To think LUSH have gone too far?

I used to use Lush products quite often, I loved their soaps and bath bombs etc. I slowly stopped using them because I noticed the prices were ever increasing and pink bathwater loses its novelty when it's costing you £5+. Regardless, I still always went in before Christmas to buy my DM a bottle of Snow Fairy because it's her absolute fave.

I went in yesterday to buy her annual bottle and literally couldn't believe that they were asking £27.95 for the big bottle. That's £28 for a bottle of SOAP!! I even had to check with a staff member that I hadn't misread, she said they'd just put the prices up again. I realise they use natural ingredients and are cruelty free, but for me this still doesn't justify this price.

AIBU to think they've gone too far and you'd have to be crazy to pay that?

Which one are you using Greyhound? I bought the luminous yellow one 9 days ago to go plastic free. It's nearly gone. At £9 a bar I simply can't afford to buy it again. It's on a shelf and not sat in a pool of water.

berniee · 23/10/2018 09:16

@unweavedrainbow a big bottle does not last a year more last around 2 months

TheMythicalChicken · 23/10/2018 09:17

If you want something natural and cruelty-free, try Bloomtown. Their products are lovely.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone I'm not sure you'll convince me that this is a bargain. I'm not familiar with molton brown but if they're extremely expensive I'm not sure they are a good point of comparison

I stopped buying at Lush when they did their spy cops campaign. I've always thought their stuff was overpriced, so only ever bought it for presents, but the ambiguous posters, with no context, really pushed me over the edge.

Sorry £8 a bar,but even so compared to the 2 Euro bar of lavender soap I bought in a French market which is still going strong it's a rip. Soap it is for me in the shower, not Lush soap as I know from experience that doesn't last long either and is £££££s.

hendricksy · 23/10/2018 09:21

Body shop do cruelty free / vegan products for a few pounds . I'm a vegetarian and buy all my make up etc from there . Always discounts too .

Poloshot · 23/10/2018 09:21

I wouldn't use their stuff if it was free.

Moominfan · 23/10/2018 09:22

Well outside my price range. Body shop always have really good offers. Never pay full price

Pinkyyy · 23/10/2018 09:22

WeeDangerousSpike I am not aware of this campaign but looking at the poster, it's shockingShock

I had no problem at all with the Spycops campaign which has little to do with this thread.

EK36 · 23/10/2018 09:23

I was just looking at lush stuff for Xmas presents, and gasped at the prices too! Too expensive for me now. Have been recommended a local hand made bath bomb & soap shop that's vegan. It's called Olivia Thomas based in coventry. They are much cheaper and they do deliveries too!

Loopytiles · 23/10/2018 09:23

All the other brands mentioned by posters test on animals.

Superdrug has a lot of own brand products that are not tested on animals, I get lots from there.

Have boycotted Lush due to the Spycops campain but am missing the soaps.

dapplegrey · 23/10/2018 09:23

I agree weedangerous.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 23/10/2018 09:27

It's all well and good people coming on this thread stating they would never use it and it's not as ethical as they say it is but the OP's mother likes this product and for the size of the bottle and for how long it will last it is not that expensive.

If you do not want to buy it then you could ask her if there is something else she wanted but if that's all she wants for Christmas then I'm not sure what else you can do?

londonrach · 23/10/2018 09:28

No idea why people go into this polical shop. Its uses palm oil and is overpriced. I wouldnt use any of their items even if free due to their recent advertising. No idea how anyone doesnt get a head ache when you walk in due to the smell. Each to their own. I love my french bars of soap from the markey in france which work out at less than 2 euro a bar. Sadly i bought enough for two years and run out now.

Almondio · 23/10/2018 09:30

I went in once to look at the shampoo as had heard great things.

However a combination of the chemicals in their products and the price meant I left without making a purchase, headed to Holland and Barrett and bought SLS and paraben-free products at a fraction of Lush prices. I don't get the Lush thing, apart from it has a very clever marketing plan.

Bellabutterfly2016 · 23/10/2018 09:30

My best friend loves lush and buys it for all her family. We were Christmas shopping the other day and she bought 4 bath bombs for her Christmas Eve boxes and then some other bits, £50 odd quid later!!!!!!

I couldn't believe how much they were!!! It's not a shop I go in really and wouldn't be at those prices either. There are much cheaper alternatives about and nicer luxury products; £27 for bubble bath does seem a lot - I'm more of your 3-4-2 at boots person!!!!!

Valasca · 23/10/2018 09:31

They generously donated a tonne of money to a local wildlife hospital in my area. Can’t say Molton or Clarins have done the same.

I will happily support and pay for a luxury product whose company directly donates locally. Go team Lush!

Starlive23 · 23/10/2018 09:31

Ugh, totally agree OP. They smell absolutely beautiful but the cost just makes my bloody eyes water!!

I've never been able to find anywhere that sells products anywhere near as nice but just can't justify the cost ☹️

Pinkyyy · 23/10/2018 09:31

My DM will have absolutely no idea about any of their politics (neither do I if I'm honest) but it's what she likes and she doesn't ask for anything ever, with that being said if she knew the price she would tell me not to buy it

Button I'm using the Snow Fairy one - think it's a Limited Edition.

Thesearmsofmine · 23/10/2018 09:34

YANBU I have been a Lush customer for around 20 years and I also used to pick up bath bombs for my dc regularly but they have become overpriced and while i didn’t mind spending £10 on three bath bombs, now you are looking at £15+. That combined with their anti police campaign and their staff who last time I went in were sat posing for Instagram photos instead of working means I don’t go anymore.

I buy from Bomb Cosmetics now and some other small businesses.

AwdBovril · 23/10/2018 09:34

One of the things that really shocked me about Lush is that they still use mica in many of their products. Despite knowing that it's mined by children in dangerous conditions, in 3rd world countries. Over a decade after this came to light, and they've yet to reformulate their products to remove it, find an alternative, or find better ways of obtaining mica.
