Finally planning our first kitchen and looking for ideas from people who’ve done it before - What’s the best thing you put in or chose in your kitchen? (Or indeed, the worst)

An insinkerator! Grinds all food waste down the sink plughole and out with the water. No food in the bin ever = no stink!

haggisaggis · 19/10/2018 16:59

Pull out cupboards on the island to take oil / chopping boards / spices / sauces etc.
I can basically stand in one place and with very little moving about reach everything I need to prep and cook with. (Pan drawers also on island under hob. )
Prep sink on island
Warming drawer
Boiling water tap

tiredgirly · 19/10/2018 17:14

Can't believe people saying 'dishwasher' as though it's some kind of extra.I am 50 and never lived in a house without one. I never realised that in this day and age anyone wouldn't have one

Yeahmum · 19/10/2018 17:14

Sink right height for a tall person as ours makes my back ache.

Mountainsided · 19/10/2018 17:36

Dishwasher @tiredgirly nope, just you!

I need to know what a breakfast cupboard is??

Magair · 19/10/2018 17:39

Pull out bin cupboard
Vaulted ceiling
Two single ovens

Cuddlykitten123 · 19/10/2018 17:42

Underfloor heating... totally worth the extra few hundred quid! And I put in tiled upstands instead of skirting boards, South easier to keep clean.

I wish I had more counter space though.

DopeyDazy · 19/10/2018 17:49

had wall cupboards right up to ceiling. Have to use steps for top shelves but no grease and dirt on top and properly useable space.

Lindtnotlint · 19/10/2018 17:52

Induction hob
Bin cupboard
Big larder cupboard with drawers in

And one nobody has mentioned yet

I LOVE my Neolith worktop. Literally indestructible and much more attractive than quartz IMHO.

Zintox · 19/10/2018 18:15

Larder cupboard
Pan drawers
Corner carousel shelves
Massive fridge freezer
Peninsula/island
Five-burner hob
Bin cupboard
Dishwasher

boshette · 19/10/2018 18:16

Massive marble island, Perrin & Rowe taps with squirty direction tap, v sturdy and indestructible double Blanco sinks and BEST OF ALL - my insinkerator!! V v little kitchen waste as it all gets ⚡️ ed and crunched within seconds including chicken carcasses and most food waste - £300 of brilliance!
When we move I will install all these things in a new kitchen without hesitation (if we have the ££!)

boshette · 19/10/2018 18:20

Underfloor heating a must as well

Cococachara · 19/10/2018 18:30

We just finished designing our kitchen recently and work is starting soon, we’re gettig the dishwasher yanked out and not replaced Grin
But we’ve gone for some big pantry style cupboards and some pull out ones too for maximum space!

NotMeNoNo · 19/10/2018 18:55

Good ergonomic layout with a big work area
Shelved out larder
Pullout baskets and inner drawers in base units

TheGlitterFairy · 19/10/2018 19:11

Oooooh! Pull out larder; island with sink; range with 2 ovens - love it!! Dishwasher; no over head cupboards; microwave in a cupboard (or appliance garage!); if you’ve a utility room - stick your washing machine in there!
Last but definitely not least - a wine fridge!!!

Lambzig · 19/10/2018 19:21

Walk in larder room, boiling water tap, appliance garage, no high cupboards.

tentative3 · 19/10/2018 19:53

USB plugs
Eye level oven
Pan drawers. Everywhere.
No wall cupboards (obviously depends on your kitchen size)

No to:

Pull out larder cupboards - had these in two houses and hated them in both. Metal went rusty, difficult to clean the bottom of the cupboard, hate hate hate. I did see an option in DIY kitchens' showroom which had plastic drawers rather than metal, that might be an option.
Dishdrawers - someone said they were thinking about them. Don't. They're shit.
Corner cupboards if you can avoid it. We were looking at a new kitchen recently in a house that we may not be buying any longer and would have looked at having one outward facing cupboard on the peninsula rather than an inward facing corner cupboard, if that makes any sense.

LightastheBreeze · 19/10/2018 21:35

Walk in larder room and separate utility room

cheminotte · 19/10/2018 21:59

Induction hob definitely. Also deep drawers and cupboards.

Triskaidekaphilia · 19/10/2018 22:14

Dishwasher, big fridge, pull out bin and the fact I designed it to be easy peasy to clean Smile

ChilliHobnobs · 19/10/2018 22:17

Plenty of cupboard space - but however much you have it's never enough so I'll just say a corkscrew.

LuluJakey1 · 19/10/2018 22:27

This is a breakfast cupboard for the person who asked. This one is big, you can get them smaller but they contain your coffee maker, kettle, toaster cereals, bread and crockery etc for breakfast. All just shuts away. They can be as fancy or as simple as you like.

To ask what one thing you’ve done to a new kitchen that you can’t live without
lottiegarbanzo · 19/10/2018 22:36

Oh, I see!

LaurieMarlow · 19/10/2018 22:42

Two dishwashers Wink

I also love the pull out larder drawers

Minster2012 · 19/10/2018 22:48

Love this!
Agree with:
-Induction hob (wipes clean so easy looks good & is extra work space when not used)

  • bin cupboard
  • pan drawers
  • larder but I have a big wooden pull out one with 3 weighted pull out shelves
  • higher height ovens & warming drawer
  • double sink
  • boiling hot& cold tap ours is an insinkerator one & bright orange & best thing ever!

Add in:

  • plan what’s going where, my island is for my prep so drawers under are veg, knives, prep stuff etc
  • under hob are cooking stuff then pans
  • love my plate rack over my sink (on wall I don’t have window that side) which shows off emma Bridgewater plates
  • 1 tiny normal cupboard for breakfast stuff & under it is toaster, breadbin next to tap & a smaller cutlery drawer so everything you need for breakfast is right there (lazy til Brew)
-the fancy wine rack we designed for under our larder (attached!)
