To think LUSH have gone too far?

I used to use Lush products quite often, I loved their soaps and bath bombs etc. I slowly stopped using them because I noticed the prices were ever increasing and pink bathwater loses its novelty when it's costing you £5+. Regardless, I still always went in before Christmas to buy my DM a bottle of Snow Fairy because it's her absolute fave.

I went in yesterday to buy her annual bottle and literally couldn't believe that they were asking £27.95 for the big bottle. That's £28 for a bottle of SOAP!! I even had to check with a staff member that I hadn't misread, she said they'd just put the prices up again. I realise they use natural ingredients and are cruelty free, but for me this still doesn't justify this price.

AIBU to think they've gone too far and you'd have to be crazy to pay that?

But not to all cosmetics. The vast majority were previously or have ingredients that were tested on animals.

Leaping Bunny mark is good. Superdrug cheapest vendor IME.

ConcreteUnderpants · 23/10/2018 13:24

I think you're right, OP.
It's a gift, so get her what she wants, but then move onto less green-washed and more ethical companies.
That's what I've done. Plus I get thrush just looking at the glitter, petal filled bath bombs!

abacucat · 23/10/2018 13:27

And LUSH will have ingredients that were previously tested on animals too.

NannyR · 23/10/2018 13:28

I fell out with them a long time ago. I used to love a shower gel they made called "skinny dip" - a sort of spicy, chocolatey scent, which was lovely and not wildly expensive and they had a shampoo that really suited my hair and smelled great (can't remember the name - something flowery). They discontinued both and recommended me a shampoo that was really thick, in a tub with sea salt, that just tangled up my hair and scratched my scalp and left my hair dull.
About that time they started to sell "gimmicky" stuff, like the ice cube shower gels and putting glitter in everything, whilst discontinuing the really good products that worked well and smelt great but just looked a bit boring. The soaps used to be much more reasonably priced and not as gimmicky.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/10/2018 13:37

Well I certaintly wouldn't pay just shy of £30 for a bottle of bubble bath.
However if people are daft enough to do so that is of course their choice and lookout.
The company is not forcing anyone to buy their products.
If they do go into administration due to their extortionate prices again their look out. The only people I'd feel sorry are the poor souls on shop floor who have no say on the prices.

Gilead · 23/10/2018 13:39

Go away you lot, just put in a bimble order!

GoGoGirl54321 · 23/10/2018 13:46

I love lush products and I have no regrets admitting that I spend around £35 a month in there. I must admit that it is slightly pricey tho. But I just love there products so much 😂

May I suggest you buy a small bottle as they do £5 and £9 bottles. At the end of the day, it’s your money, your choice.

Btw I use there face mask and I get at least 10 uses out of it 😮

havingabadhairday · 23/10/2018 13:48

I like Lush, I don't have problems using many of their products like I do with other brands. It's really nice to be able to use something scented that doesn't make me red and blotchy.

A number of people here have recommended Molton Brown, I've googled and it looks like their products have SLS in, which seems to be one of the things I react to (I have less problems using SLS-free shampoo for example, on the other hand I pay a lot for my shampoo and there are a lot of other things that aren't in it either so it's hard to be completely sure!)

Pinkyyy · 23/10/2018 13:49

GoGoGirl54321 a couple of people have suggested I buy a smaller size, but I think if I'm already buying an overpriced small bottle- I may as well buy an overpriced big one and make my DM happy

You should stock up at the Christmas sale for next year!

JustRichmal · 23/10/2018 14:28

I just wish they would keep the doors shut and keep their smog off the high street. I feel sorry for the staff who have to spend all day in the fumes. If I cannot go near the shop without a feeling of my throat being stripped of its lining, why would I want to put their chemicals on my body or encourage anyone I knew to wear them?

Thanks for the information about TBS and Nestle, that’s really good to hear.

I love Lush products. I pick and choose though. And mostly with the bath bars (we love the milky bar), I slice them up into sections. So I never plonk a whole milky bar in the bath. I get about 5-6 baths out of it. It bubbles up so much, I can't imagine what one bath with one bar would be like.
Lush is ethical and lovely and I am willing to pay for that.
Their shampoo bars are the best! I can't imagine going back to plastic bottles after discovering Lush shampoo bars. They lather up gorgeously and the smells are all divine (the ones I've used anyway). The whole family uses one shampoo bar and they last forever. Conditioner bars as well.
And Ultrabland... never have I known a better facial cleanser. I've been using retinol which is quite harsh and drying, but a lovely massage with Ultrabland cleanser in the morning soothes and softens my flaking skin. You'd hardly notice I'm in the middle of a retinol regime.
I suppose I think YABU. It depends. For me, the ethical aspect of Lush is a big factor. And I really am actively reducing our household plastic consumption as much as possible. This is a big deal for me.

Vixxxy · 23/10/2018 15:01

28 quid for a bottle of soap is ridiculous. I have never actually been in LUSH as the smell of the shops makes me feel really ill and its not somewhere I have ever looked into buying online from tbh, but my mother buys the bath bombs and some random sets for us for xmas. I didn't realise she would be paying stupid prices like that!

LorelaiRoryEmily · 23/10/2018 15:06

OP have a look at Human&Kind shower gels. Amazing!!

Ohyesiam · 23/10/2018 15:06

How can their ingredients be natural with that smell?
I hold my breath when I walk past so i don’t breath that toxic stink.

JustRichmal · 23/10/2018 15:15

Dh's view: "It does stink".

WhiteCoyote · 23/10/2018 15:20

fridgepants there’s hundreds of sellers on Etsy who make sls free shampoo bars.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 23/10/2018 15:30

Btw I use there face mask and I get at least 10 uses out of it

Is your face really, really tiny? Grin

Lush is ethical and lovely

But they're not... they're really not.

There are companies out there with far better products and FAR better ethics and employee care. The kissing campaign was hideous.

I think the shampoo bars are bloody awful. They used to make my hair sticky and tangled.

It obviously still has a few fans, but most people I know have drifted away to places doing the same thing, but better and cheaper and with genuinely sound ethics.

CatOwned · 23/10/2018 15:35

Thanks to this thread I properly researched Natura. They sponsored the coup against Brazil's former president Dilma Rousseff, but hey, at least they're ethical Angry

Bluelady · 23/10/2018 15:37

I must be weird, I love the smell, if they bottled it I'd buy it.

Pinkyyy · 23/10/2018 15:48

Thank you to everyone for all the suggestions! Will definitely look into them for gifts.. for myselfWink

That's fine, but I just wish it were not inflicted on me as I walk down the high street.
Apparently they don't bottle it, but they do sell it in very expensive bar form.

citiesofbismuth · 23/10/2018 17:51

@fridgepants I buy my shampoo bars from wild sage co. They're sls free.
