This isn't a trip for his year group but they are organising a language trip to an EU country by air, leaving on, guess what, 29 March!

I think they come back on 3rd April or thereabouts.

I am a bit surprised to say the least. Do they have inside information that there will be a deal? They've also got a EU trip planned later in April but that was organised months before all this latest no-deal furore, and another one in July, but I'd probably expect things to have been sorted out (to an extent) by then, although they might have to get visas for the British passport holders at shortish notice.

Leaving on 29th seems like playing chicken to me; the kids (and teachers!) might not be able to get back.

They are probably part of the exchange. We have to pay up. If we haven't got enough cash, we have to hand over a cheap or free workforce.

Don't worry. They will learn a new language. You might get them back in, say, 25 years.

That's what happens to our poor kids in brexit britain.
Apart from the learning new language stuff.
That's banned. It's 'elitist'.

Well said! I try to ignore the fear-mongering muck-spreading of Tory followers like Teacher22, but when they spread such lies and raise anxiety in people it has to be challenged.

You challenged it with the facts. Well done. My conservative Borough Council, having spent the Emergency Reserve which the previous Labour Council always kept untouched for a major emergency*, are now selling the Town Hall. Imagine if that were the other way round? When we need money, especially if there is a disaster (major train accident for example) there will be nothing to fund it.
*We are in a 'disaster-liable' area, major train links, airport including air freight, major road and several big cities close together. It is considered that where I live could be the first call on the emergency services for any disaster of any of these. Our Council therefore started an emergency fund put to one side for such a need, at the time and in the aftermath. The subsequent Conservative Council spent it. We have nothing to show for on what they spent it. They continue to squeeze the poor and disabled.

My MP, conservative, came to my house because I had been treated badly by a builder. Her local office secretary gave away why - MPs are given a week off to visit their Constituents, he said and what was my disability? [tick] you live alone?[tick] widowed?[tick] treated badly by a rogue builder? [tick] She saw the mess he'd made and then, in less than 5 mins of arriving, saw a piece of furniture out of place because of the building mess in the house and began to scream at me. She berated me for most of my furniture and told me "You do not have paint" because I had bought decorating items! She shouted all the time and said she was sending a charity to take away my furniture! I own my house btw. She is known for having narcissistic rages. She has the same first name as the old-fashioned writer of girls' books; .... Sewell, and her surname begins with the same letter as the writer's surname.

The emergency services are cut back to the bone. I waited in pain alone which prevented me moving from 10 a.m. till 11p.m. for the ambulance. The crews were on life threatening calls all day and had to prioritise. I understood, but it brought home that we do not have enough of them. Whose fault is that? I am SO fed up with this government and as for Mrs May! I wonder, were people to have known she was going to be doing all this Brexit negotiating, would they have voted Conservative? Would they have voted Leave?

It's ghastly.

woman11017 Crumbs! You are right! I was aiming for levity. Can't do that now, poor kids just have that before them anyway. I feel so depressed....

Ta1kinpeace · 19/10/2018 18:43

I have one child benefiting from Erasmus
and one child who probably never will
sorry
but there is no levity on this issue

Brexit isn't very nice is it?

Parker231 · 19/10/2018 22:25

100% disaster. Neither DH or I are British although I’ve been here since I was 5 and DH since he was 21. Our DT’s were born here. We’re now considering leaving the UK permanently.

Jaxhog · 19/10/2018 23:06

Well the school won't be bothered, because they aren't the ones paying for the trip!

People may be stuck at airports for a few days and have to queue for immigration, but I expect things to get sorted pretty quickly. But who knows?

woman11017 · 20/10/2018 07:15

The school is in loco parentis.

It is legally liable for the children.

May and her crew are also liable for the harm and worse they are inflicting with their 'brexit'.

Ellyess · 20/10/2018 11:50

Ta1kinpeace I realise that now, I was just trying to joke about the school trip which I think will be ok.
There is no levity it's a dreadful scenario. As I said, I am very depressed.

I was working on international medical research. The links in Europe are vital. I dead what will happen now. It could literally cost lives, and many may be children.

Boulty · 20/10/2018 12:49

Remember the world will end when the year 2000 arrives panic and all the preparations because computers will shut down, there will be riots and we will all starve?

ManicUnicorn · 20/10/2018 13:13

Boulty oh ffs just reading the thread will you.

Ta1kinpeace · 20/10/2018 13:45

No, because
in 1996-1999 the BUSINESS EXPERTS took control and the Politicians took a back seat
and the hard work was done to make it work.

Sadly in 2016-2018 we have had enough of experts and fuck business

Spot the difference Grin

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-latest-visas-travel-free-movement-eu-commission-france-schengen-a8595991.html?amp

Significant extra cost to holidays if visas are needed.

JagerPlease · 22/10/2018 19:34

Visas won't be needed. Even the draft French law refers to needing a visa to remain for more than 3 months or to work/study (as per general Schengen rules)

Ta1kinpeace · 22/10/2018 19:38

What has Schengen got to do with it?
The UK has never been part of Schengen.
Brits will have the same legal standing as Nigerians in France after Brexit.

biscuitmillionaire · 22/10/2018 19:53

This is from MardyCow's link to government info.

If there is ‘no deal’ with the EU, airlines wishing to operate flights between the UK and the EU would have to seek individual permissions to operate from the respective states (be that the UK or an EU country). In this scenario the UK would envisage granting permission to EU airlines to continue to operate. We would expect EU countries to reciprocate in turn. It would not be in the interest of any EU country or the UK to restrict the choice of destinations that could be served, though, if such permissions are not granted, there could be disruption to some flights.

Please don't believe all the clickbait shite put out by the not-very-Independent.

Parker231 · 22/10/2018 20:08

It isn’t just being reported in The Independent. Same message from the French papers. If no deal it could apply for all Schengen countries.

Ta1kin is correct - British travellers will have no special status in Europe.

JagerPlease · 22/10/2018 20:16

Schengen is relevant because France is in Schengen, and the proposed rules for Brits are the same as for other third country nationals under Schengen - visa for more than 3 months residence or work/study. A better comparison would be Brits will be the same as Americans in a no deal

Ta1kinpeace · 22/10/2018 20:25

Jagrplease
A better comparison would be Brits will be the same as Americans in a no deal
WRONG
The USA has a visa waiver deal with the EU that currently covers the UK.
After Brexit, Yanks will still have visa free access to France (lucky me)
but Brits will not have visa free access ANYWHERE

JagerPlease · 22/10/2018 20:45

Our status for visa free travel isn't dependent on being an EU member. The Schengen area has a common visa policy which dictates which nationalities require a visa for entry. At no stage has the EU ever suggested that UK nationals would require an entry visa as a tourist, and reciprocally the same will apply to EU nationals travelling to the UK in a no deal. The draft French law is consistent with this

frumpety · 22/10/2018 20:57

At no stage has the EU ever suggested that UK nationals would require an entry visa as a tourist

^^ Yet.
But they wanted a deal, if no deal happens and there are only a few weeks before we know one way or another, (so before Christmas)who knows what the mood of the EU will be?

Ta1kinpeace · 22/10/2018 20:59

Jager
You are kidding yourself you think it will be seamless.

I did not become an EU citizen till recently - getting in and out of the EU without an EU passport (which Brits will not have) is NOT straightforward.

JagerPlease · 22/10/2018 21:37

Seamless? Not a chance in hell of that. All that I'm saying is that UK nationals won't need a visa to simply enter the EU. However, the Schengen Borders Code could well apply which would mean intentions and means testing for tourists
