To think LUSH have gone too far?

I used to use Lush products quite often, I loved their soaps and bath bombs etc. I slowly stopped using them because I noticed the prices were ever increasing and pink bathwater loses its novelty when it's costing you £5+. Regardless, I still always went in before Christmas to buy my DM a bottle of Snow Fairy because it's her absolute fave.

I went in yesterday to buy her annual bottle and literally couldn't believe that they were asking £27.95 for the big bottle. That's £28 for a bottle of SOAP!! I even had to check with a staff member that I hadn't misread, she said they'd just put the prices up again. I realise they use natural ingredients and are cruelty free, but for me this still doesn't justify this price.

AIBU to think they've gone too far and you'd have to be crazy to pay that?

You can get a lot of different shower gels etc, in Superdrug which are their own brand and are cruelty free. They are a fraction of the cost of Lush items.

I think Lush its too expensive and too scented. I once had a bad rash from one of their moisturizers. I wont pay £7.00 etc for a bar of soap these days its just too much.

I don't particularly like Lush for the headachey smell, pushy salespeople and some of their campaigns, but I think they are more ethical than a lot of cosmetic brands. And it's worth reading their palm oil policy rather than just believing that they don't care about palm oil because someone on MN says so uk.lush.com/article/does-lush-use-palm-oil. If you don't want to take Lush's own word for it, Ethical Consumer rates them well for their palm oil policy, though there are a few lower ratings for other things: www.ethicalconsumer.org/company-profile/lush-cosmetics-ltd

dementedma · 24/10/2018 20:09

another former customer now priced out sadly!

FrigideBarjot · 24/10/2018 20:15

I have never been in a Lush shop. The horrible synthetic smell that emanates from their shops totally puts me off.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/10/2018 20:18

Has no one hear heard of the £ shop.

I live In there. In my neck of the woods Liverpool we used to have a 50p shop. I don't know why it closed down.
I used to have a field day in thereGrin

Geraniumpink · 24/10/2018 20:25

I loved them when they were CTG. I still miss the champagne bath bombs scent and the rose Turkish delight body stuff. I’ve shopped there less and less over the years as prices have gone up and up. I buy my face cream from the little green company and occasionally Neal’s Yard for soap. If anyone can recommend a descent non animal tested ginger perfume I would be very grateful!

huggybear · 24/10/2018 20:33

I'm shocked at 1000ml lasting a year! We use a 250ml bottle a week here?!

Fresta · 24/10/2018 20:40

LEAVES SHOP

Just why do they do it? Hmm

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/10/2018 20:50

Lol at body shop being expensive. Can get a 750ml showergel for less than a fiver if you time it right.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/10/2018 20:52

I have to admit the really young sales people back off when you say you have been using the stuff on and off since the late 90s.... some weren’t even born then.

Bettalina · 24/10/2018 20:53

A fiver?

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/10/2018 20:54

Lol time it when you can get a coupon code that can be used on sale items.

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 24/10/2018 20:55

Comparing Bentley and lush?

Yeah, right.

Strangely enough, DH bought me a gift last night : a LUSH shampoo bar, which are actually my faves but haven't bought in yonks due to the price. Used it this morning, very pleased. Hair is shiny.

I wouldn't buy it for myself though. Even DH agreed they are dear.

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 24/10/2018 20:56

You know the trick to deter the staff, don't you?

Just say you used to work there, and know all the products and all their sales tactics, therefore

Fstar · 24/10/2018 21:00

Sorry if mentioned but what about the naked one? uk.lush.com/products/christmas/snow-fairy-3

Im sure i got it in a snow fairy gift set last year. Agree though with prices, too expensive now

indieshuffle · 24/10/2018 21:03

Madness. You can get organic and properly eco products for less than that.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/10/2018 21:04

Some very good ideas there, skeleton and Tomorrow ... shame I won't be going back to use them Wink

mrpoopybutthole · 24/10/2018 21:28

EK36 another vote here for Olivia Thomas, in Coventry. I've got one of their candles burning right now, smells amazing, long lasting scent & fantastic price. They also sell those Bomb(?) bath bombs, which I've bought from a few other places. As good a Lush bath bombs but cheaper

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/10/2018 21:32

I won’t be back either

luckycat007 · 24/10/2018 21:44

They are a total rip off - as others have said if I wanted to spend I'd go to somewhere with better products, but some of it is ok just not worth ££

Ellesbelles04 · 24/10/2018 21:45

I used to work at Lush when a student, particular products that I genuinely loved were veganese conditioner, ultimate shine shampoo, bathos bubble bar, reincarnate shampoo, aqua mirablis....

I found that many of the products with better essential oils in became discontinued and a lot of the scents became very sweet.

When you work there (I don’t know if this is still the same) but it was based on active sales and pay related reward structures. The threat of l mystery shoppers meant you had to approach people within a certain time etc.

Sadly, I can confirm that my experience working at two different lush stores showed a bullying culture from store managers, instances of time worked but no additional pay, poor health and safety concerning lifting and access to appropriate equipment.

I buy a few things from there such as the henna, but the prices for bath bombs in particular are too high... it’s not that hard to make your own!

Will certainly look up the other companies on here- for shampoo and soap we should all be making an effort to go plastic free.

Pinkyyy · 24/10/2018 21:51

I'm also not sure that the Bentley comparison is relevant. They are not out of my price range, I can afford their products but my thinking they are a waste of money has been thoroughly confirmed by this thread

roegreensoap.co.uk thus is a small family company every thing done the right way no parbens etc even made goat milk soap specially for my eczema prone daughter. They also make gift sets ..body shop is not as etnical as it used to be and neither is Holland and bar

Leapfrog44 · 24/10/2018 22:26

Far too expensive yes but can't believe people are recommended chemical loaded Molton Brown as an alternative. That IS a rip off.!!

Lush is at least ethical and totally non-toxic which is well worth paying more for.
