To ask what one thing you’ve done to a new kitchen that you can’t live without

Finally planning our first kitchen and looking for ideas from people who’ve done it before - What’s the best thing you put in or chose in your kitchen? (Or indeed, the worst)

Wok cooker on the hob. Genius.

Madbengalmum · 18/10/2018 20:26

Have to say living with a pull out tall drawer became increasingly irritating, i would Never have one again. No to a quooker tap too, pain in the arse, often broken.

However, walk in fridge is the way to go. As is a steam oven, and induction hob as so easy to clean.

Roussette · 18/10/2018 20:28

Induction is so so clean. So instant. You just wipe over after cooking and it's spotless. Ours is set into the granite without any edge so it's almost invisible. And induction cooks best steaks ever!

Watto1 · 18/10/2018 20:32

Our kitchen is the size of a postage stamp. I love our high level cupboards that go all the way up to the ceiling and our Neff Hide and Slide oven where the door slides under the oven when you open it. No more bruised shins!

GruffaloStick · 18/10/2018 20:42

I've always wanted a pull out larder *sigh
So envious of planning a new kitchen

Induction hob has been a revelation for me along with a dishwasher

BambooPlate · 18/10/2018 20:43

Watching with interest Wine

KC225 · 18/10/2018 20:43

Dish washer and indution hob on an island.

Ta1kinpeace · 18/10/2018 20:45

Triple pop up socket in my island
so I can use mixers etc or charge phones or pop it down and ave clear space

Iseesheep · 18/10/2018 20:50

Neff ovens, the large hob and extractor. Very expensive but so worth it. Absolutely love mine!

Drawers not cupboards under the work tops.

Sliding floor to ceiling cupboard. Holds so much stuff!

Slidey bin cupboards.

Broom cupboard.

Corian work tops with moulded double sink and drainer. Contrary to popular belief it doesn't stain and looks fabulous. Don't fit a Quooker with that though!

Integrated everything. It's so clean and tidy with it all hidden away.

After living with other people's kitchens for 20 years i spent a long time working out what I don't want so I've gone all out to make mine perfect for me. I adore my new kitchen!

ScienceIsTruth · 18/10/2018 20:52

Just designed/built my kitchen & I really love :

Big island

All pull-out drawers rather than shelves (even in the ones that look like cupboards)

Deep pan drawers under hob

Boiling water tap

Pantry (had one built & tiled, so it's cool)

2 ovens at mid height (one steam and one with pyrolytic cleaning)

Corner cupboards with kidney shaped pull out

Corner wall cupboards with glass carousel

Lots of inserts to organise the drawer space too.

BirdsAndBlips · 18/10/2018 20:53

DH and I are both very tall and our kitchen counter is 98cm, it's THE best decision we made, ever. Also there's a space on the island for kids to sit and draw / chat while I cook.

stclair · 18/10/2018 20:59

Spend as much as you can afford on quality carcases (I think they are called?), fittings, door/drawer finishes etc. Ours still look good 11 years on.

ScienceIsTruth · 18/10/2018 21:01

Also, quartz worktop and pop up sockets in island with usb ports built in

SputnikBear · 18/10/2018 21:01

Agree with pull out larder, bin cupboard, flexi tap with sprayer on the end, double oven, pop up sockets, dishwasher, wine fridge and carousels in cupboards.

I’d add a double sink, lights inside drawers and cupboards, double drawers where the internal drawer slides back to reveal a deeper drawer beneath, and a breakfast cupboard. I LOVE my breakfast cupboard!

Screaminginsidemeagain · 18/10/2018 21:05

Boiler tap

BlackCatsRule88 · 18/10/2018 21:08

I really love my shallow drawer under the oven and deep pan drawer, and cupboard built around boiler for aesthetic reasons. Originally my units were on two walls in a mm “L” shape, they are now in a “U” shape but the one thing I should have spent money on was making sure there were additional plug sockets on the new wall of units.

anunseemlylovefordustin · 18/10/2018 21:10

Quooker tap and a double pantry cupboard!

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 18/10/2018 21:13

Haven't rtft but when we were planning our kitchen the guy pointed out that a) don't forget a bin, lots of people forget to designate a space to keep a bin and b) think about your triangle for cooking which is fridge to oven to hob - don't want it too spread out or it'll be a pain when trying to quickly grab something out the fridge!
I love my pull out larder unit too, can access it from both sides so things don't get lost!

Celestia26 · 18/10/2018 21:14

Dishwasher
Pull out larder
Soft close drawers
Under cupboard lighting

cochineal7 · 18/10/2018 21:14

Getting rid of the washing machine (moved to bathroom area). That was the best thing for the kitchen.

Singlebutmarried · 18/10/2018 21:28

Massive fridge and a custome fitted out pantry.

IdentifyasTired · 18/10/2018 21:31

Double sink
Range cooker
Walk in pantry cupboard

Wouldn't be without any of these now.

Sidalee7 · 18/10/2018 21:36

Dishwasher
Pull out bins - makes recycling easy
Integrated everything

AlexaC · 18/10/2018 21:42

Dishwasher. I love the dishwasher
As much worktop space as you can get
More plug sockets than you think you need

I did my kitchen in March, it still makes me happy

TheBitterBoy · 18/10/2018 21:43

Our light is on a sensor - seriously you need to do this. No more trying to turn the light on with your elbow when you have hands full of dirty plates, or bags of shopping.
