I like horror, but I’m easily freaked and stuff stays with me. I’ve read reviews of this and they’re either very dramatic or this film has made people puke and pass out! I know they said this about The. Exorcist which didn’t freak me (bar the crucifix scene, I had a religious upbringing!)

Has anyone seen it and if so, is it really horrendous? I’m still freaked by the little brother flying at his brother’s window after being turned into a vampire in Salem’s Lot!

Keel I was mystified by the posts referring to a series, I had no idea they had done such a thing. As you say the original was written by Shirley Jackson and was a very well written story, but the original film, which was just The Haunting, was frankly far scarier than the series sounds to be.

The creepiness starts fairly low key but builds up to some moments you think "If I was her I would have soiled myself several times over by now". Far better value for money imo Halloween Grin

I binge watched up to episode 6, you need to persist with it as the first two episodes are very confusing (I needed subtitles on to fully understand), glad I persevered as it's very good

twoforluck · 20/10/2018 23:28

Currently in bed on mumsnet because im too scared to go sleep after watching 🤣🤣 definitely no puking or passing out though!!!

Owletterocks · 20/10/2018 23:46

I enjoy a good spooky film and I did find this quite scary. Worse I think because it is so drawn out over 10 episodes. Normally I will watch a good horror and have a while to get over it but wanting to know what happens I have found myself watching it frequently so I feel like I am constantly on edge 😂. Didn’t pass out or vomit tho, jumped out of my skin a couple of times and had trouble sleeping 🙈

Deepbreathsbabe · 21/10/2018 00:32

In my previous post I stated that I had no sleepless nights over it. I take that back after the last episode I watched tonight. Hence why it's now half past midnight, I'm awake on MN and listening to 90s love songs on Spotify.

AnnabelleLecter · 21/10/2018 01:24

Not scary enough for me and DH.
Netflix seem to over hype certain stuff and we've been disappointed more than once.
Like the rentaghost comments Halloween Grin

OliviaStabler · 04/11/2018 09:42

I found it got scarier as it went along. Worth watching though.

I found paranormal activity worse.

Mulberry72 · 04/11/2018 09:45

I found it weird rather than scary!

Bit disappointing to be honest, I was looking forward to hiding behind a cushion.

But, no.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 04/11/2018 09:47

I found it scary but not the sort of scary that stopped me sleeping.

I binge watched it on my own and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Eliza9917 · 04/11/2018 09:53

I was very disappointed with the ending/last episode.

Sidge · 04/11/2018 10:08

I’ve watched two espisodes and found it quite dull.

Might persevere. Might not.

The people reportedly puking and passing out obviously don’t get out much.

Stubbornuincorn · 04/11/2018 10:53

I found it quite scary and I’m not normally affected by horror shows/films.

The scariest part for me was in episode 8 when both me and DP actually shrieked Grin

I enjoyed it though.

iklboo · 04/11/2018 10:57

I've seen scarier episodes of Rainbow Grin

I enjoyed it and it was well done but I'm guessing the 'puking & passing out' we're exaggerating or drama llamas. And the ending was a bit of a let down.

MsHopey · 04/11/2018 10:59

Watched in all on the day it was released 😳
Stayed up late to get it finished.
Not scary, a bit spooky and interesting and I'd say it's worth a watch.

WhoWants2Know · 04/11/2018 11:06

Interesting and sad. There were a couple of jumps and a couple of "ewwwww" moments, especially in the last episode. Nothing major

bershetmelon · 04/11/2018 11:30

I've really wanted to watch this but the clips on gogglebox have put me off a bit. Can anyone tell me do they think it's more or less scary than American horror story? That didn't particularly bother me. I think I need to put my big girl pants on and watch it as it's my overactive imagination that's stopping me atm

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 04/11/2018 11:31

It's really good but not too scary.

I just want to also point out that the vomiting tweet that all the papers are referring to is really misleading. The person said something along the lines of 'loving this series! So creepy I want to scare-vomit in excitement'. It was a light hearted comment.

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 04/11/2018 11:34

Found it, I was way off with the wording but you get my point.

The Haunting of Hill House
iklboo · 04/11/2018 11:35

It's much less scary than American Horror Story.

littlepeas · 04/11/2018 11:41

There is also a 1990’s adaptation called The Haunting with Catherine Zeta Jones and Owen Wilson in. I used to work in the hotel that the original 1960’s version was filmed in!

RollaBowlaBall · 04/11/2018 11:55

It is scary until you see the monsters. That ruins it as it breaks the suspense.

If you can watch walking dead you’ll be fine with this.

I really enjoyed the story, but it wasn’t that scary.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 04/11/2018 11:57

The 1990s version was awful, but (imo) the '60s adaptation holds up really well. I rewatched it recently and it's still creepy.

The Netflix series is pretty good. I'd agree more sad than scary, but it's very watchable - the ending was a bit disappointing though.

OliviaStabler · 04/11/2018 12:19

I remember that film (1990's) and really enjoyed it. Beautiful house although I know the inside was a sound stage.

RibbonAurora · 04/11/2018 13:01

We just finished watching last night, slow build up, creeping horror, chilling and very sad. The 'real' ghosts are scarier in the shadows than when they reveal themselves front and center, a couple of jump out of your skin moments but the true horror is in the psychological build up focused on the fears and traumas of the family members, they were torturing themselves and each other as much being tortured by the house iykwim. I thought it was cast well and the way they tied seemingly disparate events and timelines together very clever.

Felt a little let down by the ending but, on reflection, it was bittersweet, a hollow victory of sorts as these people are still horribly scarred by their past and I think will never truly get over it. The tragedies they suffered, the horrors they experienced mean it will never be a completely happy-ever-after ride into a golden sunset. And Hill House is still there - watching, waiting, in the night, in the dark.

Bishalisha · 04/11/2018 13:04

I think I know what you’re talking about and I nearly fell off the bed I jumped so hard!

I was terrified but in a massive baby
