I like horror, but I’m easily freaked and stuff stays with me. I’ve read reviews of this and they’re either very dramatic or this film has made people puke and pass out! I know they said this about The. Exorcist which didn’t freak me (bar the crucifix scene, I had a religious upbringing!)

Has anyone seen it and if so, is it really horrendous? I’m still freaked by the little brother flying at his brother’s window after being turned into a vampire in Salem’s Lot!

I stuck it out until the end. Not sure why. It's OK, but I really don't understand why anyone found any of it remotely scary.

I also think they have a nerve saying "Based on the novel by Shirley Jackson". The aspects of the book included in the series could take up one side of a sheet of A5 in very large handwriting.

Agree with other poster. The original film version The Haunting is a) far, far, far superior; b) relatively close to the novel; c) more unnerving (which is different to scary); and best of all d) only lasts two hours.

HiHoToffee · 06/11/2018 08:42

First 2 episodes were very confusing, after that it got better. I enjoyed it but didn't think it was fantastic or remotely scary.

Apparently there was an alternative ending.

Sparklesocks · 06/11/2018 08:48

I didn’t find it that scary, but i liked the story and the character explorations - it felt more about grief and family dynamics than a ghost story.

differentnameforthis · 06/11/2018 09:01

If you like horror, you'll be fine.

There are jump scares, but not as much as I anticipated going by the reviews. They are also somewhat predictable.

I an rewatching it, as there are things that I missed that are not always obvious. The drift between past and present is good too, and plenty of tears to be shed!

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 06/11/2018 09:11

well i jumped out of my skin last night for the first time, that might have been episode 8

however I think it probably was not the bit I think made everyone else jump :o

Don't read the next bit for spoilers maybe Ep7 maybe Ep8 the chandelier bit made me jump

I have the last one to watch tonight.

I found out about the secret ghosts after watching the first 4 or 5 and found all that did was mean I was scanning the background all the time, to see if I could spot one.
I do this all the time in films with mirrors/big windows/shadows...look for the crew in the reflections.

Mangoo · 06/11/2018 09:19

I really really enjoyed this series. It wasn't at all puke or pass out scary but it was intriguing and a good watch I thought.

One of of those that I couldn't wait to watch at the end of the day.

Alexandra2018 · 06/11/2018 09:23

I'm watching, my oh is bored ready to give up! I like scary stuff I'm not scared yet it's episode 6. Just had afew oh no what's that!

beefchowmein · 06/11/2018 09:26

I watched it after seeing all the rave reviews. I found it fairly scary in parts but not ‘pass out/puke’ scary Confused

Overall I enjoyed it but wasn’t particularly overwhelmed and wouldn’t rewatch

LatinForTelly · 06/11/2018 09:55

Sorry to butt in, I am too much of a wuss to watch, but which bit/episode was shown on gogglebox last Friday? Don't want to give details in case of spoilers but was v scary, I imagine ending in a jump (I had slow-forwarded it by that point, to get rid of noise and make less scary!) Is it all like that? How can you lot not be scared?!

HiHoToffee · 06/11/2018 10:59

I wouldn't rely on gogglebox to gauge the scare factor, they jump at the slightest movements Grin

There are hardly any jump scares in it so it is not really scary in that sense, it mostly a ghost story.

Was it the scene with the little boy under the bed? I don't think it had a jump but can't really remember.

PumpkinKitty82 · 06/11/2018 11:12

It’s no where near as bad as some reviews are saying .
There are some jumpy bits and it’s definitely creepy but people vomiting? Wow.. really? Doubtful.
It’s very good and I enjoyed the whole thing

TwilightSparkle18 · 06/11/2018 11:13

I've just finished watching the last episode and its the best thing I've watched in ages!

I totally enjoyed it and I personally don't think it was overly spooky but thats just my opinion, I appreciate others may be a bit freaked out by it.

LatinForTelly · 06/11/2018 11:18

Hi @HiHoToffee, thanks, yes the tall figure in black and the boy under the bed. Really spooky to me but then stretched proportions often are.

How did that end - if not too much of a spoiler?

I only saw bits of nightmare on elm street (I think) through gogglebox and it was the bit with his long arms scraping on the fence which frightened me.

HiHoToffee · 06/11/2018 12:07

Nothing really happened in the end, it was more like an introduction to a ghost, just a spooky scene. (I found it quite funny but appreciate others would find it scary)

Give it a try and keep a cushion to hide behind handy

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 06/11/2018 14:30

Mmmm episode 8 wasn't as bad as I'd built it up in my head to be and I'm finding episode 9 isn't holding my attention.

TwllBach · 06/11/2018 15:26

I think I’m the last/penultimate episode and have really enjoyed it. I have found moments scary but agree with a PP about it being more sad than anything. I think it’s a great story about family relationships and the episode with Nell in the house was pretty fantastic I thought. I also think the actors, the female ones in particular, are excellent. The facial expressions, the longing inthe voices of Nell and Shirley in particular.

I also LOVE the mums wardrobe. She has some beautiful clothes GrinGrin

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 06/11/2018 15:31

It was fabulous up until the ending....that was lame. Like this terrifying house was suddenly all warm and cuddly.

PoisonousSmurf · 06/11/2018 15:33

Then ending was annoying. It perpetuates the 'myth', that we are reunited in another life.
This makes it a dangerous film to watch if you are missing someone Sad

kaytee87 · 06/11/2018 15:35

I've just finished it. Was quite good, a little creepy and jumpy but didn't give me nightmares.
Might not have watched it by myself though

ghostyslovesheets · 06/11/2018 15:37

it was much more sad than it was scary - I cried a bit watching it - very well done

expatinspain · 06/11/2018 15:41

I don't find anything scary and I found this pretty scary. It is very jump scary, but the bent neck lady stayed with me and I was freaking out a bit going for a wee at night in the dark. I'm usually someone who watches horror films alone with the lights off and never gets scared. I can't understand the people saying they weren't scared!!

JellieEllie · 06/11/2018 15:43

I watch horror movies alone all the time and really enjoy the thrill however this did frighten me.
It's not so much scary but more creepy and jumpy at times. The bent neck lady and the floating man were the worst parts for me.
Definitely worth a watch though it's extremely good.

Devillanelle · 06/11/2018 15:57

I turned it off halfway through the first episode because I found the LOUD NOISES so irritating.

kaytee87 · 06/11/2018 15:59

@ghostyslovesheets it was quite sad, I cried at the end.

Jlynhope · 06/11/2018 16:00

This one one of the best shows I've ever seen. It's not just horror it's a brilliant drama.
