To be saddened by some posters on here

looneymoons · 20/10/2018 21:01

I'm hoping these posters are just the minority on here and in real life, but it really saddens me to read incredibly nasty posts on some threads. Threads where the OP is only giving us a snippet of their lives and where they're looking for a bit of advice on here.

In real live would these people actually behave like this to someone in their hour of need?

Do people not think that the OP may be depressed and that nasty comments could be something that pushes them over the edge? Do they even care?

Please give me some faith in humanity and tell me that these posters are, thankfully, a rarity.

@juells Ahh! thanks for that.I'll try and remember revise/advise verb! very good.

Chalkhillblu3 · 20/10/2018 21:46

I think there's a lot of hilarity, mixed in with some really vulnerable people asking for help. It's hard to snap between the two.

yabu-assholes are way beyond epidemic. you could just reaffirm youre rightness by comparing self to some of the jumpt up pre-judgey misinterpreted feministasista box ticker unempathic smartarserdry venom...or ...step on over it?sno easy eh

I think it IS the point.

Willow2017 · 20/10/2018 21:48

Silentisla
So we should all be chased off mn where we have made friends amd are able to give and recieve support by a bunch of nasty, viscious people?

Think you are missing the whole point of Mn.

bigballss · 20/10/2018 21:49

I posted once and have vowed to never do it again because of the abuse I received

Tinkobell · 20/10/2018 21:51

Dislike the preachers and the snipey "must have the last worders"

SilentIsla · 20/10/2018 21:51

I think some of the posts in this thread make pretty unpleasant reading.

Whut? Grin
No, seriously. No idea what that’s supposed to mean, and I translate foreign languages for a living.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 20/10/2018 21:53

Do those of you dismayed by the nastiness report every single time?

I don't get these threads. Say something on the thread itself as soon as you see someone being horrible or report it to MNHW.

I have to say though as much as there's someone being a cow there's many more posters being supportive, listening and being kind.

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 20/10/2018 21:53

And now I’ve been mean on the internet. Mumsnet is RUINING me.

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 20/10/2018 21:56

GreatDuck I often am about to pull them up on it, then I think, no, they want the attention so I’m not going to give it to them. I think being ignored must be so much more painful for them.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 20/10/2018 21:58

I think we live in volatile times - and this volatility is reflected in our interactions with others. Put anonymity into the mix, and it becomes an exercise in dealing with the very worst in people.

I agree. What I’ve also noticed though is how women are being told that abusive behaviour from a partner is their fault. Last week someone had a wok thrown across the room at them and something similar today. More posters than not said that they deserved it.

WetWang · 20/10/2018 22:00

Evening gentleman are you enjoying yourselves slagging off Mumsnet ?

ZanyMobster · 20/10/2018 22:02

Greatduck - sometimes it is not serious enough to report though, doesn't mean the comment isn't unkind or rude though. I'm not sure I understand some of the nastiness on this thread either. Why is it ok to be nasty for no reason just because it's on the internet. I genuinely don't believe that is what MN was intended for.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure we've all been snarky at times, sometimes things hit a nerve for sure but to purposely target a poster just for the sake of it just seems so spiteful.

ZanyMobster · 20/10/2018 22:03

WetWang - what????

LizzieBennettDarcy · 20/10/2018 22:04

I've been ripped to shreds a few times after posting a comment, and I've toughened up to it now. These people must be very angry and unhappy in their lives to be so vile to people they've never even met. So I remember that when someone has said something to make me feel stupid, and don't let it get under my skin.

OlennasWimple · 20/10/2018 22:08

A study has shown that trolls are unpleasant people in RL too

There are a lot of mean people out there

MsNowtyBach · 20/10/2018 22:09

Try and imagine them in real life, I usually summon an idea of someone that is unflattering to say the least.

Do you think happy, successful, fulfilled people rip people to shreds on MN? No, they do not.

VladmirsPoutine · 20/10/2018 22:09

Whilst I do think some posters can get carried away with being behind their keyboard therefore essentially anonymous and say things they wouldn't actually in real life, I think that lately MN have become a bit too trigger happy with entire thread deletions.

I'm not talking about troll threads as such but more the silencing of debate; I have noticed this particularly within the realms of trans discussions and the GRA threads.

Although wording (of a thread) is very important and often the only barricade between an OP and a barrage of abuse it's a very fine line. For example today a thread which would have drawn out thoughtful discussion was rightfully deleted because the OP started out setting a reasonable argument then hopped, jumped and landed straight into racist provocation.
