I like horror, but I’m easily freaked and stuff stays with me. I’ve read reviews of this and they’re either very dramatic or this film has made people puke and pass out! I know they said this about The. Exorcist which didn’t freak me (bar the crucifix scene, I had a religious upbringing!)

Has anyone seen it and if so, is it really horrendous? I’m still freaked by the little brother flying at his brother’s window after being turned into a vampire in Salem’s Lot!

I binge watched this in two sittings and loved it! It’s a bit scary but I wasn’t traumatised and it didn’t keep me awake at night! Oh and I watched it on my own!

codenameduchess · 20/10/2018 21:53

I'm on episode 8, I love it!
A couple of jumps but honestly it's more drama than scary. I find it refreshing that it's not just 10 episode of ghosts jumping out, there's a great story and properly fleshed out characters, and unlike AHS it's not just weird for the sake of it.

The acting is brilliant and as pps have said the casting is spot on! The resemblance is uncanny.

I do want to know more about the backstory and am holding out for season 2 for that.

RapunzelsRealMom · 20/10/2018 22:04

I'm on ep.6 too. I was SO SCARED to start watching it. I'm a real wimp - scared of being scared iykwim.

This is not scary at all! There are a couple of jumpy bits but honestly, it's more silly than scary.

I am really enjoying it though. Partly because I feel a bit hard for not being scared!!

I love the family relationship issues and feel for the characters.

Give it a go

StepMug · 20/10/2018 22:04

After the first episode, I couldn’t believe the reviews either. I thought it was spooky but couldn’t see how people were vomiting with fear.

Not sure what changed but something has spooked me about it and haven’t slept properly for 3 nights now, jumping all the time and just generally feeling on edge after a few related nightmares.

Brilliant series though, just think I wound myself up. It wouldn’t stop me watching a second series.

Howdoyoudoit31 · 20/10/2018 22:07

Watched episode one and couldn’t get into it

RubaDubMum89 · 20/10/2018 22:07

Honestly OP, it's not bad at all. I've only episode 10 left to watch and, if I'm brutally honest I'm a bit disappointed. I read the reviews about folks passing out etc and thought 'finally, a decent horror series!' but really, I think it's a little pants.

The story lines good and very engrossing, but it's not scary at all, a little jumpy at times yes, but I'm sure you'll be fine!

EdWinchester · 20/10/2018 22:08

People were puking and passing out?

That’s bloody ridiculous. Nothing is that scary.

It’s a very good drama with bits that try to make you jump.

FrangipaniBlue · 20/10/2018 22:09

Glad I saw this thread.....

DH away overnight on a stag night and I was going to watch a few episodes after DS goes to bed - maybe not!!!!!

Deepbreathsbabe · 20/10/2018 22:09

I finished episode 5 about 10 minutes ago. It's good, pretty creepy and jumpy. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, however I do have to hide behind a cushion or DH every now and again.

Claricestarling1 · 20/10/2018 22:12

It’s excellent, I’ve binge watched the entire thing in a few days 😂 agree as pp have said that it’s jumpy in some places but nothing too extreme at all. It’s so well done, best series I’ve seen in ages 👍

Sammymommy · 20/10/2018 22:12

Puke and pass out??? Naaaaah. It was slightly scary. More sad than scary. And I get scared easily. It the haunted version of this is us.

Deepbreathsbabe · 20/10/2018 22:15

@PoxAlert one small little mention of abuse, but nothing major.

wineandwhine · 20/10/2018 22:15

I can't imagine how sensitive people must be to throw up or pass out.

It's a family drama with spooky elements. A few jump scares and classic horror moments, can be very tense but also cerebral and with a great storyline that has heart.

It's This Is Us: Horror Edition.

Watch it with the lights on but do watch it. It's wonderful.

wineandwhine · 20/10/2018 22:16

There's no over the top gore or horror just for the sake of horror. Everything feeds into the plot and not all the ghosts are actual spooky 'house' ghosts. Some are metaphorical (which doesn't make them less scary but they're very much less BAM HERE'S A GHOST AND SOME SCARY MUSIC style).

OneStepMoreFun · 20/10/2018 22:17

Wow. I watched about 10 mins of the first episode and had to turn over. So creepy.

cantquitebelieveit12 · 20/10/2018 22:22

It depends what scares you I think. I find ghosts, things that go bump in the night much scarier then serial killers or blood. I watched 3 episodes & couldn’t sleep as too spooky for me. It’s very good though although I can’t imagine anyone throwing up.

LuluJakey1 · 20/10/2018 22:28

'TheOud* No, not Susan Hill, an American author called Jacqueling something. I think it was written in the 1960s originally. Apparently the series isn't much like the book at all.
I liked the stuff about the family-thought it was well written and the child actors were great.

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 20/10/2018 22:43

I love horror and was really disappointed after the reviews, it's hard to get into because it keeps jumping between different times and is shot so dark, even the daytime scenes are dark.

Maelstrop · 20/10/2018 22:49

No spoilers, please! I’m on episode 2, had a few hide behind my hands moments.

Keel · 20/10/2018 22:50

The book was written by Shirley Jackson. I've not watched the Netflix version but been told it's very different from the novel. There was a sixties film of the novel called The Haunting of Hill House with Claire Bloom in. That one was really creepy, atmospheric chills rather than the cgi crap used nowadays.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/10/2018 22:51

I stopped watching horrors decades ago as I'm a proper scaredy cat - I can frighten myself going down to the loo at night.

Just watched episode 1, not at all scary

AlphaBravo · 20/10/2018 22:52

Episode 1. No scarier than the shock factor in the Grudge. Load of crap tbh.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/10/2018 22:58

I almost didn’t watch it because of the stupid reviews.

It’s good, sad but really not too scary.

mydogishot · 20/10/2018 23:00

Episode 1.

Quite dull but watchable for 53 minutes then quite good cgi happens.

Ninoo25 · 20/10/2018 23:11

I’ve seen it, it’s great but very spooky. Do not watch alone!
