To think LUSH have gone too far?

I used to use Lush products quite often, I loved their soaps and bath bombs etc. I slowly stopped using them because I noticed the prices were ever increasing and pink bathwater loses its novelty when it's costing you £5+. Regardless, I still always went in before Christmas to buy my DM a bottle of Snow Fairy because it's her absolute fave.

I went in yesterday to buy her annual bottle and literally couldn't believe that they were asking £27.95 for the big bottle. That's £28 for a bottle of SOAP!! I even had to check with a staff member that I hadn't misread, she said they'd just put the prices up again. I realise they use natural ingredients and are cruelty free, but for me this still doesn't justify this price.

AIBU to think they've gone too far and you'd have to be crazy to pay that?

I remember when you could get a bath bomb for £3 and it was a nice little treat. I went in there and they were like £8 recently. I know they’re fun products and everything and times have changed. But you can get lots more for your money elsewhere so it seems a shame. I haven’t used lush for ages now.

www.wild-sage.co.uk/product/handmade-natural-vegan-soap/shampoo-bar-rosemary-lavender

£6 a bar and it lasts several weeks on my short hair.

Llanali · 23/10/2018 18:40

I’m with @Poloshot

I wouldn’t set foot in a LUSH if you paid me. And I wouldn’t use it if it were free.

One of the most hypocritical, outrageously faux ethical companies out there. I’m not buying this picture perfect pro world peace front, sorry, they can con someone else.

And the smell makes me want to heave.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 23/10/2018 19:15

Oh yes, Wild Sage & Co is BRILLIANT. The Frankincense and Shea Balm is unbelievable. I love their stuff.

skybluee · 23/10/2018 20:23

i can't go in because of the smell.
i also cross the street and hold my breath.

if she loves that bubble bath i'd get it.

£28 for 1000ml, a normal shower gel is 250ml so it's four of those.

Lovemusic33 · 24/10/2018 17:50

Lush is a rip off. Luckily I can’t use their products but I have bought snow fairy in the past just to leave in my room to sniff. I can’t go into a lush shop without itching all over and can’t use their bath bombs without getting thrush. No way would I pay almost £30 for a bottle of soap.

BaldricksCoffee · 24/10/2018 17:51

To be honest, if I can smell a shop from two hundred yards away, then I don't go in Grin

Bonnieb168 · 24/10/2018 18:06

I have recently found a shop called Tranquility Cosmetics which I just love! It's only small local business in Denton but it does some fabulous things, similar to Lush but much cheaper !! Its online so might be worth having a look to see if they have a similar product to the expensive Lush version! X

Spriggy · 24/10/2018 18:09

I’m awfully glad I’m allergic to all that smelly stuff and don’t have to pay these extortionate prices for keeping clean 😄

2ManyChoices · 24/10/2018 18:16

I use their moisturiser, tha nameescapes me right now, brain fart, since I’ve been using it it’s gone from £14.95 a pot to £18.95 to £22.95, in the space of just over two years, I love it though, and it does wonders for my skin, but that Emma Hardey stuff might and it’s the same price, I already use that cleanser, they’re pricing themselves up there with the big shot skincare brands, and in my opinion aren’t worthy. I get that their products are ethical and they recycle and support community projects etc, but I could buy a years worth of Estée Lauder for the 4 pots I buy of lush a year!!!

Writersblock2 · 24/10/2018 18:17

Lush makes me so sad these days. I’m an old school Lush fan, and mourn old favourites such as Pineapple Grunt Soap, Potion lotion (omg!) and my favourite fragrance of all time, LadyBoy (from their B Never sister shop). However, I find it so so hard to justify shopping there.

First the staff started to really annoy me. Constantly hounded when you go in, as someone else mentioned. And if you’re a Lush fan you don’t need someone asking if you know how to use something every time you exhale. Its also a lot of fake niceness from very “woke” looking teens who only pause in talking about their selfies/latest social media posts, to give you the huge fake smile and reel off the badly rehearsed questions. Lush used to be genuine in their customer service. It used to be individual. Now it’s bullshit. And for the record, Lush, what about people with social anxieties or autism? Your staff are an absolute nightmare for people like that!

Second thing that pisses me off is the limited edition products. Xmas specials and the like we’re fine; they came back each year. But I’m talking the many products they like to list on their site as exclusive, you find they work for you/you fall in love with whatever unique smell, and then they withdraw them. Absolute nightmare when you have allergies and you’ve found something works for you.

Thirdly, the politics. Fuck off, Lush, you’re a shop. Why would you keep alienating customers? The kissing campaign was absolutely horrific and you’ve not answered that. Do you condone sexual assault on your staff? Apparently you do!

So yeah. I love your stuff, even though it’s stupidly overpriced now. I’m still nursing some older/last Xmas products. But I’m very much trying to find other places (no luck so far; most don’t seem to be as good for me personally) because you’ve turned into a really rubbish business.

Take heed: the women who fell for your shop when you started are getting pissed off. We are the ones with the spending power, not the students.

2ManyChoices · 24/10/2018 18:17

Vanishing cream. Screw you forgetful brain.

PeppyPiggy · 24/10/2018 18:25

Lush was started by my friends parents! we went to school together. They are doing very well. Obviously. Plenty of people down here work for lush in the original office and have their homes filled with lush products. Just ask for stock that is going out of date, most people I know there just give it away!

MsLexic · 24/10/2018 18:29

Actually they use loads of chemical fragrances and their stuff is crap. I wouldn't give tuppence for their junk. Buy some nice handmade vegan soap ! A zillionth of the price.

browneyes77 · 24/10/2018 18:30

I’ve never shopped in Lush. The one by me absolutely stinks that part of the shopping centre out. I wretch as I walk past it because the smell is so strong so have never been able to bring myself to go in, in case I’m overpowered by the fumes Grin

My best friend however, bought me a Lush gift set for my birthday this year (That did smell nice and didn’t destroy my nostrils Grin) and out of curiosity I went online to see how much the set cost. I was amazed at the prices of them for a bath bomb, bubble bar and a lip scrub Shock

So no I don’t think YABU!

MadisonAvenue · 24/10/2018 18:31

Peppy wasn’t it Cosmetics To Go originally? I used to love ordering from them.

GeeksCanBeMumsToo · 24/10/2018 18:34

Even though really expensive, I bought some eye cream because of the natural ingredients and then found it has three different parabens in the small print. I also bought the shampoo bar as thought it would save on plastic, but it came delivered in a box full of those polystyrene peanuts 🙄 Won’t be buying again!

Blueink · 24/10/2018 18:34

An original fan of CTC & later LUSH but shocked by the recent hike in prices which are disproportionate. Now buy the smaller sizes as an occasional treat or for a gift.

dejacqueray · 24/10/2018 18:36

I use Bomb Cosmetics now. I much prefer them to Lush

Spriggy · 24/10/2018 18:37

I’m glad I’m allergic to all that strong smelly stuff must save me a fortune

RudimentalPetal · 24/10/2018 18:40

Top cashback are doing a promo on lush products online. YANBU but this way at least you get some pennies back

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 24/10/2018 18:50

Llanali Says it better than me. I agree with every word.

I wouldn’t set foot in a LUSH if you paid me. And I wouldn’t use it if it were free.

One of the most hypocritical, outrageously faux ethical companies out there. I’m not buying this picture perfect pro world peace front, sorry, they can con someone else.

THEY ARE NOT ETHICAL

lotusbell · 24/10/2018 18:50

@Writersblock2, are you me? I could've written your comment practically word for word. I first used Lush when they were mail order Cosmetics to Go then me and ex hubby were such fans we travelled to Chester, the first shop Lush had up north to buy our goodies. They opened shops in Manchester then Preston and Bolton, even closer which was great. I just can't justify the price anymore. Loved the bubble bar sliced and ballistics but I have lived in a bathless house for 2 years so only get my son an Avobath occasionally when he has a bath down the road at Grandads. Still love a few items but can't justify p&p charges for mail order and the last few times I've gone into town to shop, I've come out empty handed. Lovely but annoying staff and the politics have just taken over every aspect of the shop.

lotusbell · 24/10/2018 18:52

The shop only sale last Christmas wound up a lot of people too

Ilikeknitting · 24/10/2018 18:54

I want a Bentley, but at £85k they’ve gone too far! It’s ridiculous that I can’t afford a decent size car.
Do you see the problem with my problem?
If it’s out of your price range, or more than you’re comfortable paying, that’s nobody else’s problem. I love lush, I’m currently working my way through a bar of Rose soap that cost me £14. Some glow in the dark soap, moisturising bath melts and whoosh shower gel, so I do know they are pricey, but if I couldn’t afford them, I’d not grumble. I like Jo Malone candles, but I don’t buy them, because I think they’re over priced.
It’s not compulsory to buy lush.
