To ask what one thing you’ve done to a new kitchen that you can’t live without

Finally planning our first kitchen and looking for ideas from people who’ve done it before - What’s the best thing you put in or chose in your kitchen? (Or indeed, the worst)

Ware disposal unit- halves the ‘dirty bin’ contents and means it’s far more fragrant in the summer!

Island - Epicentre of house/life, and general handbag extension

Second run of drawers - got the standard cutlery/utensils/Tupperware ones, but the second run of 4 if STUFFED with shit, and Was a complete bonus buy. Where the hell id put all that stuff if we hadn’t, I have no idea. Prob on the island... 🤔

I could live without the under unit colour changing neon strip lights, but I was overridden and I have managed to lose/break two of the four remotes in two years, so is a slow but steady progress to de-neoning my kitchen...

Replaced an electric hob with an LPG one. It was LPG because it would have cost each family £4,000 to bring gas to the village. I wanted to be able to have hot food, living in a place that seemed to have power cuts far too frequently. It paid off two weeks after the kitchen was finished; the power cut lasted two days, in January. My ex and I, and three cats, lived in the kitchen. Late on the second day he tripped over a cat, yet again, and was grumpy with me because I was laughing at him. He hadn't noticed the lights were on.

Apart from that, having the builder put dividers for chopping boards and trays in a cupboard. And plenty of drawers. And the lovely custom made butcher's block work trolley made to suit my 5'1" height. And a pullout double larder.

I've moved from that house now, just waiting for the Disabled Facilities Grant to come through so I can do this one! The granite worktops are being reused but the worktop height will be lower.

Larder cupboard- can see all products in one go. Much easier for shopping. Bin in cupboard if you have enough- much more streamlined. Island- sociable and people can sit whilst the cook is cooking.

shop around.are you seeing a consultant to help plan it out.
DONT LET THEM TELL YOU WHAT TO DO.we had to go through so many (stressssss!) to find one that wasnt pushing there sales pitches on us.and often they push certain brands and proudcts and designs becasue they are given more money for them

big fridge.
island if you can
deep draws for your pans under the hob instead of cupboards.(so much easier.
count how many cupbards you have now.do you need the same?can you have a celar out.where will verything you have go?
dishwasher.
over one wall where we have a worktop we have shelves (big block sqaures) which work really well.its above the kettle so we have some glasses plates and bowl there.also on this side we have a little draw for some cutlery essentials to make coffee cereal etc but the main cutlery draw is on the other side under the hob.
more sockets.
more worktop space

Did the same thing. Best decision ever - no laundry in the kitchen, and clean washing near the bedrooms!
