To think this is a bloody rip off and be annoyed at my stupidity?!

Have just purchased a handmade Christmas gift from a local Facebook seller. Lovely item, ideal gift for a friend and was glad to be “buying local”.

Have received the item, realised a little while later that the label from a well known bargain Swedish shop was left on (by accident I assume!).

AIBU to message the seller? I’m annoyed that I’ve paid almost £10 for something which she bought for less than £1Blush

I quite like that.

I hope you are my friend!

Member869894 · 28/10/2018 21:07

I don't think she's done anything wrong at all!

VerbeenaBeeks · 28/10/2018 21:08

I was all set to say that YANBU, but thinking about it and reading the replies, without extra detail I'm not sure if YABU instead.
No detail whatsoever to go on. If it's a £1 frame for example, and they've customised it? That's time that's gone into that.Which costs.
Gifts can cost more than what you see, for example if you make cakes as I'm good at decorating cakes you've got all your ingredients if baking from scratch,or even if you aren't you factor in decorations and baking time etc.

VerbeenaBeeks · 28/10/2018 21:12

Hmm...just seen your update after posting that!
Erm. If there was an IKEA £1 candle label on the actual candle I'd be a bit Hmm BUT on the other hand she has presumably hand decorated the candle with the wording - which presumably you weren't prepared to do and you liked in the first place to buy.
Time and demand and all that. If the label wasn't carelessly left on, would you still have liked it?

Boohissmiss · 28/10/2018 21:15

Wow £10 for that I’m in the wrong business

C0untDucku1a · 28/10/2018 21:17

Review the item.

LightastheBreeze · 28/10/2018 21:27

Well it says it’s smells of vanilla ice cream and waffles on Ikea website so I guess that is two scents, blended Grin

sophiec123 · 28/10/2018 21:29

Nope, you got ripped off! So she bought an ikea candle and added the gold lettering?

LightastheBreeze · 28/10/2018 21:32

They are not hand made just personalised and you have been ripped off

ReanimatedSGB · 28/10/2018 21:35

It sounds like the ad implied, quite strongly, that the seller had made the candle themselves and mixed the perfume oils 'specially'. So, yeah, it's at least misrepresentation. (It it was being sold as just 'personalised' then that would be OK given that there are a lot of mugs who would actually pay a tenner for a fucking candle).

HellenaHandbasket · 28/10/2018 21:37

I'd be asking her what the special blend of oils in the home made candle was, and how she can claim an IKEA candle was made at home tbh.

WanderingTrolley1 · 28/10/2018 21:43

That’s a ridiculous price for that. I would not be happy, at all, and would tell her why.

UpstartCrow · 28/10/2018 21:43

For £10 I'd be so miffed I'd set Trading Standards on her.

Angryangryyoungwoman · 28/10/2018 21:44

This is basically my sister in laws business! She buys stuff from ikea and personalises it, people pay good money for it 💁‍♀️ to be fair, it's all beautifully designed and packaged, I think it is something that some people would rather pay someone else to do

babywipessolveanything · 28/10/2018 21:52

I just searched "Christmas at the sticker" on eBay and the labels are £1.89.

BUT

I think it's a lovely gift. You can't change what you paid for it so stop thinking about it. You won't care after a while!

ChalkDoodler · 28/10/2018 21:56

You can easily make that lettering with either a Silhouette or Cricut machine, I have a Silhouette one and have personalised things from my children as their names are not found on any items you can buy.

It would take me about 20 minutes to label that candle, from writing the words in the software, the machine cuts it out of transfer vinyl, weed out the excess to leave the letters behind, transfer tape and attach to candle.

I live right near an Ikea too Grin

Letsgetreadytorumba · 28/10/2018 22:01

It’s lovely but to say “handmade candle” is misrepresentation.

LightastheBreeze · 28/10/2018 22:08

Did it come in a nice gift box as that would add to it, still not handmade though

incywincybitofa · 28/10/2018 22:53

It's hand decorated not handmade. I'm sorry you feel cheated because it is a lovely thoughtful gift for a family

flumpybear · 28/10/2018 23:26

Oh bloody hell OP you must complain that's awful!!

Miscible · 28/10/2018 23:43

I can complain, of course but have decided that I am probably being unreasonable

But you aren't! You agreed to buy a large handmade candle, you got a small non-handmade candle. How could it possibly be unreasonable to complain about that?

ReanimatedSGB · 28/10/2018 23:52

YABU for having been willing to pay £10 for a fucking candle in the first place, TBH. If you have a £10 present limit, you might at least give people something they can eat or drink.

EveryCarIsAPplCarrier · 28/10/2018 23:55

@Booksandwine80

Haven’t read the whole thread but have read all your comments, just to say a family member of mine makes handmade candles and by handmade she literally mixes the scents, the wax and pours the candles into moulds etc. That’s what I consider a handmade candle to be.
Now the personalisation part, that does take some time (she does that too - she’s quite artsy) but even so I’d say £10- £15 is probably what she’d charge for that?
I think you’ve been ripped off, this isnt home handmade... it may be HOMEmade and personalised, but not handmade x

VerbeenaBeeks · 29/10/2018 00:02

YABU for having been willing to pay £10 for a fucking candle in the first place, TBH.

Some people love candles, I know I do.Ten pounds for a candle is reasonable.

MyDcAreMarvel · 29/10/2018 00:21

THIs May be the year I get organised and sell Christmas tat.
