To think LUSH have gone too far?

I used to use Lush products quite often, I loved their soaps and bath bombs etc. I slowly stopped using them because I noticed the prices were ever increasing and pink bathwater loses its novelty when it's costing you £5+. Regardless, I still always went in before Christmas to buy my DM a bottle of Snow Fairy because it's her absolute fave.

I went in yesterday to buy her annual bottle and literally couldn't believe that they were asking £27.95 for the big bottle. That's £28 for a bottle of SOAP!! I even had to check with a staff member that I hadn't misread, she said they'd just put the prices up again. I realise they use natural ingredients and are cruelty free, but for me this still doesn't justify this price.

AIBU to think they've gone too far and you'd have to be crazy to pay that?

get a migraine as soon as I'm in sight of the shop

This!

I can smell a Lush store before I see it.

If Lush products are natural or eco-friendly, I’ve never yet smelt a garden that makes my stomach heave.

Holidayshopping · 24/10/2018 19:02

so I do know they are pricey, but if I couldn’t afford them, I’d not grumble. I like Jo Malone candles, but I don’t buy them

Jo Malone and Bentley have always been out of most people’s prices range though, whereas the OP’s point that Lush used to be affordable and now they’ve put their prices up so much that it’s not, is fair enough.

Smileyk · 24/10/2018 19:03

I'm with the posters who boycotted them over the police campaign thing they did. I miss Ceridwens Cauldron but there are other nice bath products out there that I can buy.

daisychain01 · 24/10/2018 19:03

I can't stand the thought of all those chemicals, and scent on my skin.

And the price is seriously offputting.

daisychain01 · 24/10/2018 19:08

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but ....

83 LUSH PRODUCTS CONTAIN PARABENS. As you can see just by reading the ingredient lists, many Lush products contain questionable ingredients that have been banned or restricted in other countries

This is from an article called The Ugly Truth about Lush. Parabens contain ingredients that could be carcinogenic.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/10/2018 19:10

I haven’t bought anything since their anti police campaign and tbh only use them for trichomania as it is only shampoo my sen child will use.

simiisme · 24/10/2018 19:10

My love affair with Lush finished a while back.
The final nail in the coffin for me was the anti-police propaganda in their ill-advised campaign.
They also bang on about being 'ethical' yet their pricing structure is far from it for their customers.
Luckily for me a lovely bath bomb/candle/toiletries shop opened in our town - they are cheaper, do loads of vegan products as well as the usual cruelty-free and also sell online Give them a look: www.bonnebombe.co.uk/ The only product I miss, as it's unique to them, is Karma perfume

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/10/2018 19:10

Lots of other companies that have more natural products and won’t fleece you.

Same!! ^

dontgobaconmyheart · 24/10/2018 19:12

I've never bought anything from Lush but did consider it once, left the shop because i couldn't bear the staff, thought i'd order online, checked the ingredients online and realised it's not quite what it's made out to be anyway so really- what's the point of paying so much. The bath bombs are extortionate and i don't get how anyone is bathing in all of that and not getting thrush/uti because i know i would.

They seem to do a lot of promo on youtube and similar, my teenage niece is always talking about how her favourite youtubers use bathbombs every day and stick two or three in the bath to 'create their own' [hmmm]. It's impossible to communicate to her that they're probably paid to and got them for free, nobody is having a £15 quid bath every day that stinks to high heaven and looks like a paint factory explosion are they...surely.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/10/2018 19:15

I prefer bathbakelove.com/the-kitchen/

Gingerrogered · 24/10/2018 19:15

They’re certainly not ethical. Their factory is based in one of the most expensive places in the U.K. to live. They pay low wages which aren’t enough to rent a flat or raise a family. So they rely on transient youth workers who will live in substandard overcrowded housing.

And no twee ‘ we are just like one of your pals’ patronising marketing can make up for that.

theSnuffster · 24/10/2018 19:15

I got a big bottle and a small bottle of snow fairy last Christmas. I still have about a third of the big bottle left. I use it as a shower gel and as a shampoo- I haven't used it every single day, sometimes I like to use different things. But I do think it's lasted really well. I would never buy it for myself though, I love it but I can't justify the price!

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/10/2018 19:16

Also lots of their production is going out of Uk... they are blaming brexit but it was planned way before that.

Buunylover · 24/10/2018 19:17

It sounds expensive but used on a sponge it will last for ages. Plus it makes the whole house smell amazing!.

Yellowbird54321 · 24/10/2018 19:21

Just popped on to say my son was in a very busy Lush christmas shopping last year and actually passed out with the heat and smell (think it must have been sensory overload!), on the way down he took a bowl of red stained water with him (product testing bowl). When he regained consciousness he apparently became slightly hysterical thinking he was bleeding profusely from a head injury Grin

This is my favourite and only Lush anecdote.

pigsDOfly · 24/10/2018 19:23

There's nothing ethical or natural about the horrible stink that emanates from Lush shops.

I have never understood the appeal of their stuff. Certainly wouldn't be paying that sort of price for it.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 24/10/2018 19:32

I always figured the stink was artificially pumped in and around the shop

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 24/10/2018 19:43

Hate lush. I also get a headache as soon as I walk in. My nieces have asked for lush for Christmas, I’d rather buy molton Brown but it’s their choice I guess.

cherish123 · 24/10/2018 19:49

I would not pay that for a cheap-smelling brand. Fair enough when it's a more upmarket brand like l'occitaine, c and e or Molton B.

Cambalamb · 24/10/2018 19:50

Body shop too, very overpriced and no longer unique.

Cambalamb · 24/10/2018 19:50

Luckily I don't shop in LUSH, just walking in can give me a headache from the stench.

BrendasUmbrella · 24/10/2018 19:57

I'm harbouring a grudge against Lush because they discontinued Blackberry bath bomb. Blackberry was pretty much the last tie to CTG (I think?) My last tie to it anyway.

But I have to make an order because DD loves their bath bombs at Christmas. I'm going to keep an eye on the price though. Lush is not a luxury bath/body brand. If their prices reach luxury bath/body brand prices, then DD will have to live without them. The prices they have now are my absolute limit.

But hey, if they're moving production out of the UK, prices may drop next year... right? Hmm

WelcomeToShootingStars · 24/10/2018 20:00

I've been put off them more and more, the spycops thing was the final straw for me. Their pricing is ludicrous, I hate being pounced on in the shop, the quality of what I bought online to avoid being followed around the shop was woeful and the hypocritical bullshit of being eco friendly whilst using palm oil doesn't sit well with me.

I took to instagram to find alternatives and now use Lola's Organic instead.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 24/10/2018 20:03

I've rediscovered Bronnley recently after a recommendation- possibly from MN! I used to think of it as a bit of an old lady brand, but the contemporary range is really good and cheaper than MB or l'occitane. I don't know about their ethics but it smells fresh & luxurious.
