume!).

AIBU to message the seller? I’m annoyed that I’ve paid almost £10 for something which she bought for less than £1Blush

So you paid for a hand made blended candle and got an Ikea candle with a label on, and you're not going to complain? Why?

kateandme · 29/10/2018 00:57

it depends because if it is a frame which she has put labeling on herself would you expect someone to make the actual frames?

hungryhippo90 · 29/10/2018 01:09

You paid a tenner for that?

Please complain. It’s worth £5max!

And I’m not sure the scent is Christmassy. She’s not even spared a thought for that knowing it’s a Christmas gift.

FoldyRoll · 29/10/2018 01:21

Did the £10 include P&P, OP?

WiddlinDiddlin · 29/10/2018 01:52

I think at the very least, I'd have a word in her ear-hole about her advertising wording..

£10 for a personalised candle holder plus scented candle IS cheap tbh, though also about all thats worth too.

But labelling the CANDLE as handmade when its Ikea .. thats not on.

She may be genuinely unaware of her wording because handmade is a very vague term really - if she has a Cricut or other die cutter and is making her own vinyl decals she can claim those are handmade...but then so could someone who was freehand cutting with a blade - one requires huge skill the other requires a machinea nd the knowledge to use it and the right dies...

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/10/2018 02:55

You can easily make that lettering with either a Silhouette or Cricut machine

I have no idea what those things are, but presumably they cost money?

The candle would have also cost a minimum of £2.85 in postage, was that included?

The description was a bit off, but proper handmade fancy candles from natural ingredients in personalised jars probably cost far more than £10, so I'm not sure what you expected really.

Also the seller is doing this as a business so needs to make a profit from the endeavour. At least it's more tasteful than all the glittery shite or 'hampers' of cheap toiletries or chocolate.

Yonijust · 29/10/2018 03:24

How big is it?

Did she deliver it?

What flavour is it?

shearwater · 29/10/2018 04:21

A hand made candle should cost a lot more than £10. She shouldn't describe the candle itself as home made if it isn't, but there is nothing wrong with personalising it in the way she has and selling them for £10.

jemihap · 29/10/2018 05:00

My local ''artisan rustic baker'' buys most of her products from the wholesaler then just displays them in artisan rustic baskets... all the mugs and idiots with more money than sense still lap it up though.

ChalkDoodler · 29/10/2018 06:15

@BarbaraofSevillle it is basically a small machine that precision cuts stuff whether it's card for card making, heat transfer vinyl for t shirts or cold vinyl for adding to wood for signs or in this case, words to glass. It cuts fabric, foam, and stencils so you can ink stuff. You can also print any picture and it precision cuts it out.

I have had mine about 5/6 years and I bought it because my children have normal names but they aren't found on any keyring or mug.

Yes there is the initial outlay but it's about £300 but it is incredibly versatile.

It is an incredible machine. Here is a video of mine for you and anyone else who is interested in what it does, it has moved onto a more advanced model now that does a lot more.

Reanimated it’s not their only present, it’s one of a few.....Hmm

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/10/2018 06:33

I’d love to receive it OP. I’d much prefer a candle over something to “eat or drink”

I’d be leaving a bad review though, what a rip off.

Oblomov18 · 29/10/2018 07:05

I don't like any homemade tatt. But Seriously I don't understand your objection.
isn't this what they all do? buy some cheap tat from IKEA or something online, add a bit of glitter, or a couple of letters, and that's what they're selling.

surely you know this?

Ignoramusgiganticus · 29/10/2018 07:13

I'd tell her to change her wording to hand personalised as it's misleading saying the candle was home made but tbh you have paid for her idea and effort.
You could have done the same thing with effort and inclination.

Donna1001 · 29/10/2018 07:14

I’d be annoyed too. Especially with that profit!

I almost bought some personalised Santa plates last year, from a FB seller, think they were £8. Then I saw exact same plates (without names) in Home Bargains for a pound.

Cheeky mare!

Helipad · 29/10/2018 08:10

Donna it’s not cheeky unless the personalisation is badly done. You are paying for the personalisation and she is charging for her time.

OP - I agree with others, you can complain about being mislead it’s a handmade candle but YABU for expecting a handmade AND personalised candle for a tenner.

Did she display the candle measurements on her page? Or did you assume from a pic what size it is?

For everyone else, sellers, even FB tat ones are allowed to build little profit and charge for their time. It’s hard to compete in handmade market when people resent you charging for your time, skill and little something to cover over heads too. Nevermind to try build a little profit in too Hmm

Leannakate · 29/10/2018 09:16

Is there any reason why people won't just say shop names on here? Like surely nobody will be taking legal action against you if you mention stuff like this? Misses point of thread

concretesieve · 29/10/2018 12:23

meatball carved into the initial of your name

Grin
Whitecurrants · 29/10/2018 12:39

Without seeing the ad it's hard to tell exactly how misleading it was, she has certainly hand-decorated it as she stuck the label on. I'm not sure that what you've got is actually any different from what you could have expected as you paid for a decorated candle and that's what you have got. It may smell a little fake but there's no guarantee that a candle that was actually handmade would smell any better.

rainbowquack · 29/10/2018 17:25

Holy moly, I would definitely complain. That is NOT what they advertised.

BloodyMary75 · 29/10/2018 18:09

if she has put something together using existing items and personalised it, and you are happy with the product then its worth what you have paid. Lots of crafts people buy some sort of base in to decorate or embellish. Do you really expect her to hand-make a picture frame too? Would cost more than £10!

Booksandwine80 · 29/10/2018 18:26

BloodyMary75 what’s a picture frame got to do with it?

Did you RTFT? Hmm

OP posts:
Superhansette · 29/10/2018 18:36

I personally would be contacting her to request a refund because the item is not as described. If you want you can quote the Consumer Rights Act and all the stuff to do with distance selling.

It doesn't really matter how much it cost, it's not what you paid for!

ChooChooBeanz · 29/10/2018 18:50

Why would anybody automatically leave a negative review on Facebook without first trying to reach a compromise with the seller first? ....especially as it’s a local seller / small business 😐

Booksandwine80 · 29/10/2018 18:57

I haven’t said anything about leaving a negative review Confused
